  1. I thought that I had seen something like this before, and it turns out it was at the Museum of Army Flying, Middle Wallop. Although they only have a replica, if you can believe wikipedia, the Hafner Rotabuggy actually flew.
  2. Looks like it might be a "short snorter". These bills were common in WW II and you might start at the web site devoted to them.
  3. 'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.' Lewis Carroll
  4. I think even the Royal Navy would classify the USS Cole as a ship.
  5. Wiretapping was around long before 1940. The French Resistance and the Jedburgh teams caused enough havoc to the telecommunications system to force the Germans to go back to using radio. The good folks at Bletchley Park had a field day once the Germans were forced to use radio again.
  6. Appendix 6 of Niklas Zetterling's book "Normandy 1944" gives a daily cumulative total for US and British tank strength. It also gives tanks types for many of the units, but this information is not complete. The TO&E for the unit type is given but not necessarily the exact model of the tank.
  7. On a UK keyboard the position of the tilde is not the same as on a US keyboard. On my (UK Extended) keyboard the "`" key returns the AI plans.
  8. The Mythical Man Month By Frederick P Brooks was always one of my favorites. It deals with the development of the operating system for the IBM 360 and is at least 40 years old. I believe you can download copies of it now, but I don't know if that is legal.
  9. Torch didn't occur until November 42, which was still a lot earlier then a lot of the upper echelon of the Army was comfortable with. Rick Atkinson's excellent book "An Army at Dawn" paints a pretty grim picture of the readiness of the U.S. Army to tackle the Wehrmacht.
  10. Mr. Lector has some great recipes.
  11. I really liked The Bridges at Toko-Ri and it made a good movie too. Being from Virginia, I didn't care for Chesapeake.
  12. Thanks It turns out that the tilde key '~' in not in the same place on UK and US keyboards. On a UK keyboard its '`' that provides the info.
  13. The following was clipped from the notes for the Offensive Script (AI): I have tried pressing the tilde key and nothing seems to be reported. Is the information stored in a log file or displayed directly to the screen? (Version 1.02 installed)
  14. When the numbers go red it means you have reached the maximum level set for that category in the Research menu (2 for Infantry, for example). You can still pour money at the category but it will never increase. You can reclaim the money from the category (at 50% of the cost you incurred).
  15. Eagle Against the Sun is good, but you need to back it up with an atlas as it has no maps. I use the West Point Atlas For the Second World War Asia and the Pacific. Both books are usually pretty inexpensive in used book stores.
  16. Look in the main game folder and you will find a file named: localization.txt I open the file with Notepad (the simple word processor that came with XP) and you can find a a section like this: ; Country IDs #SEA= Sea #UK= UK #FRANCE= France #USA= USA ... Just change the names to anything you like and save the file. Remember that it has to be a text file (extension is .txt).
  17. Thank you for the clarification. I had completely missed the point that destroyers are exempted when the subs are in silent mode. That would completely explain the behaviour I have experienced in PDE 1.01. Rule # 1 - Read the manual.
  18. If you are playing against the AI, I believe you (LarryP) are correct. Their is no hunting involved. The Allied forces head straight for the sub no matter what the mode.
  19. Why create Vichy France? Its a good question, as even against the AI I can find no reason at all to accept the option to not create it. The promise in the text that the Italians can finish the job in Africa is overly optimistic, and it will take significant German forces in Africa to finish the job.
  20. Since the minimum turn length is 7 days and in that turn the sub can only cover 352 nautical miles, that gives an average speed of 2 knots. Given your speed figures it appears that the sub should have a greater range. I guess that the compression of the ocean areas makes it difficult to adjust the speeds.
  21. If you are still compiling things for the first patch. In the following script (Storm of Steel) #NAME= Treaty of Moscow and the Soviet-Finnish Winter War the map positions listed already start the scenario as tiles controlled by the USSR #MAP_POSITION= 133,3 #MAP_POSITION= 135,9 #MAP_POSITION= 134,11
  22. Thank you, that should do the trick. In both the US and Canadian scripts (1939 Storm of Steel)the trigger is 0 and the remark for the Condition_Position says it is always true (copy of the CA script below) #NAME= Canadian Industry Mobilizes For Total War #POPUP= Canadian Industry Mobilizes For Total War #IMAGE= #SOUND= troops2.wav, industry.wav #FLAG= 1 #TYPE= 1 #AI= 0 #LEVEL= 0 #COUNTRY_ID= 14 #TRIGGER= 0 #GV= 1[1,100] #LINK= 0[0] ; Failsafe Activation Date on Surrender of Japan #DATE= 1945/08/10 #RESOURCE= 10,22 #RESOURCE= 27,24 ; Dummy Condition Position, always satisfied #CONDITION_POSITION= 0,0 [0,0] [0,0] [0] [0]
  23. Thanks! My intent was to have the resource become available on a specific date. The trigger in the stock script is zero, so I thought that it was intended. If the trigger is non-zero won't it possibly activate at some random time before the failsafe date?
  24. I was attempting to add resources to a country useing the technique of the existing script. In every case it passed the failsafe date and did not execute. I made a simple test by altering the existing script as shown below. In every test the script will not execute at the specified date. Am I missing some essential condition? { #NAME= USA Victory in the Pacific #POPUP= Japan Surrenders, US Industry Mobilizes For Total War In Europe #IMAGE= american_industry.bmp #SOUND= industry.wav #FLAG= 1 #TYPE= 1 #AI= 0 #LEVEL= 0 #COUNTRY_ID= 3 #TRIGGER= 0 #GV= 1[1,100] #LINK= 0[0] ; Failsafe Activation Date on Surrender of Japan #DATE= 1939/05/01 #RESOURCE= 1,26 ; Dummy condition, always satisfied #CONDITION_POSITION= 0,0 [0,0] [0,0] [0] [0] }
