1. Nice post Henri. Where do you people find the time to write these things? By the way, why is Allied infantry superior to German? ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
2.
quote:
Obviously it's a bit superfluous if you have armour, but they're a nasty surprise in Mechanised attacks.

See, my reasoning behind it is that they would have a faster rate of fire than your average tank. Of course, I haven't tried this out yet so I'm not sure if this is true or not. Yet again I'm going by what I learned in CC2 which doesn't exactly strive for total realism. I would think though that they would be harder to hit since the silouette is smaller, and with a faster rate of fire it would be a better risk than pulling out your tanks in a situation where you need to clear a certain area of enemy armor. Has anybody done any Rate Of Fire tests in this game? How do guns compare to tanks? ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
3.
quote:
If I play the germans i'll always buy a 20mm. If the lay of the land is such that I dont have a good field of fire I will use tow it to a spot which can fire perpendicular to the advancing axis (but well forward) but is still covered from the front. Forests and the sides of hills work well. The points are low enough for a 20mm (and 75mm) where if you dont have a good LOS your not out very much , but if you do have LOS you get quite a payback.

Exactly what I was thinking. I've noticed that the flags are always pretty much lined up with each other which means the enemy will almost always in a meeting scenario, stand in back in a line to guard positions or to soften up positions for advancing infantry. Thus, on a medium or large map, if you could secretly move up a gun perpendicular with his support teams, you could have one or two side shots on his tanks. It seems hard to do but if done correctly, meaning moving the gun in unspotted into a perpendicular position with the opposing units, one could wreak havoc on his opponent's formation. Everything would be thrown into chaos. Of course, I would think you'd need a big map and a lot of tree cover to pull it off. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
4. Has anyone ever used guns in meeting or attack scenarios by moving them up with trucks and placing them in strategic positions without being spotted? Also, what strategies do you use to protect them from arty or other weapons that have big HE rounds? Obviously, if you move up a gun, and it is seen, you've lost the advantage of surprise. So I would think this is key to using one on the attack, just as it's equally important for it to be hidden on defense. The first thing that comes to mind here would be to use smoke to disguise your doings but then that would alert the enemy that you're up to something... ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
5. I'm not big on Ubertank battles either. Have you tried playing with heavy trees? The Ubertank's strength is taken away when it's LOS is cut short. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
6. Wes, I wasn't in a bad mood, I was in a drunk mood. Hell, I still am. I don't give a flying f*ck if women served in the Russian army. I don't want them in my damn computer games. Takes all the fun out of it.
7. F*CK THE WOMEN! Women are only good for one thing....and you know what that is Scott. I sure as hell don't wanna see no damn women on the battlefield. If I do, I won't play this game. How's that for PC? ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
8. My opponent Casman has disappeared and his E-mail addy now returns as one that doesn't exist. Does anyone know what happened to the guy? We were right in the middle of a game when he vanished. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
9. Just make sure you button up when going in close because if you lose the commander to the Wasp, you lose the ability to fire its gun. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
10. The guy who runs Tournament House, Yobobo, is a huge fan of the game. He's always adding new stuff to the site and loves to hear from the players about how to make the site better. Whether you're playing PBEM's or TCP, you're bound to find an opponent there. Aside from the chat room, what I like most is that they have a list of players that tells: 1)Whether they're presently looking for new games or are booked up 2)What kind of games they're looking for. Makes things so much easier to match up with someone who is looking for a similar battle. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
11. I hope you're right Joe. Steve, I see what you're saying. Once again, I will have to assimilate myself when it comes to switching between CC and CM. Being a fan of CC2 though, you have to admit that the hetzerflammen can be very therapeudic when torching the enemy. Is there a better release than showering your enemy with flames and watching them writhe in pain? Oh well, I guess I won't find that here... ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
12. What is this "Hi Mom!" stuff? You gonna let us in on the joke? ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
13. After some time using both the Wasp and the Badger, I've come to the conclusion that they don't do anything but scare the **** outta the enemy. From my experience, these tanks spray a round over a squad and nothing happens. The second or third round into the area, be it a house or foilage, may result in the area catching fire with the men caught in the middle. Again, nothing happens. I still see 3 men in the squad. Sure, they may have lost 1 or 2 guys but when I'm 60m away shooting a gigantic flame at somebody, I would venture to say that in real life, at least half of that squad would be on fire and subsequently die. Why doesn't this happen here? In my present game, I fired 5-6 shots from about 40m away at an enemy squad hiding in the woods. After the last shot, they ran away with the 3 members still showing, meaning they couldn't have lost more than 2-3 guys in the squad. Now I'll prepare for somebody to tell me about all the abstractions in the game. God I miss my Hetzerflammen from CC2. I want to see men burn dammit! At least let me here some screams... ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
14.
quote:
Deadmarsh, Forgive my ignorance, but what is SWOTL?

Secret Weapons of The Luftwaffe. It's a WWII air combat game that was done by Lucas Arts which came out in the early 90's. You could fly missions in Allied or German fighter planes or fly a bomber mission for the Allies. In fact, I believe it was the first game of it's kind to offer the player the chance to take control over any of the gunner positions in one of those crates. Man, was that fun. Hard as hell to hit those Germans but fun nonetheless to switch around like that as you hoped to get back to base without getting ripped apart by a 190. Another great thing about that game was that you could fly the 262's which were the only mass produced jet engine planes in the war. And if that wasn't enough, you could also take control of the Komet, a plane which was about as unstable as any could be because it ran off cheap rocket fuel that would cause the plane to explode at any given time. There were reports of Komets sitting on runways, only to go up in flames without any reason. Super fast in the air though but only a short amount of fuel. Just enough to get above the enemy and come swooping down on them for 1 or 2 passes. Unfortunately, Lucas Arts can't break themselves away from doing more Star Wars games and word is there will be no sequel to SWOTL even though there is a fan base that remembers it and would love to see another one. And so, I lament... ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
15. Old Crow, I thought I was the only one who was gonna put Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe on this list. Man, what a game! Recently I was so nostalgic for it that I finally took everyone's advice and bought what is probably the last copy of EAW on the market. And I still haven't played it more than a few times. Why? See the reasons below which also happen to be my other two choices for best wargames of the 90's: 1)SWOTL 2)Close Combat 2--Aside from the screwed up AI, the 2nd one was by far the best, especially if you're just as interested in infantry battles as you are in the tanks duking it out. Real time play at it's best 3)Combat Mission--Never thought I'd get stuck on this as much as I have. Learned to appreciate turn-based games in their own light for what strengths they bring to the wargame genre and now I like it as much as my beloved CC2. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
16. I take it the snipers in CM aren't like the Uber Snipers in CC2 where you rush them into an Allied building and take out an entire 50 cal team within seconds... I'm really wondering if they're worth the money since their ammo is severly limited also. It seems they are only good for shooting tank commanders and nothing else. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
17. That Pac-Man game that just came out looks pretty good. Might want to check out Asteroids too. Lots of fun. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
18. LOL. You just showed your age...as did I unfortunately. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
19.
quote:
Abandoned the mac.......just bought a PC. How do I take screenshot?...

Ancient chinese secret... ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young. [This message has been edited by Colonel_Deadmarsh (edited 01-03-2001).]
20.
quote:
Why would I use it. I never have and never will use the spell checker.

That button isn't there for decoration Rob. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young. [This message has been edited by Colonel_Deadmarsh (edited 01-02-2001).]
21. How would your crack units know that a bunch of greens were attacking them? I'm not so sure this is modeled in CM. Just the fact that a bunch of guys rushing the buildings they're in might be enough to get them to leave. P.S.--Rob, I see you're making good use of that spell check feature. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
22. BUMP. Lemme add on to this and say that I just started a PBEM right now and opted for large hills. I did this because modest hills provides a few elevation changes but I wanted something a little more. What me and my opponent got was a bunch of canyons and overlooks from everywhere on the map. It's basically overkill. Please BTS, add a few more options to both hills and trees so we have more control over the terrain. It would really add to what's already a great game. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
23. I wonder if it's possible for companies like Combatsim to make it a necessity to click on the banner ads to access the forums. Maybe this way, everyone would win. Sure the user would have to go through an extra step to get to the content but this would make it possible for the advertisers to pay for ads and know for certain they are being clicked on. I'm sure the advertisers would be much more willing to pay if this scenario were to be introduced. You can't make the consumer buy the product but you can make him pay closer attention to what is being said about the product. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
24. I've noticed that everyone seems to use the "Medium" and "Moderate" choices about 99% of the time for trees and hills when playing games. This is for good reason since anything else usually doesn't provide the needed tree cover or the needed elevation difference in making a battlefield that provides a wealth of places to hide and sneak around on. I'd like to suggest for a future patch and in CM2 that more options be given to the Quick Battle makers. I think 2-3 more options would be good for both the Tree and Hill category. If BTS could throw in 2 more degrees of "medium" and "moderate" it would really make the QB's that much more fun to play. P.S.--Yes, I know you can be extremely specific to both hills and trees by making your own map...but as great as that editor is, I don't find myself with enough time to make my own maps due to its complexity. This is why as far as the QB's go, having more options in each category would be a good thing for the rest of us. ------------------ Youth is wasted on the young.
