  1. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Could someone be so nice to explain to me what "trolling" means?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I consulted my Dungeons and Dragons Player Manual but couldn't find the answer. Hmm...maybe it's in the Dungeon Master's Guide. I'll get back to you. ------------------ Everything in moderation...except CM.
  2. Those banner ads don't pay squat. We're talking a couple of pennies a hit. I can tell you right now you won't make anything on a site dedicated to CM. If you wanna do it for fun, that's one thing but you need tons of unique hits on those banner ads to make money and that is damn hard to do when the only people visiting your site are a small group of wargamers. ------------------ Everything in moderation...except CM.
  3. Just a few thoughts after receiving CM in the mail a few days ago... 1) The tanks in this game are awesome! Using tanks in Close Combat 2 drives me nuts. Sometimes I want to put my fist through the screen. These tanks go where you tell them to go and do what you tell them to do without any weird-ass AI interfering. 2) The camera in CM really adds to the game. I love being able to zoom all over the place and view things from different angles. And hey, if I feel like playing in CC format, I just hit the #5 button and I got my bird's eye view. 3) Great manual! Very indepth. I feel like I can look something up and actually find it in there unlike those pamphlets that come with other war games. Bonus points for having it be in printed form and not making me read the entire thing in online help. I hate reading books on computer screens. I've also gotten used to the turn-based/real-time hybrid play. When you think of it, this was the only way to do the game as the scale of it wouldn't be possible in 100% real time. Kudos to the designers for making the right choice when in this age of real time games, it seemingly was the wrong one. I feel as though this will be one of my favorite games soon. ------------------ Everything in moderation...except CM.
  4. All people wishing to play in ladder games and future tournaments should go to Tournament House http://www.tournamenthouse.com TH is starting to pack them in and when I finally get out of boot camp and feel my skills are good enough, I hope to see you all over there for a game! ------------------ Everything in moderation...except CM.
  5. <quote>That's just it, what would you expect? I've seen some pretty inept AI's out there worse than CM, that's for sure. How 'bout Close Combat. Yeah, now that's a tight AI! Nothing like running a new scenario each time just to find those same ol'Panthers holing themselves up in the middle of town, AGAIN, moving back and forth as if they were rocking themselves asleep, AGAIN.</quote> LOL! That is so true! And when they're not rocking themselves to sleep, they're dancing to the beat in their own heads.
  6. Just told Rob about that little problem. The links do work though, although I use Eudora for my mail...if that matters.
  7. Make that 11 now. I'm telling you people, this is the place to be...
  8. Ok, apparently this UBB thing is different. So lemme give this another try: Tournament House -- http://www.tournamenthouse.com
  9. Thanks Swamp. Is there a trick to putting URL's in these posts? I'm doing the same thing I'd do in an email but it didn't work. It's just the addy with the less-than greater-than signs around it to make it a link, right? Colonel_Deadmarsh
  10. Captain Toleran, There is a CM ladder over at Tournament House <http://www.tournamenthouse.com> that is going to be the #1 ladder for this game. It has just opened so there are only a few members signed up as of now but we expect more to sign up soon. Go over there and look for yourself. I think you'll be pleased with what TH offers. 11. Just wanted to let you know that there is now a ladder system in place for CM at <http://www.tournamenthouse.com> Now...looking around, I have seen another ladder for this game but I'm not sure how many people use it or how good it is. I just wanted to let you know that if you are looking for a ladder to play on, Tournament House has just opened its doors to CM. The owner of the site, Yobobo, has spent a lot of time putting this together and really wants to make it a home for CM players. We already host ladder play for the CC players and want to continue the war game tradition at Tournament House by signing up as many CM players as we can. So, drop by and look at the site and tell us what you think. And...if you like what you see, sign on. See ya on the battlefield. Colonel
  12. 1) Who is in charge of closing threads and what are the reasons for them being closed? 2) What is the difference between a junior member and a member? I've searched the FAQ for answers but didn't come up with any? Can someone give me some help here...
  13. Okay, I just purchased the game. I liked the tank fighting too much to pass it up. Time will tell if I can get used to the infantry combat. Hopefully, this game will prolong my lifespan. That Close Combat 2 AI was giving me high blood pressure. It'll be good to spend some time away from it.
  14. ---------------------------------------- People with suggestions on how to improve CM are fine, and as Steve and Charles have pointed out, many player-made suggestions have made it into the game. But why must people continue to insist that they're right, and everyone else is wrong, and without their pet feature, CM is inevitably crippled? Col. Deadmarsh - Apologies if I come off harsh, it's not my intention. But understand that when we say "this has been discussed to death, do a search," that's not really an invitation to try to convince us otherwise. It's just going to lead to frustration on both sides. Without meaning to sound superior, you really can't judge the issues involved based solely on the demo. As IntelWeenie suggested, do a search on "dead bodies." You're likely to find that a lot more helpful than trying to proselytize us. ---------------------------------------- I don't think I was trying to convince anyone of anything. I was merely stating my opinion. Apparently, that's too much for some people to handle. And I'm not necessarily talking about you. As for doing a search, I already did one before I posted and saw that a lot of people agreed with me. And just because it's been posted before doesn't mean it can't be posted again. Besides, what I was reading took place last year. If you don't wanna read about the "dead body" problem, then don't read this thread. It's as simple as that. Just don't go acting superior because you've been here longer than me. Make your point and move on. Some people though have convinced me to take another look and maybe if I had the soldier screen up while fighting so I could see my men disappearing, it would help. I'm sure the full version is a lot better than the demo too and there will be other things I haven't seen yet on the demo that will be on the full game that might make up for what it lacks in asthetics.
  15. quote: ----------------------------------------- Take a company of troops, have them advance into combat, take incoming fire and losses, and then tell me how you are going to know how many men are still alive in squad F-3 just by looking at the number of bodies on the ground. You can't, so you still have to click on F-3 to find out, therefore the dead bodies serve no useful function. ---------------------------------------- The point I'm trying to get across here is that when I'm in an infantry fight and one or more of my men dies, I don't get the sensation of this happening even with the audio clues. In Close Combat, you actually see your men die or see them get hurt as the color on the screen goes from green to yellow. This gives the player the sensation that he really is losing men in his squad during the fight. In Combat Mission, you hear a couple of moans or whatever and then when it's all over, you click on the screen and find out that you lost 6 men in that battle. Well, that seperates me from the realism. It becomes like a dice-rolling game. You find out the exact outcome, yes, but there is no sensation of actually being in the battle. All you see is men shooting back and forth until all of a sudden, the whole team disappears leaving one dead body remaining. This bothers me a lot. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think a lot of people would agree with me on this and will just go back to playing Close Combat to satisfy their needs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- quote: ------------------------------------- Needs? ------------------------------------- Yes, needs. The need to feel as though I'm losing my men one by one as my squad does battle with the enemy. I wish this didn't bother me so much but it does. I thought the turn-based/real-time hybrid play would annoy me the most but that I got over. This though is enough to make me think twice about buying the game. I seriously don't know if I could get used to it. At the very least, I would buy CM and still spend 50% of my time playing Close Combat 2 to get the advantages of it's infantry fighting. One question for everyone who has the full version: Can that unit screen be displayed in playback mode so you can monitor when a soldier gets killed in real time or can the screen only be pulled up after the fighting is over?
  16. I've played the demo and liked it a lot but I have one thing to say about CM. I'm not happy about the fact that dead bodies aren't shown on the screen. Now, I know this isn't possible with today's technology but can't something be put in place of the fallen soldier to let the player know someone has died. When one of my men gets shot, I have to pull up the screen to find out how many got killed from a grenade hit or whatever. I really think this take away from the realism. Surely, a helmut or grave marker, or something can be put in it's place to give a better realism effect. Without this, infantry fighting really suffers. I think a lot of people would agree with me on this and will just go back to playing Close Combat to satisfy their needs. What about an option feature for the players to keep everyone happy? And if there isn't time to make one, can a 3rd party mod be made for this by someone else?
