1. That is a fun thread. It is a community unto itself. If you have not noticed, an enjoyable and popular community for the folks that use it. If you do not care to use it or find it distasteful then I would suggest you no longer read it
 2. Many of us from the forum are playing through here http://www.tournamenthouse.com/ I am sure you could find a game.
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by Jadayne: I got the game 3 months ago. I have now been at the computer non-stop since that moment. I have an IV bag in my left arm feeding me a glucose paste for nutrition and have had my entire lower digestive system removed so i don't ever need to leave for the bathroom (all done under local anesthetic so I could continue playing) My roommate comes in and flips me over twice a day, so I don't get bedsores on my butt, and sponges me down. The carpal tunnel syndrome at this point is so bad that I've resorted to banging on the keyboard with my forehead and using my toes to manipulate the mouse. I've gone clinically blind, but have become so assimilated with the game, that I can maneuver my way around the map by sense of smell. I have no friends left except a bunch of people on the forum that i've never even met. God, I can't wait for CM2

HA HA HA!
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Dr. Brian: Sadly, the game engine for CM does not use AI or more appropriately, an "expert system." I surmise, from what you tell me, and what I've seen, that it uses a series of code that acts and reacts to certain actions. To get some logic going, it needs to use soemthing like Bayesian Networks (based on Bayes Theory) or actual Fuzzy Logic (developed by Zahdai <sp>). Just my 0.02

Jeez Doc, write one durn paper on "Expert Systems" and off you go wanting it used on everything! [This message has been edited by Abbott (edited 09-14-2000).]

 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Spook: Perhaps gone from the computer, Abbot, but never gone from the tabletop. I have to agree with XPav's principle that it's a waste to attempt a flame war with Has-borg over this. Let Hasbro throw it out on the market, let the chips fall as they will. But when new computer wargamers are asking for information on what's the difference between computer SL, the SL boardgame, CM, etc., then be prepared to answer.

I apologize if my posts may be taken as rude or as starting a flame. That was not my intention
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by XPav: Its a name. That's it. It goes on the box. Its a good name, too. Nice, short, and easy to say. I don't think that Hasbro is trying to sucker people into buying it, because, quite frankly, how many people know what Squad Leader is/was in the first place?

That is not my point. My point is there can never be a Squad Leader now that this one will be published. The name is gone. It has nothing to do with suckering anyone into buying it.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by XPav: I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with you. Over on the newsgroup comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical, the general consensus towards Squad Leader, was indeed, one of disgust and outrage. The producer, however, showed up, answered our questions, and addressed our concerns. Now, he's a wargamer, apparently! He's even played ASL. He acknowledges that this ain't going to be the most realistic hardcore wargame ever. Its not supposed to be. However, they are trying to make a good, solid, WW2 tactical game that is fun to play. You know what? All this bitching about "its not squad leader".... who the hell cares? Its a name. Nothing more. If the games good, well, then, great. If its not, well, then, its not. Anti-Hasbro Jihads against Hasbro (for SL, Falcon, M1TP3, B17 whatever) don't serve any purpose. Writing hate filled emailed to the support mailboxes at Hasbro and Microprose doesn't help either. And its not worth your time, or my time. We could be playing Combat Mission.

I understand your argument The issue dearest to me is I played Squad Leader for 20 years always wishing for computer Squad Leader. That will NEVER ever be, now that Hasbro has the license and is publishing "Not Squad Leader". Making a good wargame is fine. But when it is called Squad Leader, make it Squad Leader.
 9. A new version of GLSetup has been released today. The latest version (build 116) of the hardware setup and driver installation program adds support for 3dfx Voodoo 5, and ATI Rage 128 Pro & Radeon graphics cards. The latest version also adds updated driver support for 3dfx Voodoo 3, 3dlabs Permedia 3 (Windows 98), ATI Rage 128 and MAXX, Intel i810, Matrox G200 and G400, NVIDIA TNT and GeForce series, and S3 Savage 4 and Savage 2000. Finally, the latest build fixes a bug relating to NVIDIA driver installs and the Intel i810 control panel installation and gfxdiag.exe launch bug. For more information about GLSetup, check out www.glsetup.com.

 11. The gamey part seems to come in if one player decides to use a lemming tactic (being used against the friend of mine by someone other than me). With little planning, the lemming leader simply orders all his units to march together decimating and overrunning anything in their path without regard to any real tactics. This appears to be effective, though a bit unrealistic and gamey to us. Personally I believe that even if it wins the scenario, the points would probably be lower than a more realistic, cautious approach. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Infantry charges have always proven to be disasters to the charging player in my experience. I devastated an entire company of British veterans with a dug in German platoon of regular submachine gunners in two turns. I also was able to destroy two platoons of American riflemen in one turn with a German rifle platoon. Both of these instances worked to my favor with my deployment but that is how it should be. Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you [This message has been edited by Abbott (edited 09-14-2000).]
 12. Here is a small FREEWARE program I have been using daily since version 1 (about a year). It works in Windows and frees up available RAM . When CM starts to slow down I (Esc) to desktop, click my short cut to “Rambooster” that is on my taskbar. There is a definite performance increase upon returning to CM. http://www.saunalahti.fi/~borg/rambooster/ (My system Specs. PIII 600, 192 megs. ram, Viper V770 32 megs. Windows98 2nd. Edition)

 15. You have my vote as well for some type of record keeping or campaign. I have lost interest in playing against the AI because of the lack of continuity.
 16. I believe AT teams should receive pistols or rifles in a patch or at least by CM2.
 17. I purchased Diablo II myself. By the time I had it in my hands it’s cost was $73.00. Three days later I sold it to a friend for $40.00. Diablo was great as a new product. Diablo II was more of the exact same thing and did not hold my interest. [This message has been edited by Abbott (edited 09-14-2000).]
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Jarmo:

The T-8 is an Infantry support weapons system not a assault gun was my meaning. To use them as Cavelry is a bit unusual.
 19. From what I have read it will only resemble AH's squad leader in name only. CM is Squad Leader (only better) actually. I believe BTS started out to make Squad Leader then went their own direction if I recall correctly. [This message has been edited by Abbott (edited 09-14-2000).]
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by Scorpion: I'm more adamant about the T-8 than I am the Jeep - the Jeep seems to die easy. The T-8, however, is somewhat more durable. I had an opponent take 10+ T-8's, load them up with infantry, and run them at me...I resisted the assault, but I can see this being very nasty under the right circumstances. -Scorp

Sounds a bit gamey to me.
 21. I also have only been playing PBEM. I have seven active games going and two "Where 'R' they". Seven seems to keep me in turns pretty well.
 22. The .50cal team is 6 men (more staying power). The Jeep is a 2 man crew.
 23. Nope, not next day. I received mine in 5 days. I live in Kansas. I actually felt $53.00 was well worth the value. It is incredibly well done.
