1. Are you detecting a pattern here? ------------------ "It's a boy!" - My wife's OB/GYN Nov. 8th, 4:45am [This message has been edited by IntelWeenie (edited 01-05-2001).]

 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Pvt.Tom: The armor is weak but it seems much better than the Hetzer against infantry.

That's because they were designed to do different things. The StuG is really a mobile infantry support gun and the Hetzer is a Tank Destroyer. Still, they aren't so overspecialized that they can't perform the other's job. I find myself using the Hetzer more than the StuG since I'd rather buy a PzKfw IV than a StuG for a few points more if I can. Same gun, pretty much the same armor but it's turreted and has another MG. I find the Hetzer's biggest drawback to be its low ammo loadout since they usually survive pretty long when when sited properly. ------------------ "It's a boy!" - My wife's OB/GYN Nov. 8th, 4:45am

 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Wesy: If you have built your own box, could you comment on the stability of your box? Im considering the following...

I have always built my own PCs and have almost never had any stability problems. Just be certain to do your research thouroughly and things will be OK. I have heard that the T-birds do generate quite a bit of heat, so make sure you get a good cooling system and case with good airflow. In addition to anandtech, I would recommend checking out toms hardware and sharky extreme. ------------------ "It's a boy!" - My wife's OB/GYN Nov. 8th, 4:45am
 9. In my experience, ambush markers are better viewed as "tripwires" rather than a boresighted or preranged target location. When an enemy unit trips the ambush, expect normal TacAI targeting rules to apply. If used carefully, this behavior can be used to great effect to trap several enemies in a kill zone instead of plinking the first tank that happens along (and alerting the rest of your enemy's units to the danger). It's likely the ATG crew figured the close suppport Crommwell was more of a threat to it than the "light armor". AFAIK, proximity of VLs plays no part in the TacAI targeting (nor do I think it should). ------------------ "It's a boy!" - My wife's OB/GYN Nov. 8th, 4:45am
 10. Oh sure, wait until I start working a second job (while my wife's on maternity leave) and don't have any time to play.... I guess I'll just have to give up sleep on the weekends, too! ------------------ "It's a boy!" - My wife's OB/GYN Nov. 8th, 4:45am
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by patboivin: I found this on the 'net: It's taking people a long time to figure out what happened... if something did happen. There are a lot of grognards on this board, what do you think of this story? Does it sound plausible?

About half my Company (myself included) refused (quietly ) to take the PB tablets when the Division NBC officer would not tell us exactly how they were supposed to work. We heard lots of scary speculation, but nothing authoritative. Crawling around in tanks KO'ed by DU penetrators, heavy oil smoke, swarms of flies carrying God knows what diseases, etc., etc., did not help one's health, either. I'm fine, though, no matter what my wife says! ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Compassion: Also, this is the Pentium 60 and 66 of the P-4 line. This is not the final form of the part and we won't see that until next year. Not making excuses for Intel, just the way it is.

Yes, I will be waiting until Intel ramps the speed up a bit. I read several reviews and one (don't remember which one) mentioned that the P4 will be scalable to around the 10Ghz mark. The P3 is already pretty much topped out at 1Ghz (the 1.13Ghz chip flopped pretty badly). The bad news for DIYers is that to upgrade to a P4 you need a new motherboard, processor, memory (RDRAM in pairs no less!) and power supply! The new PS is needed because of an additional 12V connector to the M/B. The really bad news is that the 1.4/1.5 P4 socket configuration will likely be dropped when they move to the .13 micron process! So if you get a P4 system now, you can't even upgrade it later on! Argh! ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.

 14.
quote:
Originally posted by Olle Petersson: I think the 17pdr-on-Churchill was called Centurion. Cheers Olle

IIRC, there was a redesign of the Churchill done near the end of the war mounting the 17-pdr called "Black Prince". It looked like a lower, wider Chuchill with a larger turret. Didn't the Centurion have a 32-pdr? (maybe only in later marks?) ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.
 15. A timer in Hotseat would be nice. If you're playing against the AI, use your watch. Otherwise, good suggestion. ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.
 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Maj. Bosco: Currently the game doesn't model ridgelines and other macro-features of the terrain affecting cover. Infantry cover is determined by the terrain type it's in.

The sole exception to this is direct cannon fire (tank guns, AT guns, etc.) If they are 'long', they will fly past, impact somewhere downrange and not effect the infantry. ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.
 17. 'Scuse me, but since when did participation in offensive actions become a requirement for inclusion in CM? If we would apply that criteria to CM1, I guess the Volkssturm should not have been included. Again, as always, I would like to see EVERY participant modeled! ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.
 18. The fastest processor you're likely be able to run on your motherboard (without overclocking) is either a Pentium 2 333MHz or a Celeron. How fast a Celeron depends on the clock multipliers available on your motherboard (I'll bet not faster than 400). Either way, check your M/B's documentation to see what it will support. Forget about any non-Intel processors since they won't work in the Slot1 that the Pentium 2 uses. If you really want to save money, you can opt for slower PC66 or PC100RAM instead of PC133, since the memory bus speed of your PC is only 66MHz anyway. If you want to upgrade the M/B and processor later, look only as PC133, though. Breakdown for memory bus speeds: Memory Pent 2/3 Celeron PC66 233-333 All speeds PC100 350-600 ----- PC133 600-1130 ----- I'm not sure if a video card upgrade will do much for CM, but they are so cheap now it couldn't hurt much. One thing everyone always forgets is to clean up your software. If you have lots of little programs running in the background (hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to see what's running), they can have a big impact on performance. Closing unneeded programs will help CM run better. ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit. [This message has been edited by IntelWeenie (edited 11-03-2000).]
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by kking199: Ok, so is this considered a Gamey tactic then?!!? Seems like it certainly could be classified as gamey.

Not necessarily, but a lot depends on the situation and who you're playing against. I consider it OK since dispersion is just good defensive tactics. I first starting trying this when it was suggested in a thread about the best way to assault a building. Notice too that you don't need to split squads to do this, but you can if you're short on troops. ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.

 21. From Military.com:
quote:
The Army is getting the lead out -- of small caliber ammunition, that is. Military ranges across the globe are contaminated with lead from spent bullets. In an effort to go "green," researchers discovered a substitute with less impact on the environment. Tungsten, a naturally occurring heavy metal, eventually will replace lead in all small caliber ammunition.

http://www.military.com/Content/MoreContent?file=FL_greenammo_swarner Gee, tungsten is not only better at taking out Tigers, but it's better for the environment! ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.
 22.
quote:
Originally posted by kking199: I have a few questions I wanted some feedback on. Split Squad - one tactic I have thought of but not used or seen that I know of, is splitting squads to create the illusion of more troops in an area. Is this tactic considered gamey by anyone and has anyone had any experience trying this out?

One thing this will do against the AI (or a human, since the TacAI takes over during each action phase) is provide "target overload". Sometimes the TacAI can be overcome by sheer numbers of targets and will tend to switch from one to another without sticking on one long enough to shoot. This is especially true for slow turreted tanks, SP guns, towed AT guns and artillery pieces since they take a while to turn. Just make sure everyone keeps moving until you're in a position to gang up on the enemy or flank him. Don't forget you take a morale hit for splitting, though. Mass your fires, not your troops! ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.
 23. OK, that's it. If CM2 has nothing else, it must have separate left and right textures so's the turret numbers will look right! ------------------ Cats aren't clean, they're covered with cat spit.
 24.
quote:
Originally posted by MikEl: During an operation I keep accumulating spotters as reinforcements arrive between battles. 25.
quote:
I thought all tanks have unlimited maching gun ammo kind of like infantry and grenades.

To see how much MG ammo your tank has left, bring up the unit information screen.
