1. Are you running from a PC or MAC? I'm only familiar with the PC. Are you starting the executable of the game from the CD? Did you create a shortcut and have that shortcut using the executable from the CD? If you are running the executable from the CD then you will not be able to save a game because it will try to be saved on the CD and that will not work and you will not get an error message saying this (at least I'm preaty sure that's what will happen). You need to run the executable from the location the installer placed it on the HD. If your not running the game from the CD then the problem is beyond me because I don't have that problem with version 1.03.
2. I have dicovered the joy of useing HT's. I was playing a Meeting Engagement last night. Started at 8PM and didn't end until 1AM, (damn CM for keeping me up late at night). I let the computer pick the troops. I played the Germans and let the AI be the British. The Computer picked two platoons of Panzer Grenadiers with halftracks and two platoons of motorized infantry, with two Tigers, one Jadpanzer (I think thats what it was called), and a Stug III. I raced the Brits to the village where the victory flags were, droped my troops off. Had the troops race into the buildings with a clear field of fire for the likely avenues of approach that the Brits would take. I then hid the HT's until I was sure where the Brits were comming from. Once I became engaged with the AI, I brought the HT's up and placed them either in the scattered trees next to buildings or between buildings were they would not be exposed to fire from the side. Those HT's were devastating to the attacking Brits. The Brit AI got so pissed that it dropped smoke on the village for about 3 turns. Me, I would have dropped HE on the damn village just to get revenge. Now, there was a discussion in some other thread about the possibility of the AI cheating when it comes to avoiding enemy fire during a turn. I feel it doesn't cheat. It all comes down to self preservation on the part of the TACAI. Toward the end of the battle I had decided to send one HT and the Jadpanzer to support an attack being made by two platoons of troops. The Jadpanzer and the HT were doing flank shots at the enemy while the two platoons of troops were attacking a church. Well, half way through this little side battle, out of the corner of my eye (so to speak) I see the HT backing up for all he is worth. And I'm thinking "What the hell, I didn't tell him to do that". I played that turn back and noticed that the HT was being shelled by a 2" mortar and that he (the HT) was performing self preservation. The Jadpanzer wasn't backing up because he did not fell threatend but the HT did feel threatened, so the HT got the hell out of dodge.
3. I haven't tried using halftracks yet. I'm going to try this in a QB with some Pumas. But I have been watching how the TacAI uses them and it places them (the halftracks) behind the infantry as fire support for advancing infantry. Or in scattered trees when on the defense, with some infantry has support. Sometimes it does put the halftracks out in the open and it gets toasted for it's trouble. But those halftracks still do damage to my advancing infantry until the halftracks were removed from play. The only time I use heavy armor (tanks, never halftracks) up close with infantry is when I have made sure that there are no enemy infantry within handgranade range of the advancing infantry. I advance my infantry first to the next clump of woods or scattered trees and then I race my tanks up to them so that the tanks can support the infantry on their next advance. I learned this the hard way by having my tanks pretend to be the 7th Cav To The Rescue and getting barbecued instead.
4. I'm not leaving until it reaches the point where comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.space-sim is right now. In everyday life you run into jerks. Even I'm a jerk every now and then. This forum has gone a little down hill, in the "lets be nice" catagory, since the game came out. But that is only because you have in influx of people who haven't followed the development of the game from it's inception. They are asking questions, making requests, or making statements that have probably been asked, requested, or stated when the game was being developed. We need to give these individuals some slack. If these individuals insist on being a pain in the rear, I'm sure this community will cause them enough grief to not come back. I've been able to figure out who some of the more obnoxious individuals are, so I just read their posts for the laugh value they provide. And I do not take them serious even if they seem to take themselves serious. This forum has not gone down hill in the number of interesting posts, there is just a lot more posts to wade through to get to the more interesting ones. 5. Today after work I went and bought some more music to play CM by. Some Mozart, Bach, and the sound track to Gladiator. I was also looking for the sound track to Saving Private Ryan, but couldn't find it at Planet Music. I'm going to checkout some more stores next week, after I get paid. See if I can find Saving Private Ryan and check out the Glory CD too. CM is starting to be an expensive habit! Well, it does keep me out of the bars and away from them loose women, as my soon to be ex-wife wife would say. I'm listening to the Gladiator CD now and I can see (hear?) how it can come in handy for those attacks in the woods.
6. If anybody is still interested in this subject. After a little searching I found the site http://www.warbooks.com/ and downloaded their catalog. In their catalog starting on page 15 (and on their site under Military Music/Videos) they have a bunch of Military marching songs from around the world. After reading the other posts on music and CM I went out and bought a few classical CD's by Beethoven, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky. My tastes usually run along the lines of Nine Inch Nails, so it says how much I like CM to go out and actually put down hard earned money on music I used to make fun of. Well, I will no longer make fun of classical music. I found that I actually like this stuff and the music does help set the mode for me when I play CM.
7. I'm having a hard time understanding why some people are clamoring for patch 1.03. I've been playing these addictive computer games for years. To me a patch for a game is for fixing something that was broke on release or to put something into a game that was promised by the developers of the game (TCP/IP was NOT promised for the initial release of the game). The first patch, 1.01, fixed problems that were found either just before or a little after the game went to duplication. As far as I know Steve and Charles delivered on their promise to give me a game that I could enjoy for hours on end, get my little tushing kicked by the AI sometimes, and all this without CTD's. Now, as far has I know, the only thing missing in this GREAT GAME (I've been waiting for a game like this for years) is TCP/IP (and that is not going to be part of 1.03), and there is always PBEM. Everything else Steve and Charles do to this game is icing on the cake. To me patch 1.03 isn't really a patch, it's just an enhancement to a GREAT game. Now, if I get flamed for this next part, no big deal, I've had worse done to me. QUIT YOUR BITCHIN FOR PATCH 1.03 AND PLAY THE DAMN GAME!!!
8. Yeah, go here, http://www.gamesofwar.de/ and check out the tactics section. You'll find out about more then recon there. I found the information very useful. I hope it helps you. [This message has been edited by MadDog0606 (edited 07-26-2000).]
9. This topic just made me look in my closet. I had forgotten all about the old SPI games I had in there. I'm a pack rat and I keep a lot of stuff that I can't bring myself to throw away. I found about 13 old SPI games in there, still in their plastic and cardboard containers. The games are Legion, Viking, Seelowe, Kursk, Breakout and Pursuit (The Battle for France 1944), The Ardennes Offensive, USN War in the Pacific (my favorite way back in the early '70s), Operation Olympic (The Invasion of Japan), Korea, Sixth Fleet, NATO (Operational Combat in Europe in the 1970's), Red Start White Star, Year of the Rat (1972 Spring Offensive in Vietnam). I also found a couple of Avalon Hill games called France 1940 (I played this a lot), and Panzer Blitz. Some of these games are pushing 30 years old and I still got them. I wish now that I had kept the games from the SPI magazine I use to get when I was a kid. I started getting these games when I went to a 'We Carry Everything' kind of store in southern Oregon when I was a kid (a long time ago in a place far far away). Damn I'm old! 10. Henri, No matter what you do your bound to piss somebody off. Heck, you could say "the grass was greener on the other side of the hill" and somebody will tell you that you spoiled that scenario for them (they thought is was going to be mud). Just cover yourself by putting "Possible spoiler" in the subject header if your going to talk about anything in a scenario that your playing. If they read it and then complain that you spoiled the scenario for them it's their problem because they didn't take the time to read the subject header. Personally I avoid reading AARs until after I've performed my own mistakes for that scenario. I've played enough tactical war games to avoid most of the dumb mistakes, but a few still slip by my superior intellect . By the way, was that your AAR for "All or Nothing" in the war-historical newsgroup? If it was I read it and liked it. I've only played up to turn 38 and discovered that lllooonnnggg scenarios with a battalion of troops (Oh my, I broke my own rule, now I'm going to get flamed because I spoiled a scenario) is not my thing and placed that scenario on hold for now. [This message has been edited by MadDog0606 (edited 07-20-2000).]
11. Your right. It's a beautiful map. But there's just to many units to handle when playing the British. I did manage to keep all the tanks on the road up to the stone bridge. I just called it quits on turn 35. I realized that scenarios greater then 40 turns (and more then two companys worth of units for the side I'm playing) is just not my cup of tea. I am very lucky in that there are not many huge scenarios. When I get a better handle on CM I'll more then likely play the real big ones. But until then my plate is full.
12. You might want to up the amount of memory. I've found with other games that they like more then 64Meg. Memory is cheap (well it is for me). It might help, it sure wont hurt. Also your Windows swap size might have something to do with it. Experiment with the swap size and see if that helps any. I know Windows says it's a BAD THING for you to change swap size, but you know how big companys are, they lie a lot .
13. chrisl I can tell you from painfull experience that the AI has no problem with the turret speed difference. I just finished playing a scenario where I lost two Pz IVH's to one Sherman because that Sherman gunned past my tanks and used the turret speed advantage of the Sherman to kill them both. Every time I've played has the Germans and the AI has Shermans at least one Sherman tries to do that manuver.
14. Check out the tactics section at http://www.gamesofwar.de/ and the articles at http://combathq.thegamers.net/
15. I was wondering why that British scout car was inside a house in "All or Nothing". I thought the TAC AI was simulating some British Tommys sense of humor (taking apart his commanders car and putting it back together in a house).
16. I don't know if this advice is any good, but here goes. I would split a couple of squads up. Send the half squads without the heavy weapons forward, followed by (but not to close) the heavy weapons half squads, using the sneak or crawl (use crawl only if not to far to crawl). Once those non-heavy weapons half squads make contact bring up the heavy weapons half squads to lay down covering fire to keep the bad guys pinned. At the same time try to do flanking movements with your other squads. If your lucky you may only lose the half squads. Try to keep their platoon leader close to the half squads and the squads might not panic as soon. Also, if you haven't visited http://www.gamesofwar.de/ yet, you might want to. The site talks about basic and enhanced infantry formations, how to scout and an assault section that I didn't see last time I visited and I'm in the process of printing on my companys printer right now . Schugger, I noticed that you have motorcycles listed as one of your interests. How long have you been riding? I started about 12 years ago. I've had about 5 different bikes (not at the same time, can't aford that). Started out riding Hondas (good bikes, but always had trouble starting them in the winter). My current ride is a Heritage Softail (finally got one the wife likes to ride. It don't hurt her butt ) [This message has been edited by MadDog0606 (edited 06-30-2000).] [This message has been edited by MadDog0606 (edited 06-30-2000).]
17. Was this happening before you applied the patch? I think I read somewhere in another thread someone else having the same problem. What caused it was that they were running CM from the CD. So when CM looks for the scenarios to play it is looking on the CD. And since the CD can't be wrote to, any game you try to save wont be saved (and you wont get a message telling you CM couldn't write to the CD).
18. I'm only just starting my third battle in this operation but I just have to share with the group what as happened so far (or maybe I just what to become a member, either way I'm going to post this ). I kept everything at the default setup. And because of my luck at the start of the battle I had to abandon the town my men started in by the end of the first battle (I'm playing the Germans by the way). My 88 bunker along with the MG bunker to its north were knocked out seconds into the first turn. Because the two 75 bunkers to the extreame north and south of town were more effective, the Americans decided to storm the town located in the center. I had to pull my Panthers, along with what was left of my troops out of town or have them overrun or encircled. And I did not want to lose those Panthers!!! I backed up my Panthers on the road inbetween the hills south of the town. And sent my troops to the tops of the two hills. I decided not to skip the night battle (I wanted to see what it was like to play one at night). I tried to sneak three understrength platoons into the town from the southeast, masking them with the woods and scattered trees. At the same time I was sneaking my 105 and 120mm spotters onto the hill just south of the town. My understrength platoons made it as far as the edge of the woods, just before entering the town, before they spotted what looked like a company of American infantry heading down the road toward my Panthers. By this time my spotters were in position (but being that it's night they could not see well) and I had them all target the center of town. I figured that was safer because I didn't want stray shells hitting my platoons (has it was some shells fell darn close). I then started to move my two Panthers and the StuH42 closer up the center road because my spotters were reporting vehicle noises to their front. At the same time I moved my two Stug IIIG's down the road to the north of the two hills to make sure nothing was trying to go down that road and make an end run on me. By the time the battle ended I had lost one understrength platoon and the Americans had lost what looked like 6 infantry squads eliminated, two 105 Shermans knocked out, an M3Halftrack knocked out, an M8 Greyhound knocked out, an M5 Stuart, an M10 Tank Destroyer, and a smart ass brave as hell M4A3(75) Sherman knocked out (he gunned that Sherman right between my two Panthers on the road like he was on fire and tried to get a rear shot at one of my Panthers. I had to play that turn back just to admire what that Sherman tried to do). I may have been unlucky at the start but my luck held in the end. The Stuart and the Tank Destroyer were probable repairable because they were not on the map at the start of the next battle. The whole reason for this post, and one of the many reasons I love this game, is what occured during the last two minutes of the battle. I had gotten carried away with the smell of smoke and cordite, the screams of men, and the sound of tank rounds exploding . I decided to move one of my Panthers closer to town to support what was left of my three understrength platoons that were battling not only with American infantry but one mean muther of a 105 Sherman. Well, when the Panther got close enough to the 105 Sherman I discovered that there was not one 105 Sherman, but two, and an American bazooka was in a house across the road and my Panther would wind up showing his rear to that same bazooka before all was said and done. The Panther finished off one 105 Sherman on turn 14. When turn 15 started my Panther was face on to the last 105 Sherman and butt on to the American bazooka. I found this situation not to my satisfaction (I was sweating my ass off!!!). I targeted the house the bazooka was in with two panzerschrecks, the other Panther, and the StuH42. I just wanted to knock the bazookas aim off (I thought a bazooka up the ass was an undignified way for my beloved Panther to go ). I realize now that it was overkill, because the bazooka tried to run out of that house 10 seconds into the turn and was eliminated from play 10 seconds latter. But I thought the battle (slugfest) between the Panther and the last 105 Sherman was worth the price of admittion (in fact I played back that turn about 5 times to watch it from different angles). Those 105 shells were exploding all around and on my Panther. The Panther immobilized the 105 Sherman with its first shoot, penetrated with about three others (I think this may have slowed the Sherman down some, shooting wise that is), and didn't knock the Sherman out until 7 seconds before the battle ended. I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [This message has been edited by MadDog0606 (edited 06-29-2000).]
19. I'll probably go out and buy Terminus when it showes up at the local EB (6/30). I want my open ended Space Opera (maybe this is THE ONE )!!!!. Terminus will then be placed on the HD and not be played that much for a few months because of CM. I probably wont get Diablo II for a couple of weeks (got to buy food; have to maintain strength to play CM ). Diablo II will more then likly not be played that much for a couple of months because of CM. 20. I've been waiting a lot of years for a game like this (this and an open ended space opera ). I just downloaded some scenarios from www.combatmission.co.uk and the one I'm playing is Hill 140. Just looking at the rolling hills, the Panther and Tiger tanks, and the infantry going up the hills almost brings a tear to my eye. I tell you this game is a work of art. I thought I was a good wargamer, but if I don't pay attention to fields of fire and cover, I get my head handed to me by the TacAI. I hope Steve and Charles make enough money off of this little gem to continue with the series (CM2, CM3, etc.).
21.
quote:
Originally posted by FutbolHead: Small world, I live in Va. Beach too. About 9 blocks off the beach in a neighborhood called Shadowlawn. You close by MadDog?

I live a couple of blocks from Greenrun High School. Nowhere near the beach.
22. FutbolHead, I live in Va Beach, VA. I ordered back in Nov 99. I just got home from going out to a group lunch. Saw the mail man had gone by already (unusual because for the past few days he goes by about 4:30PM) so I went to the mailbox thinking I was only going to get bills again and I saw the priority mail from BTS in the box. It was mailed on the 20th, my credit card was charged on the 16th. So take heart, it will show up. Tell you the truth I was prepared for it not to show until next Monday, but damn happy it showed up now. The only problem is I hear lighting outside and I don't like having the computer on in lighting storms. So I'm going to kill a couple of hours shooting my guns at the range. By the way, I'm on vacation , that's why I'm not going back to work until Monday 8:30AM .
23. Capt, You need to calm down, relax, get drunk . Don't start to worry until the mailperson arrives and then departs on the 23rd without leaving the game in your mailbox. BTS wrote not to start sending them email saying you didn't get your game until after the 23rd. Mine hasn't shown up either and I preordered in Nov 99. I'm not going to worry until next Monday (26th) if my game doesn't show (because the card did get charged). I've waited since Nov 99, I can wait a few more days. Besides I have other games I've had for a couple months now and haven't even played, maybe I'll start playing those.
24. Hey Phoenix, who put the stick up your rear end . I've been reading this forum since Nov 99. I just haven't felt like posting until now. Since this forum belongs to BTS I figure they have the final say on who can do what on this forum. And since they haven't done anything about his bitching and moaning, Capt Manieri can bitch and moan to his hearts content. To avoid his posts all you got to do is see his name in the left side column and bypass his contribution to the thread. [This message has been edited by MadDog0606 (edited 06-20-2000).]
25. Phoenix you must be using that Royal We because his posts don't bother me . Since this is a Tale Of Woe thread he can bitch and moan all he wants about not getting the game. Give the kid some slack, if you don't want to read his posts you don't have to.
