  1. I'd say Tigers are underpriced since almost everyone always buys them and never gives a thought to PzIII/IV. /SirReal
  2. My Liege, the testing of Rune's tactical ability is complete. As expected, he chose a completely unbalanced scenario, attacking with more than a thousand russians (Zulu) against a few brave defending germans (English). Unfortunately for the Zulu, they had a laxative fruit for a commander, and they died as they attacked, in hordes. My final rating of Rune's tactical ability must therefore be a resounding -13 out of a possible 10. I realize that this is not within the scale provided, but unusual stupidity calls for unusual grades. Details can be found in the usual spot. /SirReal
  3. Personally, running out of ammo can come as a surprise. You fire, reload and repeat until you just can't find a full magazine. The exception to this would be suppressive fire -- but we're talking assaults and firefights here. I know there are folks reading this forum that have been in battle, and a lot of infantry grogs, too. Perhaps they can shed light on how common it was for the individual soldier to keep 'spare' ammo. /SirReal
  4. I would just like to point out that everyone that's had some urban fighting training knows that the chances that all of the members in the squad will have firing opportunities at the same time is very low when clearing rooms indoors. Doors will usually keep the number of people firing at once down to one or two. Finally, throwing a hand grenade in a reasonably safe manner will force your squadmates to pull back from the door/window while waiting for the blast, so assuming four consecutive grenades that would mean some 12-20 seconds spent doing nothing much. /SirReal
  5. This has been a posting of the Keep Peng on the First Page Society. We now return to the original programming. /SirReal
  6. The tools at hand would be, in order of preference: </font> Map and compass. Requires you to know where you are, and that the target is near something you can identify on the map. Accurate to within a few percent.</font>Using mils. Requires knowledge of the targets actual size, and a good eye and optics. Error depends on skill, but maybe 10%.</font>SWAG - Scientific Wild Ass Guess. About 20% margin of error.</font>Optical distance measuring intrument (40cm), 5% margin of error. Damn bulky things to carry around, though.</font> Nowadays, a laser rangefinder would do the job with a margin of 2-4%. /SirReal
  7. They were debating about this at the time. The reasons for staying with 122mm: </font> Same ammo load carried (28x122mm or 29x100mm)</font>Firing rate unchanged (100mm weighs less but is longer)</font>More explosive power. (Better effect against infantry)</font>They weren't sure that the 100mm was actually better at penetrating</font>Both guns defeated Panthers frontally at 1500m or better.</font> To read actual memos on this, have a look at battlefield.ru. They have a section on the subject. /SirReal
  8. I was under the impression that you got extra turns while one or more victory flags were in contention? Or did I totally misunderstand what you were talking about?
  9. To be really useful, a map printout should have elevation lines on it... /SirReal
  10. "Rourke's drift". With me as the English. Suprised, anyone? I thought not. Well, then. I will deem it a total victory to Rune if he manages to have my forces auto-surrender on turn two. For each turn thereafter, it will be considered one level of victory less, until a Total Defeat for him at turn 10 and onwards. Very well. Man the stockades, here comes the horde! For the Queen! /SirReal
  11. Sir Rune, I apologize for overestimating your intelligence. Never did I for a moment think that your stupidity was so boundless as to actually allow you to create such horrid scenarious by pure chance. What am I doing? He'll never be able to understand that. Let me rephrase: Me sad call you cheat, me not know you very dumb. /SirReal
  12. Why not? Even should he win, who would hold it against me, knowing what a craven cheater of a designer he is? No, he may win the battle, but he shall surely lose the war. I'm happy to make your day anytime, my Lady. I'm not surprised to learn that Hiram obviously has failed to do so, at least today. /SirReal
  13. It would have to be, wouldn't it? I mean, if you actually set standards, you wouldn't have squires at all. Remember: No matter how low you set them, there's always be a maggot too fat to crawl under it, no matter how much slime and spittle is used to lubricate it. About that paper on rune. I think, in the name of all fairness, justice and Things That Are Right, Rune should be given an opportunity to display is unutterable lack of skill before I expose him utterly in that paper, my liege. So, dear Prune, you have a short time (no, I'm not telling how short -- that would spoil the fun) to either tell me the conditions of your spanking or send me your preferred display gameyness. I will even dignify you with a taunt. May your reproductive organs be devoured by frothing hamsters before they bring a plague on to the universe such that has never been seen before; and may Greenpeace cleanse you and your hovel afterwards so that the brave hamsters that consumed those vile appendages are properly avenged. /SirReal
  14. Not even one of the *ahem* female species? What are Finnish women like? </font>
  15. Nice and informative, as I knew it would be! =) What gun was used in the early years? In '41, specifically? Was it the 'standard' Lee Enfield with a x3 scope? /J [ July 25, 2003, 03:03 AM: Message edited by: SirReal ]
  16. You are all a festering bub of black ichor, but I'll endure your stench so I can tell my liege the good news. Joe Shaw, the Spanking of the SSN (oh, sorry, serf to Rune... aw, big difference) is complete, a neat little 71-29. Details here. In related news, that spelunker of pigs intestines, Sir Nieghham has decided that he wasn't gamey enough during our last romp, so he's selected a scenario especially for me. He's attacking. I'm hardly allowed to setup the defense as I want to (scenario limits). And it's nighttime. And foggy. Did I mention it's a foggy night? I think he's afraid that his troops will run like a gaggle of chickens should they be fired upon by an enemy that they can't read the nametags on. [edited to say: Glad that your mothers doing well, Seanachai. I lost my stepfather to lung cancer, so I think I know what you're going through. Stepfather since I was 2 years old.) /SirReal [ July 25, 2003, 02:43 AM: Message edited by: SirReal ]
  17. Hi! I'm looking for information about training, tactics and materiel used by british snipers during WWII. Besides general information, did they use "Rifle No. 4 Mk 1" (modified or regular), or some other variant? /SirReal
  18. You're forgetting he is a government employee, send the turn to his work email address. </font>
  19. This has been an emergency posting from the "Keep Peng On The First Page" society. Thank you for your time. We now return to our original planning. /SirReal [ July 22, 2003, 07:46 PM: Message edited by: SirReal ]
  20. I agree. Much could be done if they allowed some leeway to modders and tool builders. /SirReal
  21. I'm for adding a "order of battle" option, in addition to the "rarity" option: </font> North Africa (CMAK)</font>Western front (CMBO)</font>Eastern front (CMBB)</font>Unlimited (All)</font> /SirReal
  22. Estimated days to completion listing This list uses the average number of turns set per day, against an estimated 33 turns to completion. </font> Boo Radley - 3 tpd - 14 days</font>NG Cavscout - 28 tpd - 1 day</font>Lurkur - 4 tpd - 1 day</font>Mace - 0.6 tpd - 139 days</font> Exluded from the list are battles-in-setup with Lt Hortlund and Nidan. This has been a public service announcement from the SirRealius Cybernetics Corporation. Have a nice day. /SirReal
  23. Peng -- Anyone not in the challenge thread % (Yes, that's correct. The chance was evidently so low that it can't be calculated. A single '%' sign was presented.) Dr. Love thinks a relationship might work out between Peng and Anyone not in the challenge thread, but the chance is very small. A successful relationship is possible, but you both have to work on it. Do not sit back and think that it will all work out fine, because it might not be working out the way you wanted it to. Spend as much time with each other as possible. Again, the chance of this relationship working out is very small, so even when you do work hard on it, it still might not work out. [Edited to say that Nidan1 can't even spell Arnold's last name correctly] /SirReal [ July 21, 2003, 07:59 AM: Message edited by: SirReal ]
  24. That would be nice, but hardly realistic for the defender, and only somewhat for the attacker. Noone would tell armor to attack across a swampy forest, but if they got pushed into it, they might have to defend there. Jim Boggs, never stop feeling gamey. We might stop recognizing you. /SirReal
  25. Just to add that the need for high turn limits is especially true for Quick Battles, where you don't know what the terrain is going to be like, nor what troops you'll have. I once got the privilege of attacking, in snow, with the russians. I had some 40 turns. Could be done. But wait for it. The troops were unfit conscripts. I would have needed some 120 turns, since the troops got exhausted after wading through 100m of snow. /SirReal
