What is BTS working on now?
patboivin replied to Boris Balaban's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
They are working on the Cafeteria Food Fight version of CM. -
Thanks Kitty.

Kuhn'adjun eh?

Bruno, I have to disagree with this. Publicly traded companies spend much of their time thinking about "shareholders", who often have nothing to do with the product the company is supposedly there to produce. Hence you get MBA types who decide to create Deep Space Nine à la soap opera because it's a tried and true formula, or games-that-I-won't-name that put politically correct considerations ahead of historical accuracy. BTS, keep the money you earn, then sit on it like dragons, don't try to build leverage by watering down your product. Quality got you all those awards. Still they must have a gotten a good chuckle out of this thread.

Suggestion # 1 x 10^500 for CM2
patboivin replied to patboivin's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I am playing a scenario now where I picked off an unidentified AFV. By the end of the game I will know whether we can find out what the unit is, or not. -
I noticed a difference between Greens and Regulars. I am not sure I noticed a difference between Veterans, Cracks or Elites. I imagine it's a matter of degree. I *think* the Crack / Elite units are more likely to be suicidal, as they never seem to leave hot spots. Have you noticed any difference between these three categories of troops?

... probably already made, too! How about transforming unidentified units into identified ones when our troops reach said unidentified units. It would be nice, for example, to see Infrantry? units change into MG Team or Rifle Squad or whatever, once we are standing over the eliminated unit. Same would be true for vehicles.

What's slower than infantry in wet terrain?
patboivin replied to patboivin's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I think one of your Tigers (?) is now an empty metal husk. I don't even know what it was, we knocked it out before we could even identify it. I have to concede though that Churchills on Wet terrain are not a pretty sight. The word "lumbering" comes to mind. Ponderous. Crawling. ... -

Unfortunately, I didn't know that when I picked my units... -

Wait until BTS releases it, and you paid for it, and you're waiting for it to come in the mail. I remember the posts on this forum when CM1 came out, that was entertaining. e.g. Capt.Manieri got drunk, he was so depressed. e.g. someone mentioned that their mailman thought they were weird, because they were waiting for him every day. Plus there were dozens of posts from people asking the same questions: "How long does it take for the game to reach country X?" "If I paid on day x, did you ship on day y, will it take z days to reach me after that?" "Don't worry about the manual, I don't care. Just ship me the !@#$% CD!" CM Mod Quiz, Have you seen this one.....
patboivin replied to kump's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
It's nice and grey on my PC, with a dark blue dot and a purple dot. I am using Netscape, could that be it? -
I just checked the "revised" RFs for the Germans for 1944 onward, and I don't think they apply all that much. For one thing, ASL didn't differentiate very much between Western and Eastern fronts when they came up with those rarity factors. If you compare the rarity factors in ASL with the vehicles in CM for that year, there are some notable differences. For example the PzIII is missing, although from what I saw on the 'net, it seems to me that CM did the right thing by omitting it -- there weren't many left by then. Yet ASL gives it a rating of 1.3. e.g. 1944, listed by RF (.9 is common, 1.6 is almost impossible to find): 0.9 -- None. 1.0 -- None. 1.1 PzIVJ Marder (III)tM JgdPz38(t) SPW 251/1 SdKfz2 (vs. Russians) <-- there is always an exception to every rule. SdKfz 11 1.2 StuH 42 Marder II Marder III(t)H SPW 250/1 SPW 250/9 (vs. russians) SPW 251/10 PSW 222 (L) 2cm Flak LKW 3.7cm FlaK LKW 1.3 Pz IIIN Pz VIE(L) StuG 75/18(i) PzJg III/IV JgdPz IV JgdPz IV(L) SPW 250/9 SPW 250/10 SPW 251/sMG SPW 251/2 PSW 222 sIG 38(t) M PzA II SdKfz 10/4 1.4 Pz IIIL Pz VIB StuPz IV SPW 250/sMG SPW 250/7 SPW 251/9 SPW 251/16 PSW 231(8 rad) PSW 234/1 PzA III/IV FlakPz 38(t) SdKfz 6/2 SdKfz 7/1 SdKfz 2 1.5 Pz IIL Pz III(Fl) Pz M15/42(i) Pz IVE StuG IIIG(L) StuH 42(L) StuG 75/34(i) StuG 105/25(i) PzJg 35R(f) Marder I (France) SPW 250/8 PSW 233 PSW 234/2 PSW 234/3 PzA LrS(f) FlakPz IV/20 Goliath 1.6 Pz P26/40(i) Aufklaerer 38(t) PzJg Tiger StuG 75/46(i) JgdPz VI JgdPz 38(t)(Fl) FlakPz IV/37 If we go by these RFs, then one could argue that the units with RFs of 1.5 and 1.6 could have been omitted in the game, since they were so rare. I don't know if anyone will ever produce accurate "rarity values" for units, because how do you track what units were still around on a given date, it would take weeks to do that. Then people would ask "how many units were in Normandy on day x, how many units of each type were in Germany on day y", it would never end. BTS do the best you can, that's all I ask anyway. I didn't see any RFs for horses, bicycles or sidecars, that's too bad, it might have helped put an end to that debate...

Murphy's laws of combat
patboivin replied to von Schalburg's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
(Friendly fire demands retaliation.) If you are playing on a huge map in wet terrain, and you decided to surprise your opponent by placing most of your units on one side, rest assured that he is doing the exact same thing on the other side. -
My guess is the CM Borg succumbed to a Tribble. Sad story.

If you are desperate you can go: Start | Programs | Accessories | WordPad. Then press Ctl-V or Paste.

More Perfect Artillery Impact Sounds

I think it would be good to have accurate .wav files. The more realistic this game is, the better. -
Nest thing you know, they will tell us that the Russians didn't use mules for mountain recon units. sigh.
