1. One of my opponents mentioned that his Marder II and my Sherman 105 knocked each other out during a turn. I noticed while playing QBs that tanks sometimes do that. Is this realistic? To see units knock their opponent on the first shot seems like a bit of a stretch to me -- but to have BOTH do it simultaneously? I have never been in a WW2 tank, so I don't know how often this happened, if it did. Just curious if this is a bug or if it is realistic, it looks suspcicious to me.
2. Oh, my. And I thought that games on large maps were boring, especiallly when they are 3o turns long. Half an hour! We don't need half an hour for a battle! 12 minutes is long enough! No need for scouts... or medics... I would honestly prefer being able to let units pick up dropped weapons and abandoned guns or vehicles than worrying about scouts and medics. How about using captured equipment as well, that could be interesting, especially if we can salvage stuff from scenario to scenario, during an operation. Not going to happen, though. I wouldn't be totally against the idea of having them, I just know that I would rarely bother purchasing them. Unless BTS plans to introduce partisan units like in "the game that shall remain nameless". I am starting to wonder now what the special units were in Star Fleet Battles -- legendary captain, legendary chief engineer, legendary doctor...
3. Good grief people, this isn't an RPG, you're in the wrong plane of existence here. This is a tactical simulation. Given the life expentancy of people on the front lines during WW-II (my own gaming record as a commander bears this out), you can expect your "career" to last an average of two weeks or so, I believe. Grognards would have better figures I'm sure. In any case, if you don't do well as a commander, wouldn't it be fair for the game engine to force you to ride an armoured car for a while? Or better yet, wouldn't your troops' morale suddenly go from regular to green, or veteran to regular? Perhaps the crack and elite troops would just absolutely refuse to follow your orders, and the AI would take them over completely... Anyway, when I saw this thread title I thought "Oh, they're talking about my career in CM, as in... it's taking over my life!"
4. I lose to the AI about 30% of the time, usually because I think "what the heck" and sure enough, five minutes later it's obvious that I was reckless and deserve to be shot as a commander. I tell myself, it's just the computer, and I'm having fun... except I know deep down that I STILL LOST -- GRRR  I think the programmers did a great job with the AI, it's really hard to program AI in games.
5. I just saw part of a Canadian History channel program on Villers-Bocage. Apparently, Witmann's unit in one day knocked out 158 tanks and 132 AT guns. At first he drove parallel to the Allied column, picking off the enemy tanks one at a time, from about 30m away. He kept moving forward, killing the tanks one by one. At one point his tank was immobilized by side shot from a PIAT that destroyed a sprocket or drive train(?), so he left it, walked 15km back to SS headquarters, took over a dozen PzIVs back to Villers-Bocage with him, to finish off the rest of the Allied column. It is amazing what a decent tank, good training and experience, and a little determination, will do.
6. I know it's probably been mentioned before, but I would like to see another option for QBs, namely: Water. I would like to see streams, fords, dikes, bridges and rivers sometimes in the QB maps, just to add to the fun. I know it could be painful to develop an algorithm to do this, but in my opinion it would add a lot to the QB games. Maybe it could be simple -- if there are a lot of depressions in the map, link them together in a "string" and convert the bottom squares into water, and perhaps some of them into fords. If there are a number of lower areas, then you have a small lake. Then if roads happen to cross this criss-crossing line, add bridges. Just another suggestion, put that down as suggestion number 9,872 for CM2. FYI if anyone is trying to reach me, pls. send me an e-mail, I don't come to this forum as much as I used to, too busy playing PBEMs and falling asleep.
7. Bienvenue mon cher, amuse-toi bien. CM est le meilleur jeu de stratégie que j'ai vu à date, j'ai bien hâte de voir CM2 -- Barbarossa.
8.
quote:
Originally posted by lcm1947: You've got my interest. What is an upgrade sound mod?????????? I might would want it but no idea what it is or does. Is it a good thing to have??? Appreciate an answer, thanks.

He made replacements for the .wav files that came with the CM CD... ... just like the graphics mods, where people make their own version of the .bmp files. Pat.
9.
quote:
Originally posted by Michael emrys: Don't feel too bad about the clock, Steve. At least yours seems to gain time in a consistent manner. I have to set the clock on my computer every time I log on to the internet. Sometimes it's fast; sometimes it's slow; sometimes it's on time. Sometimes it's off by a little, sometimes by a lot. You'd think they would put a decent clock in a computer that's already going for nearly $3,000 wouldn't you? Michael [ 04-07-2001: Message edited by: Michael emrys ]

That sounds like big time shifts. The time slides on the servers I administer at work too, but that's because the CPU is too busy to update the clocks consistently, and thus the clock "loses" time, a few minutes per week. You can get timeserver utilities on the 'net to reset your clock 1/week or whatever... Pat.
10. I want bazooka gum in CM2. And chocolate bars, every G.I. had some, didn't they? What a major oversight this is. I haven't seen any in CM1, there must be some in CM2!!! (Another useful suggestion brought to you by... Pat.)
11. Hi, Has anyone tried to mold their own plastic models? Where on the 'net can I find info on how to do that? TIA
12. Try playing the Night at Cheneux scenario (off the CM CD) against someone. Kevin and I played that one a few times, switching sides, every time it was carnage for both sides.
13. It's called Jammer I think, or Tauscan. Can't remember which, although I would NOT configure either of these to start up when you boot your machine, be prepared to go get coffee, beer, snacks, go to the washroom, and a bring something to read before they have finished scanning your machine at startup. It may just be my machine here, some kind of timeout error that I can't track down... www.agnitum.com They are gloating today, but a few days ago their site pointed to the Security overview section. Click on the Security link in the left frame to go to it, it's a good read. Anyway I now have a copy of Windows95b, still transferring stuff to my laptop, will do a low-level format and re-install everything. It's a good excuse for me to clean up the computer. I can't install Windows2000, this is an old clunker of a PC with parts that are at least five years old. I am convinced now that if a non-teenager or twenty-something hacker organisation wanted to get into my PC, they could do it even if I have a firewall, plus McAfee or other commercial virus / trojan defence software. A system administrator I work with says he uses Black Ice too for his home LAN, but I'm too cheap I want to find something for free. I know I get what I pay for but I like the adventure. I took a crash course in computer security this weekend, and it was all a fluke -- if I hadn't had that Download Accelerator utilty running, I wouldn't have suspected anything. You can call me paranoid from now on, maybe I should change my CM Board username... I can still play CM though, so keep those PBEMs coming Kevin, Patrick and Stefan. I haven't been winning too many battles lately so I expect the PBEMs to keep coming...
14. FYI after downloading Norton Antivirus for nothing (it doesn't run on Windows95a), I downloaded McAfee AntiVirus and scanned my whole disk. There were five infected files INSIDE two .zip files, i.e. I haven't run those yet, therefore they weren't the cause of my problems. My PC is still infected. I have a little utility which showed me last night that port 1411 was open for something called "Executor trojan", while ports 1412,1413,1414 were in "closing" state. Since they stayed in "closing" state for at least half an hour on my machine, obviously whatever server they were supposed to handshake with wasn't responding. Norton AntiVirus, McAfee, F-Prot can't clean up my PC. Are there better products out there that would be able to remove ALL trojans? Oh I have a fast download utility called Download Accelerator Plus. What it does is search for alternative sources of a file, when we try to download something. Then it downloads the file in parallel chunks from these various sources. Just to let you know, it's not uncommon for servers in Eastern Block countries to show up, including ftp.kgb.ru and ftp.nsu.ru.. Those servers never end up serving files, they just show up in the download utility's list with 0 bytes downloaded -- somehow when we download stuff these ftp servers are sometimes there... FTP servers let us download, but as you must know they also can UPLOAD stuff. Beware! We are being watched, plus I am paranoid now because I can't clean my machine. Thanks, if anyone can help. If I don't figure out what to do by Monday night, I am going to low-format my hard disks and completely re-install everything. GROAN
15. A utility on my PC showed me that some TCP ports on my machine are in use, by something called "Executor trojan". My old PC is behaving strangely, e.g. I have to double-click on Start menu items to get a response, single clicks won't do. Does anyone know how to get rid of this thing? I have F-Prot on my machine, Backend, Jammer, Tau Monitor and ZoneAlarm, but none of the utilities seem to be able to clean up my machine. TIA
16. Ha, hah! They were using.... HORSES! Horses, horses, horses! We need horses in CM! Atleast in CM2, if not in CMBO.
17. Yes, I'd like to know his computer's specs as well. Exception error -- could be low on memory if it's WindowsXX. There is a utility on the 'net called TurboMem that would tell you how much RAM you have left, and how much you can tell Windows to free up. Also here in Canada I fought the valiant fight against my PC, and I won. For a while I had IE 4.75 on my computer (that would be parts of 4.0 and parts of 5.5). IE4 refused to re-install, saying I already had a new version. Reinstalling the new version seemed to have no effect. Finally I discovered that there was a huge patch for QuickTax here, and after applying that patch all my problems went away. It doesn't take much to cripple a PC... 18. Awww and I thought you had posted a sound mod...
19. I can only get 10K damaged zip files out of those links. I tried shift-left click, and just clicking on the links. It could be my PC here, IE5 died yesterday on me and my PC is a big mess.
20. FYI, here in Halifax we only seem to have one winter per decade where snow stays on the ground throughout winter. Well, this is one of them! Right now deciduous trees are covered with ice (freezing rain last week), plus it snowed last night, so the coniferous trees are covered with snow as well. When the sun hits them you have these glittering tree branches contracting with dark green conifers with snow on them. I'll see if I can take some good pictures tomorrow, it's really gorgeous. I haven't seen any Winter "freezing rain" mods out there, at least not so far. I don't know if they had snow like this in France, maybe in Alsace and the Jura. Maybe in Germany too...
21. Halifax -- East Coast of Canada. I read an e-mail from a database administrator in Seattle, though. He said something about peering over his disaster recovery plans, just in case more quakes will hit.
22. 17. But my cat has seven toes per front paw, I discovered last weekend. Very weird - I knew he had thumbs, but... [This message has been edited by patboivin (edited 02-28-2001).]
