1.
quote:
Originally posted by Colonel_Deadmarsh: I really enjoyed reading that article as I played a lot of D & D when I was a kid and I always wondered who those two guys were who created the game and why they started it in the first place. Very interesting to read about all that happened behind the scenes while I was absorbed in the game (circa 1983).

I laarned a few months ago that TSR Games doesn't exist anymore? What's this? Also, the movie company that is preparing the LOTR movie seems to have shut down the I.C.E. Middle-Earth Roleplaying effort as well, I was wondering if there are any RPGs left (non-computerized of course). Anyway, over the years I saw SPI disappear, then ASL was gobbled up, Judges Guild, Traveller, and now D&D and MERP. Are we making progress here, or slowly sinking into Nintendo/arcade game oblivion? I always wondered whether it would be possible to build my own computerized version of old D&D modules, like G1, just to see what it would be like.
2.
quote:
Originally posted by GenSplatton: I'm going to go out on a limb and guess Gyrene has played this game once or twice.

Or maybe it's adapted from that other game I was wondering about in another thread... what is it now? Baldric's Grate? something. Seriously, good advice Gyrene.
3. If I wasn't playing so much, I wouldn't have had to do it...
4.
quote:
Originally posted by Paco QNS: Well: a)you write books (and/or) b)you teach your children and pupils; It is said doing both during a mere three millenia bring your genes from a cave to the Moon.

Children don't repeat their parents' mistakes, they repeat their grandparents' mistakes.
5. Done. Baldur's Gate ?! what's that -- is it a Red Alert lookalike?
6.
quote:
Originally posted by Mr. Johnson-<THC>-: There is a book called something like "Napoelon's Maxims" which has just about every military saying in it. Its kind of cool looking at Sun Tzu and Napoelon and making comparisons.

Thanks. I just ordered it. You know I figure by the time we're old we know a lot, but then we die. So what's the use? Makes me wonder sometimes.
7. Great! I pilot. Maybe you can explain to me why the planes in CM rarely do anything...
8. I know one rule the Templars had: "Do not retreat if the odds against you are 5:1 or less." Heh heh.
9. I read the Art of War, and the Lost Art of War, and the Books of Leadership and Strategy, etc. etc. translated by Thomas Cleary. But -- I haven't been in the military, so there is a huge gap in my knowledge. I was wondering if there are any maxims or rules that you learnt during military training about how to plan, when to attack, when to stand firm, when to run, when to lay in wait for an ambush, that sort of thing. I thought it could become an interesting thread. BTW I am also re-reading my Conans lately for diversion, so this is on-topic for me. So, any pearls of wisdom out there that people might want to share? ("Don't attack with odds of less than 3:1", for example).
10. I didn't know CM gave a bonus to infantry facing enemy fire, that's useful info, thanks.
11. I spent four months in Champagne, France, and to tell you the truth, I didn't see a single wooden barn in the area. They were all made out of stone.
12. Just a little post to say... Thanks MadMatt for the work you do, and thanks BTS for producing the best game on the market.
13. You have been assimilated. If you haven't been assimilated already. -- CM Borg surrogate.

15. I guess that means they never got around to building the one with the submarine engine in it...
16. What happened? The forum was down for a while.
17. One thing I forgot to mention is... The recession in the late 80s early 90s practically killed the RPG market, and a lot of gaming companies went down. Task Force Games, even TSR no longer exists. What a slaughter... I am sure that video game consoles didn't help. Now another recession is starting, I expect people will be more careful before spending money on games. If they decide to be "careful" by spending money on high-quality games only, BTS has nothing to fear.
18. I don't think I ever really was part of the game software market. I didn't buy computer games for years, the last one I bought was The Perfect General -- had hours of fun with that. Although I did keep an eye out for "good games" on the shelves, I didn't see any, so I didn't buy any. Finally a friend of mine sent me the BTS URL and the rest is history. I think BTS is tapping into a different market than most other computer games, because CM players like thinking, planning, plotting, and then let loose to see what the result of the planning will be. Very different from those other games that depend largely on how fast you can click on a mouse.
19. FYI the airplane sound link doesn't seem to be working, at least it doesn't from here.
20. Didn't MadMatt get his wisdom teeth removed or something? Before he went on his tour of Europe? Before (or soon after) he was hired by BTS? Something has certainly changed, I don't know if losing his teeth did it, or if it was that trip, or being hired for BTS... He was sick for a while too, that can't have been good either. He used to update CMHQ every day, sometimes he posted messages 3-4 times a day! For a while I was even wondering if he was moderator for the BTS forums. Now he's plucking away at a keyboard somewhere, playing the trial beta of CM2, and he keeps forgetting about CMHQ and the forums. I think he's spending all his time in that CM2 forum, the one we don't have access to. Maybe he's the lone person in the warehouse packing all the boxes before shipping them to players? It's a sad, sad world...
21. Heh heh. I just had a brilliant idea. (don't tell anyone) I am going to download the CM2 demo, but I won't tell any of my opponents. Then, I'll start using it in the middle of the games we are playing. Won't they be surprised when they see my Sherman tanks transformed into T-34s, and my Pershings into JS-2s! Instant AFV upgrade! S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E !!! Nothing will stop me! NOTHING! Giark giark giark....
22. If there will be a CM2 demo, I will certainly use it. The CM demo is the reason why I purchased this game in the first place. I knew it was just a demo, but it was still a great game as such. I knew it didn't have all the units, or scenarios, but it just whet my appetite for more... So I forked out the money to buy the game. I am looking forward to seeing the demo for CM2, and for CM25: Above and Beyond.
23. I can't shake the feeling though that these river crossings were rare, commanders probably avoided doing that if they could help it. There could be an element of surprise though, tanks crossing a river when nobody expects them to be able to. I would still like to see fords in the game, though. I had the same question months ago, but I dropped it because BTS is spending their time on CM2 now. If there wasn't time to do things when CM1 was developed, or if items were not considered important, OK. But to say that it just wasn't done, or that this or that doesn't apply in tactical situations doesn't wash with me, the great horse debate we had a few months ago comes to mind. If a decision was made not to include something, then a decision was made. Let's not try to make up reasons on-the-fly to justify why -- life is shades or grey, and sometimes people make decisions, and that's the right thing to do. No need to start a big debate back and forth. CM is still the best game out there. [ 04-30-2001: Message edited by: patboivin ]
