1. Yes, be patient with this gun. Against the AI i used it quite late ( turn 19 or even 20), when the Panther rumbles into action. It lives on for a couple of turns as the AI persisted in calling smoke missions on my Panther and the gun remained unmolested. Against a human player ( it was his first game with the GD) it killed an 105er with an ambush. He played the game blind per Hotseat against me, so he didn't know that i have such a weapon. When he moved his tank close to Plomville and set up the ambush i saw the shock in his face when the thing made *Karboom!* and toasted his tank ( that was very satisfying ) Make sure you put the gun out of LOS from the Hill were the US FOs were lurking, so their Artillery is less effective. ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
2. It usually takes some time between the impact of the shell and the appearence of the smoke ( up to 30 seconds in my experiance).
3. I simply cant believe that i double posted in this thread.... "Ow my Gawd! I've lost me leg!" "Ow me Gawd, so you have! Do you wish one of me sandwhiches instead?" [This message has been edited by Schugger (edited 06-05-2000).]
4. I hold it with my sIG crew in VoT; there famous last words usually are: "Granatfeuer! Volle Deckung...."
5. Despite asking a perhaps useless question i become a member Ok, where is my Leather jacked with the full member CM Logo?
6.
quote:
Originally posted by Scott Clinton: In the situation I listed above I am 100% positive I had LOS and command to the mortars. I may try to re-create it this week sometime...

I'm at a loss, Scott! The indirekt fire rules work for me like a charm. Have you checked if you had targetted an enemy unit with smoke or HE rounds while using indirekt fire? Schugger ( who nerves sometimes...
7. Really cool, Joe! I will have a hard time until i know this epic poem by hard and be able to recite it
8. Ahh, that good old army stories. When i was in the german army some years ago we recieved brand new winter camouflage suits for a maneuver. We took them on and the whole company was ordered to make a "dress show" for our Company Leader ( Hauptmann Likus, will never forget the name of this bastard). He made his inspection but was quite unhappy as the helmets were still in this ugly Bundeswehr olive colour and didn't fit well with the look our new suits. So he ordered us to improvise some helmet camouflage which fits to our new look. The whole process take at least two hours: We tried to improvise something, he made his inspection ( all with this typical german PanzerGrenadier Drill), was still unhappy and the whole procedure was repeated. Then some Gefreiter Schuggerbaby was really pissed off to this senseless military dress show and took one of this long white underpants (?), we call them "Liebestöter", and put it on his helmet. All the Comrades sayed: "Hey Schuggi, are you crazy? You're getting into deep trouble!" But Gefreiter Schuggerbaby didn't take care of the well meant advices and reports as the only one of his company with an ugly white underpant and a big grin on his face in front of his Hauptmann. Does anyone guess what happened? ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
9. You can actually kill a sherman with the german mortars????? I give it a try when Black Sabot lifts his smoke screen for a while ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
10.
quote:
Originally posted by TinMan: I have a question. How come some captured units will not move? You give them the orders and they just stand there turn after turn.Last time this happened, I captured a panzershreck team (1 guy dead),it said he was captured but reloading?I seriously thought about trying to gun him down because if he escaped and kept his shreck(that he was busily reloading)he'd of had a perfect shot in the ass of a sherman 75. There were plenty of men around him guarding him but he refused to budge from the spot he surrendered in. Any thoughts on this?

Perhaps he was still panicked or so. I've heard in a different thread that some other players experienced the same problem. If you still have this file, check the moral condition of the surrendered Schreck Team, i would also like to know why it doesen't move. Schuggerbaby
11. Nope, but usually your tank will be happy to attack the next target in LOS when he's finished with the current one. ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
12. OK Sabot, I'll take your challenge. I set up VOT with me as axis at +25%, ok? I have to say that my PBEM experiance is quite low but i hope to make your life a bit harder ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
13. Sigh! Double posted again.... [This message has been edited by Schugger (edited 06-04-2000).]
14.
quote:
Originally posted by 109 Gustav: Moving the tanks out of LOS isn't always an ideal solution. For one thing, they could no longer use machine guns against their targets. Also, it would leave several HE rounds still in their lockers, where they don't do nearly as much good as if they were landing among the enemy.

Yup, you're right. I run into the same situation you mentioned for the first time yesterday. May 105 Sherman started to fire smoke rounds while he still had 5 HE rounds in storage. In the order phase of the next round when i assign a new target for my tank i simply ordered him "not" to use his main gun and the smoke problem was solved. I think the tanks keep a minimum of HE rounds for emergency situations. Schuggerbaby ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
15. It has definatly some advantages to repeat the same scenario against the AI time and time again: I've learned much about the game mechanics. Also i think the AI is still a challenge without giving it extra troops when you go to a scenario for the first time. My experiance against human opponents is quite limited with two never finished PBEM games with the beta demo and one Hotseat game of VoT, but be assured that this is very different from playing against the AI. I look forward to play as many as possible games against another human double blind once the game ships. ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
16. " I like to hit with bricks on me head!" *Boom* Is the concept of "mindless violence" modelled in CM? ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
17. I've played VoT on the german side more times against the AI then i dare to count and the US artillery seems to me the greatest danger for my troops. I always play with full FOW, hide my troops as long as possible and set up ambushes. I try to expose my troops only when the attacker is at very close range (i.e. stumbled into some ambushes), so incoming artillery will also kill some of his forces. Also, i let my bunkers do their work to soften up any attackers and take care that the Shermans have to be very close to get a LOS to them. I put the concrete MG pillbox somwhere in the village and it usually causes a great deal of damage to infantry at close ranges. You can wreak terrible havoc to the attackers with just your bunkers, minefields and indirekt mortar fire even without your infantry firing a single shot. When your Infantry is exposed the artillery will come down in one or two rounds, so you have a little time to prepare for this. You can redeploy your troops even if you have to use smoke shells from your mortars to cover your movement ( takes a bit timing) or, if you feel confident enough, launch a counterattack to remain at close range with the enemy. Everything is better than to stay in place to be bombed into oblivion by the artillery. When the Panther comes into action, the Artillery is a less threat to your grunts, as the AI is usually more busy to order smoke missions instead of shelling your infantry. This is why i love this scenario to play on the german side as you can train a great amount of different tactics: static defense, counterattacks, ambushes and last but not least how to use that precious german Panther to great effect. ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
18.
quote:
Originally posted by Scott Clinton: Never happened to me, yet. But kinda off topic... I mentioned this once and did not hear anything else. I have had the 81mm mortars in VoT never move and fire all of thier HE. Then when I tried to fire thier Smoke I was uable to. I had to move and fire the smoke directly. They were never under fire, and the HQ was (and was always) in control radius and in good order. I tested this twice and both mortars both times were unable to fire their remaining, smoke rounds indirectly but had no problem firing them directly.

Scott, are you sure that the HQ unit which commands your mortars has a clear LOS to the area you wish to fire at ( wether smoke or HE rounds)? Also, you should not target an enemy unit with your mortars if you use this kind of indirect fire or they will not fire at all. 109Gustav, perhaps you can workaround this particular problem: if you see that one of your tank is low on HE rounds and can only fire for say 30 seconds give him a Pause order and let him reverse out of LOS to the target. I must admit that my tanks do not run out of ammo, they usually die before... ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
19. Well Gespenster, I'm somewhat impressed ( and a bit envious I was in Laval recently for a working trip, which is approximatly 100 Km south of those areas. Despite being there for three weeks i didn't got a chance to make a visit. But your post encouraged me to fix that as soon as possible if my Boss gives me some days ( better weeks) off and i can fix my motorbike. Thanks for the Post and Infos Schugger
20. My Panzerschreck Teams usually have a very bad time in VoT: When they lay in Ambush, they miss the Sherman and were killed, when they try to sneak up to a tank, they were spotted and were killed. When they kill a tank ( not so often i can assure) the Sherman crew bails out and... well you get it. But yesterday i faked them there was one unsupported and buttoned Sherman that my Panzerschreck knocked out. The Crew and the Team duelled at Point blank range for two turns when my Schreck team suffers a casuality and runs for it. The Sherman crew, still angry i guess, was hot on pursuit... and runs straight into an ambush i prepared. I was really proud of myself, then, two turns later, the artillery came down.... ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
21. Oje! My first double post! How embarassing... [This message has been edited by Schugger (edited 06-02-2000).]
22. A question for all of you who visited the places: is it true that the French granted some of the territories were the invasion took place to the US and/or other gouvernments? When i took a look at some new Normandy maps the places were still named after the names of the beachheads ( i.e. Omaha, Utah, etc).
23. Done! I've already infected some friends and they downloaded the GD. All of them were very curious about the fact that this game will not be sold in Software stores, but BTS told me how to order per cheque. So I'm sitting here in front of the screen with the money of three friends who told me to order for them. I'm going to order tommorrow... or i try to collect more money and buy a One-Way Ticket to the Bermudas if I find a few more "customers" ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
