1. Beaten by four minutes! Man, i hate those dictionaries
 2.
quote:
Originally posted by ThomasZ: This brings up a FOOLISH question I have had but have been far to self concious to ask it. I know that some early model shermans had "short guns" and thus though their shell size was larger then latter models the ability of these early models to pierce german armor was significantly reduced (or maybe I'm confusing this totally). In playing CM it is clear to me the 75's are better tanks then the 105's, but logically the 105's should have more stopping power right? Thus I"ve been assuming that the 75's barrel is the longer version or some such. Could some kind soul not flame me and yet explain *GRIN*.

Ok, i give it a try but I'm certain that some other members here can be more specific. The longer the barrel of a tank gun is the higher is the velocity of the shell. The velocity and the calibre of a shell make up the kinetic energy ( or stopping power) when the round hits an armoured target. The earlier Sherman versions had a 75mm calibre the same one as the Panthers. The same Sherman has a cannon identified as 75L37 (?), which means that the barrel is 37 times as long as it's caliber whereas the Panther has a 75L70 cannon, what explains it's superiot tank killer qualities. Those Sherman 105 are infantry support tanks with very short barrels and very low anti tank qualities ( see their ammo loadouts in VoT which is mainly HE). When they are to up to fight against tanks they use special ammo ( don't know the english name for it) which does not rely on its kinetic energy to pierce through armour, it uses the same process like those bazooka rounds which "burns" through the armour. hope this may be some help for you, Schugger(baby) ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
 3. ThunderDuck, this is maybe a stupid question: Are you playing the VoT scenario with the Full Fog of War option? I allways start my games with this option and my FOs positioned on the hill never exposed themselves as the AI never fired upon them. Just curious Schugger ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Seahawk-vfa201: Well in a sense it confirms what I said. The AI used smoke against a *known* target, i.e., the bunker. I have never seen it using smoke as a screen against nothing, as a prevent tactic. And that is understandable: how would you sensibly program the "feeling" that an area could be used to ambush you IF the enemy is hiding there? I did not play much (only 10 times or so) but I have never seen the AI use smoke against area without having a visual on an enemy position.

Now i get what you meaned, it takes a while with me sometimes I never used smoke to cover my advance just because that there may be an ambush waiting for me ( to be honest, i've never thought about it). I think there are "cheaper" options, like the typical half squat ambush triggerers. I like to preserve my shells for bombardement and use smoke only in emergency situations, when a tough german tank appears for example and starts to butcher my rather fragile armour and the AI seems to do just the same.
 5. You should also take care of "how" you advance your FOs. If you use the RUN order constantly even when they reach the woods or tall pines tile edge, they're much more proned to be spotted. Those FO units seem to be prime targets for the AI; as soon as they are identified they attract a great deal of fire. ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Seahawk-vfa201: On my experience the AI does not use smoke in a proactive way, as when advancing on open area toward a possible ambush (Chance Encounter scenario).

--------------Spoiler Alert!----------------- Oh, it does! Those damn AI beast used smoke to toast my concrete MG bunker i've plced in Plomville. The bunker was so placed, that the US forces had no LOS to it until they reached the outskirts of the small village. After my bunker ripped apart some squats the AI layed a very dense smoke screen over the area in question, advanced a flamethrower unit, which miraculously avoided all minefields and barbed wire entrenchments, and celebrated a barbecue party with my hepless bunker crew. ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
 7. Moon! Is it possible that you're a "Porzer Jung" too? I've grown up in Wahnheide near the Airport ( suffered serious brain damage from those starting and landing airplanes D: ). It's a small world indeed! ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
 8. I only managed once to complete a successful flanking maneuver: Used my Super-Stealth-HQ with it's complete platoon and two attached Schreck-Teams. They were crawling all the way until they reached the deep forest and stumbled over the US support units ( Mortars and MGs) while sneaking then. You can imagine it was a lenghty process and when the Schreck Teams were finally into a good position to shot at two surviving Shermans, the AI surrendered! When i tried to repeat my glorious march to the forest, my troops were spotted everytime and draw heavy artillery fire. I'm actually thinking this AI beast is learning.... ------------------ Es gibt Tage da verliert man und Tage da gewinnen die anderen.
 9. I'm a Kraut too. I lived in Cologne for nearly 20 years, well, to be brutally honest on the wrong side, the so called "Schääl Sick". I was forced to leave my beloved city as i've found employment in a small city between Bonn and Cologne called Siegburg. To be fair, it is a precious little town with some medieval flair, but i'm eager to teturn to my "roots" as soon as possible.
