1. I cannot thank you two fine individuals enough! I've wanted to do more with Mods, but it was too time consuming, and too annoying to change things back if I didn't like something. You're both stand up fellows, bsoplinger and aikidorat! ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 2.
quote:
Originally posted by GhostAgent: I would like the ability to play a quick mission on one of my custom maps. That way all the terrain features would remain the same, however the units would be bought or decided by the computer if "allow human" is not selected. Perhaps a patch in the future could have this? I'm sure the team has their hands full with the tcp-ip though...

I would love both this and what Michael talks about, but, sadly, I doubt this would be something easy or quick to bring about. I would, in general, like to see even more 'user controlled randomness'(sounds like a contradiction, but what I mean is you choose which features are random, rather than just allowing the machine to generate everything completely random). A lot has already been introduced, but I would love to see randomness introduced in terms of terrain type features. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. Left, right, left right (okay, Shaw, as usual from you we're seeing left, left, left, right, right, left again in a funny way, then right, right, right, left, quick left, then slow dragging right. Stop it, march like the others). Sorry, von Lucke, I'll get the hose. And Aitkin, you loon, that's not by any stretch of the imagination a 'hamster' that's a Brown Norway Rat (Rattus Norvegicus). 5.
quote:
Originally posted by Mirage2k: I'm just curious. How much does a Panzershreck or Bazooka weigh?

According to the data on a highly cited on this Board webpage, the (empty) weight of the panzerschreck was about 21lbs. and the bazooka was @13 lbs. These are rough, I'm simply not up to translating the 9.2kg for the one, and the 6.2kg for the other. There were different incarnations of each of these weapons available, but this seems to be a good ballpark figure. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 7.
quote:
Originally posted by chrisl: I just checked this with an old PBEM file (also in 1.04) and it behaves the way it should-- it always ends up at the same time at the end of the turn, no matter how fast I FF. The movie is just a movie-- the calculation of the time happens during the execution (when the blue bar moves across the bottom of the display). Arty countdown isn't always 1 game second = 1 arty countdown second. If you are targeting outside the LOS of the spotter it's typically 1 sec countdown for two seconds game. There may be more variation to it, but I haven't been disturbed by anything to make me look closer. Until the shells are in the air the time is really just an estimate, based on the experience of the units involved.

Exactly, elementalwarre, what you are being given as a 'time until first salvo (not first shot, one or two of those arrive earlier) arrives on target' is merely an 'estimate' of reality, not a promise. The actual time taken, as opposed to the time you are told it will take, will vary depending on the FO's experience level, whether they have direct LOS to the target point, and other, more 'random' factors. You are not seeing a bug, you are seeing the difference between a 'promised' salvo, and when it arrives in reality. Unless I've completely misunderstood your post, but I believe I'm addressing the phenomenon you're describing. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. I had a Night Quick Battle where one of my squads ran into a house to support another squad that was being shot up, immediately to the rear of the threatened squad. Rather than assume it was reinforcements arriving, the threatened, jittery squad quit firing at the Germans that were tearing it up to fire on the troops I'd sent up to aid them. I love this game (although that part was certainly a trial; nothing like having the rescuing cavalry shot up by the people they're there to save to make you weep and bang your head into the desktop.) ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. I guess the answer, however obscurely expressed, is that the difference between most game companies and BTS is that the Mainstream Publishers stand on high, casting down thunberbolts and delivering games like commandments on what thou shalt play, whereas BTS, who understood the people, and were the people, asked the people how to make a good game. And the people responded. And BTS made the game. Complex explanations aren't actually all that satisfying, that's why industry pundits have to make them. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 10.
quote:
Originally posted by Ghengis Jim: Yes this is a basic question and I am very new, but I will ask... All of you guys who have been around the block, and know what your doing in terms of "being fans"; how have you been this dedicated when battlefront has just recently become a big thing? I do not doubt your assumed dedication to this company, because of how unbelievable their new game is. I am not calling you hard core fans fair weather fans or anything, but how are there so many hard core fans? I have been reading some posts, and there are a number of people who, to me, seem to have aided in the process of designing either Combat mission, or battlefront's webpage. Maybe these people are just really hard core, and really dedicated; so much so that I cannot tell the difference. But anyway thanks for putting up with me, I would appreciate any input.

Never been there, don't know that. But I heard tell from the old ones, the ones that came before. 'Bout BTS. 'Bout the Combat Mission. 'Bout the people who came and found the Game. These were the first people, and they were there before there was a Game, you know? BTS made the Board. I said they made the Board, but they wanted to make more, more than the Board. They wanted to make the Game, that all the People could play. But they didn't make it with a hammer, nor a saw, they made the Game with thought. In those days there was only the Thought of the Game. But there was no place for the people to play, no Game for them to be playing on. There was just the thought of the Game. There was nothin' to see, no graphics, no trees, nothin' but the thought of the Game. But BTS thinks there should be more. There should be some place for the people to play the Game. So they began to code. And they started asking the people, what should be in the Game? And the people are all different, and they want all differrent things, and there's a lot going on, on the Board before there was the Game. And BTS talks to the people, and it hears them all, and it thinks about the Game, and what the people want, and what the people need. And BTS says to itself "It's no good that there is no Game around, that the people should be without the Game. The people want so many things, but all the things are the Game." So they decide to make the Game. And they begin coding even more. And the people are coming and saying what the Game should have. And what the Game should not have. And all the time BTS is hearing, and they're doing the coding, and they want the people to have the Game. Because they know the people need the Game, or everything is just empty. So the people say: we want the MG and the people say: we want artillery and they say: we want infantry and the people say: we want the infantry AT and they say: we want the tanks most of all, because they will be the battle. and they say: we want BTS to make all these things, because then we will have the Game. So BTS checks all the things the people want, and then they begin to make the Game. And they code, and then they have something that could be the Game. So they take it to the people, and they tell them, we have this thing here, and it's what the people want, and we think it's the Game. But we're gonna call it the Demo, and you tell us if it's the Game, and we'll see. So the people took the Demo, and they had a place to play, then, and they had the infantry, and the AT, and the MG, and the infantry AT, and especially, they had the AFV, and the people thought it was pretty good. They thought it was pretty good, and they told BTS, 'this is pretty good, this is a lot like the Game. But we're not sure it is the Game, there's things we're not sure of, and it isn't the Game right now.' So BTS took the Demo, and they dove in deep, and they came up with AFVs, and they asked the people: Ha, Is this the Game? And the people said: Ha, it's good, that is like the Game. And BTS went back and found more things about infantry, and MGs, and ATs, and they came to the people and said: Ha, is this the Game? And the people said: Ha, that is even better, it is more like the Game. And BTS went back and did all they could with the things the people had said about what the Game should be, and what the Game should not, and they said: Ha, is this the Game then? And the people played, and they played more, and they played even more, and they came to BTS and said, This is what we wanted, and it is the Game, and now we have somewhere to play, and so will our children. And that, as it was passed on to me, is how Combat Mission came into being. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.

I remember that from "A Bridge Too Far", sounded like some kind of broken toy. The French had them also didn't they?

Don't know if the French had them, the Canadians are using them in the game, of course. I have a love/hate relationship with the Piat. Even veteran troops seem to have a fair amount of difficulty hitting with them. Also, they're slow to reload (this improves with troop quality, of course). But when they hit, they almost invariably seem to take out their target (most standard AFVs, anyway, haven't used them much against the really big boyos). ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 13.
quote:
Originally posted by King Tiger22: Hi, I may be wrong but i'm pretty sure BTS made the PIAT projectile bright yellow, so it is easier to see. Don't get me wrong here, i'm not sure. But please to correct me if i am wrong. Thanks, King Tiger22

Sorry, I've lofted tons of them at German tanks at this point, and none of them were yellow. Leland's got a good point about Piats being hard to spot. I've had them make numerous shots against tanks without drawing fire from either the tank or nearby infantry, unlike schrecks and bazookas, who pretty much call down a firestorm with their first shot. Also, buttoned tanks don't seem to realize they're being shot at, sometimes, with Piats, so they don't try to withdraw. Not as true with human players, of course, who watch that projectile lob in and decide to remove the vehicle to healthier climes... ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 14.
quote:
Originally posted by L.Tankersley: And the PIAT isn't rocket-propelled so you don't get the WHOOOOSH and smoke plume you see with the bazooka, panzerfaust and panzershreck. PIAT teams can be hard to spot...

Yes, and the projectile, in the playbacks I've watched, really does look something like a lofting football. As has been pointed out, the Piat was a spring loaded device, rather like a crossbow (what an odd thing to come up with, in some ways), so you don't get that flat trajectory you get with the rocket propellant AT stuff. They're a pain to hit things with (in the game), but when they do they seem to invariably take it down. I've had Piats knock out Tiger I's (okay, it was pretty lucky...) ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 15.
quote:
Originally posted by colton: i agree with the colonel it would make the game more realistic even to have a marker when a single man out of the squad dies not just one dead man for the whole squad

Sorry, not true. Please keep in mind that you are not just watching men 'die'; units take casualties, not just die one after another. Some of these men are wounded, some have, in all actuality, buggered off to the rear, some of the casualties are probably being withdrawn by medics, etc. etc. It is inherently unrealistic to want individual markers for each casualty to merely depict them as lying there dead. Besides the CPU hit that has been pointed out already, several times, (and that people keep ignoring because they want what they want, and aren't interested in the limits of reality), the battlefield would quickly become so cluttered with 'completely unnecessary to actual game play' casualty markers as to make it indecipherable. Please read previous threads on this issue. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Schrullenhaft: My personal preference would be to arm the AT/Mortar/Crewed Weapon teams with some sort of light firearm (appropriate for the nationality) and give them a low ammo count (5 to 10) to simulate the likelihood that they wouldn't be packing much secondary weapon ammo and so that they wouldn't be used/abused as in the manner of better equipped line infantry. I'm sure BTS doesn't want to make such changes to CMBO (if at all), but it would be nice for consideration for CM2.

You know, I rather like this idea, maybe with a few more limitations thrown in, but it kind of appeals to me. I really haven't weighed in on these team/crew weapons debates much, and I don't have a lot of problems with most crews going to 'pistols' to reflect their very limited usefulness, but this has a certain ring to it. I do wonder sometimes about LWAT teams, who usually fought forward with rifle squads, having no ability to defend themselves. I understand David Aitkin's point about using tactics to 'cover' them, but David, I have to say, there are many times in battles I've been in where these teams have to be right there in the middle of things, and there's no one to cover them because they're already busy. Generally, with mortars, they're a bit behind the action, and I have no problem with the idea that they should strive not to be swept into the fight. But most bazooka/schreck/piat teams simply don't have this luxury. Still, all in all, I think the game works as is, and this isn't necessarily something that needs recoding or immediate attention. Sorry, forgot to add that one of the problems with this that I see is modeling correct behaviour in the LWAT team. After all, if they have two distinct functions, infantry squad weapons users, and Tank killing pros, then which, when in the middle of a brouhaha, would they use. I know if my Piat team decided to forego a shot at a passing Mark IV to use their personal arms against a group of rifleman, I'd have them clubbed, skinned and distributed as sandwich meat. So I suppose the easiest would be modeling them with personal arms only after they'd reached the 'empty' stage, at which point, they become spectators. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared.
