Peng, I don't quite know how you managed to drag your fetid carcass out of the cesspool thread but kindly get back in there. Mop down that filthy trail you've left as you go too.

Knew it. He never posts there, but Simon reads the Peng Challenge thread, aka The Cesspool. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 2.
quote:
Originally posted by Shatter50: Hey Seanachi Is it wrong for me to be asking all sorts of questions instend of using search. I have used search but only specific info is given. When I ask others I get their views and sometimes additional info, and I also enjoy interacting with all the Battlefront members.

Nah, interaction is good, but remember that some of these people have been discussing many of these questions for 1-3 years. A lot of the rest of us have only been here for a few months, and even I, a relative newcomer, have seen some of these questions asked dozens of times, and answered dozens of times. A lot of folk want newbies to make a little effort and familiarize themselves with basic info, and some of the main discussions of stuff. When they do, then they work from a better idea of what's been said before, and can bring something new to discussions. By reading some of the older threads and discussions, you also learn a lot about the people you'll encounter here (like Fionn), and how to rub along better, who's got useful info (many people, happily), who's astonishingly helpful (guachi, for one), people who might seem like they want you to die, now, on command, and rid the universe of your presence (Peng, but he doesn't...well, completely mean it), and the few who are just useless sods who everyone else has to endure. When I came on board in April (when I started reading, not posting ), I'm glad I read a lot of the older threads. Not only was there great information about tactics, the development of the game, and innumerable Monty Python references, but I started to build up this mental landscape of the people here. It's really a rather marvelous forum. Some great people have left, but new and intriguing people have started to arrive. As soon as I figure out who Boo, the Space Hamster is, I know that I will feel more complete... ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 3. Sorry, you need a permit from Madmatt to use more than three exclamation points in topic postings... ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Shatter50: I wasn't saying anything negative. It just seemed he was saying I saw no such thing. Sorry everyone

No prob, didn't think you were being negative. Those of us who aren't useful for much else pay dues by helping newbies. It's good to have questions, but really, try using search on some. It's amazing what you'll come up with. I know that the sheer number of threads that come up sometimes is intimidating, but you'll get better answers in general, and sometimes find some pricelessly weird discussions amongst the fabulously informative. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by Shatter50: No I wasn't dreaming BUD. Go to scenario section to The Russians and check it for yourself.

Shatter, before you get in any deeper, please understand that Fionn is such an older-timer on this board that he knew Noah personally. He was a beta-tester of the game. He's done immense amounts of historical research towards producing this game. He is doubtless actively involved in doing the same for CM2, the Russian Front. He is trying to suggest you use the 'search' function to check on answers to commonly asked questions like this, where the info is readily available, in his own, crusty, heart of gold way ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Shatter50: Where you guys getting these little smiley faces and frowns. They are kinda funny. Also what is this member and junior member stuff. Excuse my stupidity, I have only been on battlefront for a few days.

You get 'member' status after 30 posts. Of course, they don't have to have any particular value, or I'd still be at about 15... ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by Shatter50: I have been playing my demo in anticipation of the delivery of my full version CM. So far only tanks and bazooka troops have taken other tanks out. My troops with rifle never even target tanks even close. Don't they have grenades or something to attack the tanks.

Yes, infantry close assault is possible (although sometimes costly). Infantry that have rifle grenades will employ them when the TacAI decides, and I believe the range on this is something like 100ms or less (off the top of my head, others might show up with better answers). Infantry directed to attack a tank, or that the TacAI sends against them, won't usually do much until the AFV is within 30ms, and usually not much then. I don't think a true close assault takes place until the tank and infantry are within 10ms of each other. Usual possitive result, depending on the vehicle, will be immobilized, and sometimes they actually knock it out all together. Chance for a real kill, of course, depends on how tough a tank you're dealing with. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Shatter50: Sorry for asking a simple question. I asked if anyone knew anything becuase I am new to CM world.

Relax, Shatter50, I don't think the Captain was referring specifically to you! There's been a lot of posting on this, some tongue in cheek, some apparently serious, and some apparently just to be bloody annoying. Given that we are probably at least a year away on CM2, I'm sure much of this will die down shortly. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.

 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Måkjager: Sorry Seanacha i dont have ResEdit....so i presume that is the reason why i cant paste. thx

Hmm, there might be other ways to go about it, but I think ResEdit is the easiest. It's a free utility from Apple, and I think you can pick up a copy at their website. Otherwise, someone a while back posted a URL where you could get it (in one of the Mac Mod threads, I believe). If you go get the program, I could give you a quick precis on how to use it to paste in graphics, but NOTE OF CAUTION: ResEdit is very powerful, and never work on an original copy of what you're modifying. In fact, random tinkering with it if you're not sure what you're doing can be very unhealthy for the software it's applied to. Make a copy of the original file, then work on the original. If everything seems to have gone alright, then carry on. If things become unpleasant, dispose of the tinkered with file, and revert to the saved copy. Also, if you check some of the Mac Mod files in the Techniques forum, I think you'll find some pretty knowledgeable people there, as well (I'm an amateur at this, but I have used ResEdit some). ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 14.
quote:
Originally posted by Formerly Babra: I just had a Churchill immobilized by one of the little bastards (damn you, Mk IV!!!), so I feel your pain

You too? I don't know if it was a 20mm or a 40mm, but Mark IV did the same thing to my last Sherman in a scenario, and I still don't know where the gun is. I might add that there's no way he's destroyed it, it's just immobilized. AA guns aren't tank killers, but they certainly can make them stationary gun platforms. My understanding is that tank treads and running gear and such were rather a weak link in the 'invincible battlefield behemoth' thing. A fact I wish I'd remembered when I continued to advance into Mark IV's fire, dismissing it as 'inconsequential, it's not going to knock out the tank...' ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 15. Alright, everyone, back on your little wheels. Hasn't there been a recent armistice on dogpiling silly newbie posts? Hasn't Chewbaca...er, Giles Goat Boy, led the way here for proper handling of revelatory, 'gee-whiz' sorts of postings? Everyone play fair, and behave like chums. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Offthewall: It is true that the men that are shown to comprise the squad are not individual troops but that doesn't really address the issue of whether there sould be a visual representation of troops taking casualties. As it is now, you do see the figures "jerk" a bit when a casualty is caused. The only difference between that small movement and bodies flying through the air is one of degree. I'm not really arguing for or against this feature. Combat Mission is the best wargame, computer or non-computer that I have ever played, with or without graphic representations of casualties taken. It would just be one more piece of eye candy to further immerse you in the experience.

Sigh...I really don't even want to hear the term 'eye-candy' and 'ruptured, torn, and unstrung (because that's what they are) bodies flying through the air' in the same sentence. This sort of thing has been discussed before, and has often resulted in threads that became very heated. I, for one, have no interest in this sort of crap. Most of the immersion devices in Combat Mission serve some actual, game oriented function. Flying bodies do not. Period. I might add that I don't remember seeing any calls for this sort of 'eye-candy' from vets on this board, and can't remember any from vets who served in combat. Go to the movies for theatrical, 'cool' violence. It's a lame, never-been-there argument that claims that 'flying bodies, gore, blood, etc.' are an immersion level that makes war more real, and therefore more horrifying'. In reality, requests for this kind of 'immersion' don't come from people who think it will make war more horrifying, they just think it would be cool. Total purpose defeated, and the whole, 'it's an historically/morally necessary level of realism' is so much fetid dingoes kidneys, as the arguments come from people who just want 'cool eye-candy'. This argument eternally comes up, and my feeling is, if the proposed change doesn't contribute a useful and necessary aspect of game play, then let the blood drinkers get it elsewhere. Sorry, don't even feel like being polite on this issue. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. He saw the Wizard of Oz dubbed into German. Told me he was never sure why it was so horrible, but the whole production took on this surreal, evil-Grimm-Brother-fairytale aura. 23. I will play either side, but for choice I will play allies, and I defend Canada (for reasons too numerous and silly to go into), and I enjoy Brits. Both of these forces have a hard row to hoe, especially the Canadians. No fancy equipment or specialized vehicles for them, thank you very much. I haven't played as the Poles or French much, because I can't tell when someone's been shot in the leg... I don't mind playing the Germans, and will more in the future. I prefer not to look on this as a game of nations, but rather a game. It is an elegant and beautiful tactical game. Every side in the conflict had their strengths and weaknesses, making for an intriguing tactical game. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 25. Hmm, I won't weigh in here on the discussion, except to say that I have occassionaly made an improper choice as regards retargeting, and felt sorrow and lamentation. One point for the original poster to note is that green line means a very slight adjustment, both in terms of area and time, and blue line, I believe, means a longer adjustment in terms of both. If you're looking to experiment, and get a result you don't like before committing to it, then hit the space bar and it reverts to whatever your firing pattern was before. I still make errors, but knowing this has saved me in any number of situations, let alone artillery adjustment. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared.
