In my depressing quest to find out why my all-powerful system seems incapable of running CM without lock-ups, I stumbled upon the fact that CM actually seems to run if I drop the resolution to 1024x768, as opposed to 1240x1024. I was able to run the gold demo at the higher resolution, and I really wanted to keep admiring CM in all it's high-res glory. My question to all of you: What resolution do you play CM at? Thank you Jonathan

I'm on a Mac Blue&White G3 350mghtz, so my platform might not compare properly to a PC, but 1024x768 (85Hz) is the highest resolution my machine will drive my 17" monitor (with an ATI Rage128 board, 16 Mb), so that's the resolution I play at. Everything's smooth, quick, and looks pretty good, and I don't have to disable any graphics features. Used to play at 832x624, but I think this looks better and works just as smoothly. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. Because the +1 thing only affects the attacker, a defender initiated setup shouldn't allow this to occur. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 5.
quote:
Originally posted by Formerly Babra: What we have here are two camps. If I'm in an MMG Carrier, I hope I'm serving under the latter.

I think a little point tweaking with these might be in order, but not way high. If you have them in a situation where they feel well supported and not very threatened, they can do considerable damage to infantry, as well as being great for scouting. However, at the least threat they tend to scurry away like frightened cockroaches, and it's very difficult to get them to stay on an assault. And, of course, they are very fragile...what mainly saves them is their speed, they move around like bats out of the Abyss. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 7.
quote:
Originally posted by Fionn: He hasn't apologised for what he has done. Hell, he hasn't even owned up to it. That is pretty poor form IMO. That certain people are willing to overlook his ILLEGAL activity ( and d/ling warez is illegal) because they can "get something out of it" says an AWFUL LOT about the moral fibre of those people IMO.

Sigh...Fionn, I disagree with you not at all in principal on this. I think he should acknowledge his mistake, and I think he should apologize to the community. I don't look for anything from him, because I think the game is fine as is, and I have no need of his mods. I have a thorough disgust of pirates, and a special hatred for warez people, because they try to underpin their selfish and useless acts with a mindles and indefensible philosophical cant (most 'Anarchists' couldn't keep an outhouse clean, let alone dig a proper one; their membership tends to be drawn from teenagers who've always had their Mothers to clean up after them, and Fathers to pay their way...how many of the 'Truly Poor and Disenfranchised' have access to high-powered computer systems, anyway?) My post was intended as a gesture to an admittedly young person who probably just screwed up, and might be looking for a way back. Far be it from me to take a dip into Christian mythology, but that 'Prodigal Son' thing, while annoying, still has some power. I think it's much easier for people to apologize and make their amends if they see an opening, rather than guards waiting at the door to punish them...And I'm not interested in the justifications of (mostly) teenagers, who's attitude is 'hey, leave the dude alone, we all do it.' That's crap. A real man comes forward, and says "I screwed up, and I'm sorry." If he's not willing to do that, then he's forgotten. But let's all give him the option, rather than picking up stones, and driving him into the wilderness... Again, sigh. Since I began the writing of this, I've seen several people come forward to 'justify' his actions. They should consider their own honour, and his, before excusing this sort of thing. I feel the community should give him the option of returning if he's considered what he did and wants to be one of the people here. For those who want to just 'write off' what he did...then I'll just say that one of the biggest sicknesses facing America today is this concept that NO ONE NEEDS WORRY ABOUT A SENSE OF PERSONAL HONOUR. Morality does not come from 'A Church', Honesty shouldn't come from 'a Fear of Being Caught', and Ethics shouldn't be an aspect of 'What everyone else does, and what it takes to get ahead'. Integrity is an issue that every person decides for themselves. But lets not push a lack of integrity in the name of personal freedom. That does no one any good, and everyone a disservice. Off the pulpit now (weird place for me to be, personally) ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 8.
quote:
Originally posted by CRourke: What gets me about the reviews is that most of them seem to miss alot of the real depth of the game...the things that make it truly cool.. I guess it comes from them only having played the game a week or so, while some of us have been following its developement for years.

Chris, this is so true. Figure a reviewer has a set number of hours to screw around with this game. It's not enough. I still come to this Forum and read things that other players have seen and go 'Goddamn, I wish that had happened in my game!' And sometimes it does! Truth to tell, I pre-ordered this game before I downloaded the Beta Demo, and most of the reason why is because of the comments I found on this site. The reviewers have given this game a big thumbs up...but they can't begin to understand its complexity and nuances until they've 'played' it, not 'reviewed' it. What comes through about this game is: even the casual user will get up on his hindlegs and say: Damn! This is Fine! ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. In other words, better than 6 times the 5,000 points you mention elsewhere? Or do you mean 3,500 points (read, Thirty Five Hundred points)? I mean, at a limit of 32,000 points, with an American Rifle Battalion being @2,400, you should be able to do something on the order of an Infantry division (minus support units). 11.
quote:
Originally posted by hcpookie: Someone please correct me if I'm wrong: 1. v. 1.03 will be coming out 'shortly' 2. I did read somewhere that the second round of CM CDs came straight from Battlefront with v. 1.02 pre-installed (this is referred to as slipstreaming a patch). 3. Release of the 1.03 patch will make all existing PBEMs obsolete and will require us to restart our PBEMs.

Ah, well, into the Valley of Death From the posts I've read here, Version 1.0 shipped on the original CD. That can presently be patched to version 1.01. Version 1.02 shipped out on the second print run of CDs, so some folk out there may have gotten the full version of the game as 1.02. The current Gold Demo version of the game is version 1.02 (but a Demo only, mind, with no new scenarios) The next full patch for registered, full versions of the game will be version 1.03 (which will include the improvements/tweaks/bug fixes (if any) of version 1.02, plus whatever BTS has patched/altered/played with since then. According to sordid rumours and repeated drum banging, that will be out sometime within 1-5 days of this post (and that timeframe is my own, BTS said 'later in the week', and that was like a week ago. The nice thing is, these guys don't seem to release patches before they work and/or cover everything they want to improve). The impetous for releasing a full version 1.02 to some customers seems to have been: they were already into the second print run, so why not send out the most current version of the game. The reason for not releasing the 1.02 patch: there was more they still wanted to do, and they still had time to do what they wanted with the game, since they'd patched the initial version even before it was released. In time, all shall be made clear. Oops, sorry, and as regards the compatibility of Email games: I've read the version 1.0 is compatible with the original demo, and with the Gold Demo version 1.0. As far as I know, version (patched) 1.01 is not compatible with older versions (they made major changes for security/bug reasons to the PBEM function). I can't imagine then, that PBEM files for version 1.02 or 1.03 will be compatible with older versions, but I could be wrong. I think your best bet is, if you're currently playing a PBEM with someone, keep your current incarnation of the game on hand until you're done. In terms of playing PBEMs with people who still have the older version: they should upgrade, or buy the full version of the game. The version involved could easily be ascertained by email with potential opponents. Talk to each other. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. He did the right thing, but he made a wrong decision. He seems to be a supporter of the game, and while no one should condone supporting warez/pirated software, I think his mistake was that of youth, and a failure to consider all the implications of his actions (and man, I can't cast too many rocks in that direction). The community, having pointed out that he made an error in judgement, can still invite him back, and still acknowledge that what he did was wrong. He can either choose to come back, and be a valued member again, or go off and sulk like a child, and remain unrepentant. 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Scott Clinton: Hmmmm...are these not possible now? "Seek and Destroy" is possible by just NOT placing any flags and makeing the scenario a destroy type. "Building Control" is possible by placing small (or large) flags in or near each building you think is valuable. "Exiting games" are also in the game. You can set it so that one player gets points for exiting units. Am I missing your meaning?

Scott, I think he's specifically refering to the Quick Battle generator, rather than the Scenario Creator. The retention of the term DYO (Do Your Own) is, I think, causing confusion on this Board. I realize that many of the old timers retain the use of the term, but many newcomers take one meaning for it, and some take another. The problem is is that nowhere in the manual or game is the term DYO used, so there's no standardization of meaning. I've noticed this in other places; I wish an agreed upon useage for the two different methods of battle creation could be found. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. But I don't know the mean of "ladder game", can any kind guy out there tell me , thank you in advance!! p.s. English is not my primary language, I am still learning it.

Basically, the 'Ladder' is a listing & ranking of players involved in PBEM games (and eventually, TCP/IP as well, I imagine). When someone wins (or loses), they go to the site hosting the ladder (which right now I believe is Combat Mission HQ on The Gamers Net) and enter their win, loss, points, etc. With each game the ranking of players on the 'ladder' moves up, or down, a rung depending on how well they are doing. The purpose is so that the very best players can make their way to some sort of Olympus for CM players, and from this exalted height, cast down excrement on those below them. The ones in the middle of the ladder or ranking then cast excrement down on to those at the bottom of the ladder. Those at the very bottom of the ladder usually have to eat the excrement. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 24. Okay, I'm more than familiar with the phenomenon of playing too much CM. Friends and Family members' eyes glaze over while I animatedly talk about the game. Many are treating me like some kind of wargaming version of a Jehovah's Witness, and are beginning to bark at me that they don't want to play the Demo, whether I download it for them or not ('Have you heard the glad word abut Combat Mission? Perhaps I could just leave you with this Zip disk of our Demo and some screen shots. Be sure to check out the Quicktime movie. You, too, could be knocking out Pzkw IVs if you accept Combat Mission as your personal wargame...). But there's an equally insidious phenomenon, that of the Combat Mission Forum. I mean, I'm coming here way too much. It used to be a means of getting answers to FAQ and game features. Then the philosophy behind design decisions and aspects of game play. Then, after i got the Demo, it was a way to find info about tactics and weapons performance. Finally, it was my link to when I would get the game. But lately, it's gotten a little strange. Instead of focusing in on topics like "Machine Guns: Little Nancy Boys, or Battlefield Titans?" or "While Playing CM Today I couldn't Help But Notice That My Expectations Regarding the Invincibility of My Forces Were Not Met...Bug Suspected, Major Recoding Suggested...". Instead, I'm hurrying to topics like "CM Brought in by Moose-carts & Sheer Guts to Brave Canadians Who've Held for Almost 3 Weeks Without Resupply", and "Australians Announce Major Offensive to New Zealand to Seize Vital Combat Mission CDs". I mean, I found myself starting to keep a mental check list of where CM was. Then I started worrying about where it hadn't shown. Then, it got even weirder as I began worrying about communities, or even individual soldiers! I found myself checking in going 'Goodness, I wonder if gaffertape's gotten his up in Canada yet? Ah, I see where kumps finally gotten his, one less worry there...but what about Andreas? I thought I saw where some in Manchester are getting them, but did Andreas? Maybe I better do a search..." Ahhhh! I don't know any of these people! I'm starting to keep tabs on lots of them, though...and now Seahawk? Has he gotten his yet? When did he order? Aggghhhhhh! Help me... ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared.
