I pity the poor bastard, I really do.

MEEKS, YOU HORRIBLE LITTLE MAN! YOU THINK YOU'RE READY TO PLAY THIS SORT OF GAME, DO YOU LADDIE?! WELL, AS FAR AS THE OTHER MEMBERS HERE ARE CONCERNED, THE LIGHTS ARE ON, BUT NO ONE'S HOME EXCEPT THE DOG, BARK! BARK! BARK! BARKING MAD, THAT IS! Now, Meeks, you've found a happy little homeland that accepts, in it's own weird way, your eccentricities. You don't want to be coming out here and poking a stick at Board members until someone feels the best bet is to shoot you through both lungs. This could just be the twelve pak of mixed ales talking (I'm speaking of me, laddie, not you, you've gone way past the two-four), but I think you should take the cheese, and ignore what's behind abusing other Board members #3 and just ease back into the Cesspool. There's a way to go about teasing, and there's a way of going about pissing people off, and I think you want to come get some more PBEMs in the Peng Challenge thread. Lock downs and angry people arent' a measure of success, don't you know. 'Scuse us, all, while we try and ease this fellow out to where he can't do himself any harm... ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 2.
quote:
Originally posted by Von Brizee: I was just posting this because I was doing a PBEM and I put 2 schreck teams in forward positions on a hill in some woods. I killed a Greyhound, 2 Shermans, and a halftrack with them. He cried "Gamey" and ended the game right there. I was just wondering what the people here have to say.

Initial setup? Or even moved to contact? I don't see this as gamey, I see this as an opponent who doesn't want to lose looking for reasons for being a baby. Unless Von Brizee is withholding info or misrepresenting (which I would never assume, but have to consider so as not to be unfair to his opponent), I call the behaviour of the person who quit as poor sportsmanship of the very worst calibre. Even if I felt something an opponent had done was 'gamey', I'd play it out, even if we disagreed. This sounds like gutless whinging, but without hearing both sides, I'm possibly being unfair. This may be an odd and potentially dangerous tactic, but it could just as well be described as a well executed ambush. But anyone who'd lost this kind of force because of superior enemy tactics, or by the stupidity of not screening their forces, and immediately cries 'gamey' and quits the game, is useless, and an opponent of no account. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 3. Ah, Meeks, like the moth to the flame, like the turkey buzzard to the rotting carcass, like the manic-depressive to the hydro-therapy, you are once again moved to post weird c'mons to all takers. As a Minnesotan, all I can ask is: Are you trying to make this into one of your cesspools? As I had cause to say to Peng recently: Meeks is as crazy as a treeful of rats... ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Gunslinger: Now, if I got your message wrong and you were only implying you wanted to make money by having banner ads on your site (Having companys pay for those ads), that is a totally different matter and I will apologize. However if your suggesting of going against what everyone else here is doing and start charging for your mods then I say good luck, because you will need it.

Gunslinger, I would venture a guess that Pillar is speaking of making money off of advertising banners for fan sites, rather than some attempt to make money by selling stuff to fans. Also, as has been said before about poster's language useage: please don't assume everyone here is using English (and American English, at that) as their first language. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 5. While anything Mr. Waters says about hamsters may be taken as reliable, fuller discussions of all aspects of rodent warfare are found in the Peng Challenge thread. Unfortunately, they are rather badly intermixed with the inhabitants wars with each other, and are not discussed with anything like the decorum John brings to his posts. Still, for the last word on rodent silliness, it is your one stop place to shop. Please pull on gum boots before entering. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 6.
quote:
Originally posted by IntelWeenie: 2) Yes, I fear this is the killer for my idea. But if it's a good position to begin with, the TacAI should not adjust it, shouldn't it?

You're asking the TacAI to 'judge' what is a good position, but good for what? Being in cover? Getting the right angle to shoot at another unit? Cover an area against enemy movement? You know why you are putting a unit where you do, and what you're attempting to do with it. The TacAI cannot know this. If you give it permission to move your units to what it thinks is the best position, be prepared to spend a lot of time screaming: Not there! Not there! What are you thinking!!! I don't think this is simply an issue of not wanting to give up control over units, but a more significant one of how would the TacAI know what it is you're trying to achieve. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 7. Hmm, stupidest thing...well, when I was first playing the Demo, I can't tell you how much time I spent moving troops right into the cover of those individual 'trees'. Didn't occur to me that the shaded area around the 'trees' was all similar terrain, and that the trees were just graphic indicators and there for immersion's sake. Oh, and losing to Peng. They're still throwing filth on me in the Peng Challenge Thread(aka Cesspool). ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. But he's right, PawBroon, let us scurry back over to the Peng challenge thread where even folk like you and I are always welcome, and allow these gentlemen to get on with their games. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Elijah Meeks: Of course you will. Please repost this message in our "Helpful Players in support of Newbies" section, the thread with the topic "Peng, I take our challenge public." There, dozens of hardened CMers will help you get acclimated to this wonderful game and its confusing terminology.

Leave newbies alone, you rodent! Get back to the Thread of Threads, or start another 'soon to be locked down' philosophical discussion (Bobbaro will probably follow you over). And don't whine about not having an turn from me yet, it's your own fault for making me play the Axis. Like Jsoh, I have to go read up on my unit types so as to find the right hammer to nail you with. Jsoh, if you enjoyed the Demo at all, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't enjoy the game even more. Experiment with it; playing against the computer will help familiarize you with the unit types and what they can do. Also, there are a number of articles over at the Combat Mission HQ http://combathq.thegamers.net/ that help explain some good, basic tactics that might help. And there are many helpful people here on this Board, who would be happy to answer straightforward questions, or help point the way to where you could get good answers. This game is surprisingly easy to pick up and get going with quickly. Getting good at it takes a little longer, but the journey's great fun. The manual is easy to use, and there are a couple of tutorial scenarios included with the full game. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 14.
quote:
Originally posted by Capt. Lortie: Hello, I would like to submit the the CM community some problems I encountered while practicing my skills as a German sniper. It seems my snipers are just not able to kill infantry troops now matter what I do. I have tried everything; from green to crack, from range of 50 meters to 600 and from firing to an enemy exposed on a road to firing on an enemy well hidden. So far, in no less than 15 CM games, I have yet to see ONE kill credited to my snipers. Do you guys have any hints on this matter? I would really appreciate any tips, as the only competence of my snipers lies in their suppressing fire. Thanks for the info

I'll pass on to you what I've seen in other posts on the board, as well as what I've seen myself. First, remember that you're soldier is not a sniper, but a sharpshooter(this distinction has been discussed extensively elsewhere, including good comments from BTS). What this basically boils down to is they are very good, but not magical, marksman. One shot does not equal one kill. That said, they are still very good marksman. Next, they do better if you leave them alone, rather than issuing them orders. When I first used them, I kept assigning them targets, many of which were pointless or stupid. I (and posts I've read from others) suggest letting them pick their own targets, just get them into a place (elevation, good cover, great field of fire, etc.) where they can do their stuff. Given that they have an ammo load (somewhat abstracted) of '10', is it really all that useful for them to knock off 1-2 guys in a squad? Far better for them to kill mortar crews, MG crews, HQs units, Tank Commanders, etc., rather than knocking off a few infantrymen. Next, their stealth and the difficulty of spotting them is what makes them very effective. Firing on close by infantry squads, or assigning them targets that will get them excessively noticed is a good way to destroy their effectiveness. They draw fire, get suppressed, etc., and they, as an individual without support, are much more likely to seek new locales when they start drawing fire. Finally, in my personal opinion, the 'identified kills' section of your unit info screen is fun, but pointless. Do not rely on it for real information about how well a unit has done. It will not show kills that took place before a unit reached the 'fully identified' state (except for the vehicles when you get 'unknown vehicle' destroyed) where you know how many men, etc there are in the unit fired upon. If you are using this as an accurate indicator of how effective certain units or troops are, you are going to be led badly astray. Use it to check out who did well when things got up close and deadly, but chances are you'll already know who did well. Occasionally it can be a good way of determining which unit managed to kill and AFV when you had a couple it could have been and can't tell from the playback. Also, don't always assume that a unit is merely being suppressed. I think sometimes these 'suppressions' are actually the result of a unit taking a casualty. No hard proof, in many cases, but just a gut feeling. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Shatter50: Come on guys I need some help don't let me down I got a buddy online playing CM for the first time with me.

Okay, Shatter, you don't start a game from within Multiplayer. First go to play a game and either open a scenario, choose a side, then you will get a screen asking if you want to play it via email. Click that option, and things will proceed. From then on, once that first email file is created (which should then appear in the PBEM folder), you will click on the Join Multiplayer, and choose load email, etc. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Shatter50: Ya its Shatter again with more questions. I have tried reading and searching the process to download a scenario. Can anyone tell me how it is done. Look on the bright side soon all my questions will be gone and I won't be a newbie anymore.

Er, Shatter, people will probably need more info. Where are you trying to download from? Or are you asking where's the best place to download scenarios. Otherwise, download a scenario from a site like CMHQ, and place it in your Scenario folder. People need more to work with though, I'm after thinking, on your question. What OS are you using, Mac or Windows? The download process would be basically the same, but anyone giving you advise would use different terminology. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared.
