  1. Interested in your point regarding surrendering. I'm currently playing a game where surrender has definitely been an option for several turns now. Almost immediately, though, it struck me that I shouldn't rob my opponent of the thrill of a true victory (despite the fact that my ladder score is going to really reek - I should be playing in the newbie pond). For myself, I won't choose to quit until I know that I have no chance at all. GAFF
  2. Hey! Just noticed you're from Halifax! Nice to see yet another Canadian join the fray of CM. One of my best friends went to Dalhousie out your way. Welcome! GAFF
  3. Do a search on 'civilian'. This topic arose just days ago. If I recall, the short time span of the game combined with excessive processor hogging and the potential for game-based war crimes have combined to eliminate this as a possibility for CM. Check out the search engine, though. GAFF
  4. At work: Way too much. I'd say ten times minimum. At home, I don't generally use the net for anything other than sending PBEMs. The T-1 connection at work has spoiled me so. GAFF
  5. And don't forget the welded 'teeth' mounted on some Shermans and Stuarts designed to breach the hedgerows.
  6. Maximus: There is some truth in that, but there is also truth in the rest of the British soldier's statement in A Bridge Too Far: They could have gone up that road, yes, but their infantry was still fighting and hadn't caught up to the armoured column. As you yourself have posted, tanks without infantry are easy prey; particularly when XXX Corps were restricted to a single road. GAFF
  7. tom w or aka tom w: Panzer Elite, which I do like, does a rather poor job with destroyed vehicles. This may have been rectified in a mod or a patch (I've been playing strictly CM since the beta demo came out), but in the basic game all dead vehicles are just jet black hulks. No colour at all. It's one of the few bad points with the game. Forgive me PE players if I'm a bit behind the times on this. I DO like the game. GAFF [This message has been edited by gaffertape (edited 06-07-2000).]
  8. Welcome Abrams. These are giddy times for us, as we await the final game. It always makes us feel gratified when someone echoes the same feelings we have. Mind you, I'm a relative newcomer too (since October maybe) compared to some die hards on this forum . Nice to have you aboard. GAFF [This message has been edited by gaffertape (edited 06-07-2000).]
  9. Question for ya. I have a 16meg Voodoo 2 card, BUT my system itself only has 32megs of RAM. Would adding more RAM be beneficial with these new mods? GAFF
  10. This is a topic I've pondered quite a bit myself. I've been fascinated by war, and particulary World War Two, since I was a kid. Yet I've never wanted to own a gun or join the army. I tell myself that I'm fascinated by the equipment (tanks, etc.), but then why do I continue to read personal accounts of battle? Perhaps its a way of trying to explore the darker side of human nature. In addition, it can help us to understand a very different environment and truly appreciate the sacrifices of a generation. Just my 2 Canadian cents (not much)
  11. Screamin Demon: I haven't heard 'swored' since I was eight. I squealed with laughter. Nice.
  12. Thanks, 'waffen' for asking the question I wanted to ask. And thanks for the reply, Madmatt. GAFF
  13. NotnowJohn: No email? Anyway, I own both 'Queen of the Skies' and 'Patton's best'. I think the B17 game was the better of the two; Patton's Best didn't have the right 'feel'. In addition, any unidentified german AT guns were treated as 88s, and any unidentified tanks were treated as Tigers. It unbalanced things just a bit. GAFF
  14. Its a terrific gun, but for that very reason, the Amis will try to kill it ASAP. And it can't run.
  15. I've often wondered the same thing. I know that the Sherman was ideal for shipping overseas (size and weight), which was something Germany didn't have to deal with in 44. It was also quite a reliable vehicle mechanically. But it does seem to me that a lot of allied crews could have been spared, had they been provided with a more heavily armed and armoured fighting machine. GAFF
  16. AWESOME! I've been waiting for this post. I'm going to check my balance now too (and hope its not in the red). GAFF
  17. I see the point of the article, and I agree (to a degree) about the dangers of historical distortion. I also realize that these articles are not penned by members of this board, so my response whould not be taken personally. However, I do think some of the criticism is off base. 'Gallipoli' didn't take into account that more British than Australians died in World War One? Well no. 'Dinosaur' didn't tell me that either. Why? Because those movies weren't focused on the British in World War One. Some have complained that Private Ryan didn't have any black soldiers in it. That's because the movie was not focusing on a black battalion. Movies cannot be asked to be fully representative - they'd be twelve hours long. On the historical accuracy point I am somewhat more in line, but I also understand the rewriting that occurs for dramatic effect. 'Gladiator' apparantly, was full of inaccuracy - but I loved it; it was a terrific film. I did not, however, leave the theatre convinced that it was factual. Let's not forget that novels (and some badly written histories) have played with the truth for centuries. We just need to look at these films for what they are: Entertainment. If the subject interests you - read about it, and discover the details. GAFF
  18. Welcome Gunther. Pretty cool for a demo, eh? GAFF
  19. Was on the john for about two hours last night due to some questionable chili. Sure could have used that manual. GAFF
  20. That sounds like a gem, Fred. I'll try to find a copy. GAFF
  21. Babra - That signature made me reel with laughter (despite the fact that I'm at work on a Sunday morning). Very nice. A fellow Canuck - GAFF
  22. I'll watch for that Scott. Another point: Hot mail has a 2000k limit, so ten average turns will fill it
  23. Panzershark: I'm right there with you as far as X-Com goes. The original is still a great game, and it still resides on my hard drive.
