  11. It grabs you doesn't it. Tonight I had what was probably the best game of CM I have ever played. The scenario was gold Chance Encounter with axis +100%, I was playing as allies. This game basically had me on the edge of my seat for about an hour with about 5 or 6 German assaults on the allied held church. By the time I first moved into the church with 1 platoon all 6 Stugs had been knocked out for the loss of 2 Shermans (lucky). The first german attack on the church happened about then, it was pretty small and was easily repulsed. The second assault was another matter with fierce hand to hand combat occurring inside the church, this attack was only repulsed when 1 of my surviving tanks made a mad dash down the road, through the town and on to the Victory location near the church to offer fire support. The third German assault and again they make it into the church. This time the reinforcement platoon makes it onto the scene and they force the Germans back again wiping out a German company hq (actually inside the church) in the process. The fourth assault was the last one to truly push the allied defenders and when the Germans withdrew they left the remains of one of their Battalion HQ's on the field. The last couple of assaults were pretty half hearted affairs made by troops that had already been chewed up in earlier attacks. In the end of the approximately 250 Germans who participated in the assaults on the church 192 of them became casualties. The allied defence totaled 82 men and 1 tank of these the tank escaped unscathed, although it had a number of near misses from panzerschrecks and panzerfausts, and the infantry suffered 46 casualties. I took one screenshot of the approaches of the church at the end of the battle the number of German dead in that shot alone totaled 110. This engagement makes me believe the AI doesn't need any tweaking to portray Russian attacks .
  12. WOW great, loved the massed US artillery, and the Brits advancing down the misty road, oh and the halftrack towing the AT gun. This is going to be so much fun when I finally get my hands on the full version (sometime before christmas ) ------------------ IN VINO VERITAS
  13. BooHoo, I have to wait for CM3 to do the scenarios I am currently researching. ------------------ IN VINO VERITAS
  14. Good job Lindan. That night has already entered the realm of CM mythology. I can see myself telling my grandchildren about the infamous night of the CM1 gold demo release and how in our religous fervour and ecstasy we Crashed the server. Hallelujah Praise the Demo.
  15. OK.. Just finished my first game of Valley (as Americans). That was an intense 2 hours I hate 75mm Pillboxes! The Bastard knocked out 3 of my 6 tanks (and I still didn't knock it out, the crew decided to do a runner) , 2 others went to the Panther which left one little '105' to last out the game. Don't think the allies lost though. Early in the scenario I had one of my 81's set up a smoke screen on the hill directly in front of the allied center and charged my engineer platoon into the town forcing the Germans there to retreat. This action also drew most of the German infantry from the allied right into counterattacking the town and getting chewed up by my engineers (engineers suffered about 70% casualties in all this). Also during this Arty knocked out the German field gun. I now sent two platoons down the right flank, one squad lost 5 men to mines the rest crushed the German left and took hill 219? The wooden bunker on the German left being taken out by a bazooka (great to watch). The platoon on my left also pushed forward and pinned the German troops there. I never managed to destroy the Panther, although I had a bazooka team (same as took out the bunker) moving into a firing position behind it when the Germans surrendered on turn 30. Allied minor victory score 62. To sum up what won the game for me was Arty and Infantry (to be more specific the Engineers won the game for me), all the armour did was to knock out the mg pillbox and encourage the 75mm crew to run with all the non-penetrating hits. 16. Last I remember hearing the Avre wasn't in, glad thats changed.
  17. The question is, is it worth hanging around? I mean will the demo be out in 10 minutes or in 23 hours and 10 minutes? P.S.- Read what Fionn wrote at the end of the BTS thread about Beta Demo, very funny.
  18. Kitchen sink and Lavatory units are overrated. The true King of battle, the most feared weapon in the history of WWII has to have been the Frech Army Mobile Brothel units. Whenever these units were sent to the front German troops opposite them would drop their weapons and approach at the salute, only to find to their horror that the F.A.M.B. was manned by men and not women. Historical records show that 50% of the Germans confronted with this horrendous fact would immediately surrender ( some even today are still recieving psychological treatment for their trauma) , the other 50% would commit suicide. The only drawback of this weapon was that it could not be deployed in the vicinity of English troops. On all the occasions when this was done the French Army Mobile Brothel units were overrun by members of the English officer/ruling class wanting a good rogering. ------------------ IN VINO VERITAS
  19. Gladiator was a good movie, however I have a few nitpicks with the initial battle. Firstly it was my understanding that the pilum was a missile weapon, used to render the enemies' shields useless, why do they carry it into the melee with the Germans. Secondly the legionaires primary weapon the gladius was a short thrusting sword used with an underhand thrust, not the Errol Flynn sword fight shown. Thirdly, might be wrong on this have to watch the movie again to check, I thought I saw stirrups on the cavalry in the initial battle. The one other point I want to bring up is what happened to the 12 years of Commodus' reign, according to the movie he seems to have become emperor and died within about a year. ------------------ IN VINO VERITAS
  20. Posted by von Lucke ***The "story" (mostly stock WWII reel footage spliced with a couple of set-piece battle scenes) revolves around M4A2 tank commander SSG Sullivan (a cowboy-boot wearin', six-gun totin', Texas-drawl/Irish brogue sportin' hard-ass) and his multi-national crew (Polish assistant driver, Italian loader, German gunner, alcoholic driver).*** Hey von Lucke I come from the great nation of Alcohol too! 21. It is my understanding that in either 42 or 43 there was a firefight between US and Australian troops at a Brisbane train station. Read this a long time ago and cannot remember where it came from but it sorta stuck in my mind.
