1. I run everything in 16-bit. Most games are only coded for 16-bit, the voodoo cards only support 16-bit, and there's less of a performance hit in 16-bit. And frankly, I could care less if I see 75 different shades of puce, as opposed to only 40.
2.
quote:
Originally posted by Törni: Bazooka crews should have pistols or carbines.

They do. And if they live long enough (the crucial point in this statement), they'll use them to defend themselves.
3. Wasn't it Colonel Mustard, in the Library, with a Candelstick?
4. Looks like the usual outcome. The Germans don' need no stinkin' StuGs to severely trounce the Ami's in CE. Well done. Now try it against a human ...
5. Ya, I've noticed a rather annoying tendency for German HT/AC crews to abandon ship at the slightest provocation. Allied crews are only slightly better --- which isn't saying much.
6. I've always looked on the Tiger I as the acme in pre-war panzer design. It's a MkIII taken as far as it could go. The Panther (and later designs) are just T-34 hibrids mutated with a heavy dose of German engineering.
7. IW: Yes, but since the 37mm gun and .30cal MG's have been removed, the storage space for all that ammo should be freed up for some .50cal --- more than the single can it seems to be equiped with. Dalem: Yr last sentence is exactly the reason behind my original post. A range of 400m seems way too limited.
8. You do know that when setting up a Quick Battle, you can buy any of the Allied units by clicking on the "Force" button? Just add a regular infantry Vickers to your airborne mix...
9. Dalem: Agree with yr first and last statements: Yah, a tripod mount, sunk into the ground and braced by three men, would be very stable --- that's why it's range is over twice that of the vehicle mounts. And the column mount of the jeep vibrates like a jack-hammer. But I would disagree that a 360 ring mount is any more stable than a fixed mount attached to the open turret-ring of a light tank. In any case, the mount for all these vehicles is simply listed as "flexible". As to sights, they were all open iron sights. (Only optical sight I've seen on a .50 was on a Barret --- would be useless on a HMG). Madmatt...? [This message has been edited by von Lucke (edited 07-14-2000).]

11. Sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion --- I just wouldn't give too much credence to anyone that prefered Risk to CM...
12. According to the CM in-game info on all three vehicles, the 50cal is a on a "flexible mount", which I take to mean as an exterior pintle. The graphic also shows the .50 as being mounted up top.
13. Well you've done it now! I'm forced to break out the secret weapon: We've had translators working, in joke-proof conditions, to try and translate a German version of the funniest joke in the world. They worked on one word each for greater safety. One of them saw two words of the joke, and spent several weeks in hospital. Ready... Tell joke! "Wenn ist das Nunstruck git un Slotermeyer? Ja!... Beiherhund das Oder die Flipperwaldt gersput!"
14. Did a QB and decided to throw in a T8 Recon Vehicle for the Amis --- hey, it's cheap and has decent armor (being a modified Stuart), and it's quick. Seemed a good choice --- until I tried to lay into Gerry, and found that the max range on the .50cal is only 400m! So I decided to check out the other American vehicles that mount the .50cal as their only armament, and here's the skinny: Inf Crewed .50cal HMG: 2500m (baseline) M3a1 Scout Car: 1000m M3a1 Half-Track: 1000m M20 Scout Car: 1000m T8 Recon Vehicle: 400m MG Jeep: 400m Supposedly the M20, M3a1, and T8 all have the same M2B .50cal? Same mount (according to in-game info). I'm assuming all have the same open sights? Why, then, the terrific range discrepancy? Also curious as to why the T8 carries only 25 "shots" when the M20 has 40, and the M3a1 150. I'm not too familiar with the T8, but being a Stuart (which carries 250 "shots" for it's MGs, by the way) sans turret, I would think it's ammo capacity would be higher (at least more than a jeep!). 15. OK --- I just gotta ask: What the hell are you up to BH? Planning on making a human sacrifice to the gods of CM?
16. At present (v1.01) there are three solutions: Target an Ambush Marker. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn't. The ambush marker works like a trigger switch, telling the targeting unit it's OK to shoot now --- unfortunately, the target that gets shot at isn't nescessarily the one that is rolling through the ambush marker. I've seen ambushers fire on units 90 degrees to the intended ambushee! Area Fire in the direction you expect an approach from. Again, this sometimes works (if you've got the ammo to waste), but it also sometimes disuades your intended victim from approaching at all. Hide. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but I've found that 'hiding' AFV's will ignore a lot of petty targets, but let loose on the real threats. Only thing that can be done is tweak the TacAI a bit more (ala v1.03), and see what happens. [This message has been edited by von Lucke (edited 07-14-2000).]
17. Set up a QB just yesterday with an einsatz Kampfgruppe consisting of a Panther G / Tiger I / Jagd IV/70 / Nashorn / Lynx, backed up by an Ostwind and Wirbelwind. Gave the Allies 3 times as many tanks (mostly with 76mm or better guns), a few PIAT teams, and 5 Jabos (3 Reg & 2 Vet). I did see both the Tiger and Lynx fire on Jabos --- they tracked 'em when within a few hundred meters, and fired MG rounds in the air (since it was at 90 degrees, couldn't have been anything else). Outcome: The SPAA was suprisingly effective in keeping the jabo's off my back --- they even shot down 1 plane! --- several attack runs where broken off, and only one tank was lost due to rockets (the Nashorn). Ended up with only the Ostwind left alive at the end --- but all the Allied armor was toast!
18. Have to be the Panther --- the very form and function of a tank: So sleek, so virile, so ubermenschen!
19. The item I'm still wondering about is why does a 'Super' Pershing cost less than a 'Regular' Pershing? (The kryptonite shot-trap, perhaps?) Yah, the Churchill VIII's can be a boon or a bitch, depending on which side yr on. If yr lucky enough to get a few HEAT rounds with the Inf Support 95mm, it more than makes up for it's slow speed. And speaking of speed --- that's all that ever keeps my Stuarts alive! Just use 'em like their namesake would: Drive like hell, and hit-and-run (preferably from the rear!).

21. What, nobody here has read Castle Keep by William Eastlake? It's December 1944, and a detachment of GI's are sent to Belgium to guard an ancient castle full of art treasures --- unfortunately, it's right in the path of the German "Bulge" offensive! The book is kind of an anti-war satire along the lines of Catch-22, and is full of memorably strange characters: The one-eyed Amer-indian Major who leads his men into combat on horseback, and the mechanic who falls in love with a VW beetle, and the baker who decides to quit the war and just make fresh bread... And for those of you who don't have time to read, I think it also came out as a movie back in 1969, with Burt Lancaster and Peter Falk.
