  1. Peter makes some good points. The forum does lead to a belief at times that "we are all in this together." One group instead of a business and then a group of customers. Most customers (notice I said most - I have worked retail!) would not come unglued in a store like they might here. And if they did, we had the police/security escort them from the premises. That being said, if any of us came close to saying what BFC says to people here, we would be fired so fast it would make our heads spin. We weren't owners, but even the owners I've worked with or for are far more circumspect in person. BFC offers a product that is impossible to replace. That makes them and this forum unique. They have the right to say what they want but consequences might follow. I do think that BFC has made it clear what they think about that. It's their forum, they can do what they want and how they want. Freedom of owning the business.
  2. We will be able to command elite squads of Hampsterstruppen, right? I mean, of course, the modern Stryker equivalent, of course.
  3. Nice recap. I would rather have a cold root beer. (I know that no one finds my jokes funny, but...)
  4. I guess this will be seen as a sycophanitic post, but I'm looking forward to this one.
  5. Hey, this game has been announced for a few hours already. Where are all the padlocked threads? Are we losing our touch? Besides, if this game doesn't have the Uber Finn/Canadian/Guatemalan outfit, how can anyone care?
  6. Okay, I'm just sick of people. I don't like to get bogged down in details. When I was a sales clerk at Games N Gadgets (original ebgames) one Vietnam vet unloaded all over me for the early MicroProse Conflict Vietnam (or whatever it was called) back in the '80s. He didn't mind the WWII games, that was fine, but people died in Vietnam! I understood what he meant, the war in Vietnam was real to him whereas WWII wasn't. (His wife was mortified and kept trying to get him to calm down.) Some topics are sensitive to some people. No big deal, but those who are damning the games just because they don't like it are annoying. Hey, am I being annoying yet? And who can I apologize for? Can I apologize for all the WWII enthusiasts who aren't complaining?
  7. I have no imagination or sense of political irony. I'll have Sadler's Ballad of the Green Berets jamming. <G> edited for spellink
  8. This whole WWII/Modern/Future debate simply reminds me of the old wargame board game community. It seemed like there would be a flood of WWII west front, or east front, or Fulda Gap or something. Everyone would jump on the bandwagon and then someone would do an ACW game and that would become the rage. Personally, I like a good variety. I wish the engine would be adapted for many many different periods. I wish I could program and make games but I can't so keep 'em coming BFC.
  9. I think that the cesspool has backed up again!
  10. In theory a country like Vietnam should not have been much more than a speedbump to the United States. France one would have expected to last longer than it did in WWII, and so on and so forth. Just because in a strategic situation one side shouldn't do well doesn't mean that on any given day at any given crossroads, the strategically weaker opponent will be inferior or fail. All of the combat vets I know point out how when the shooting starts up close and personal, it is you and your buddies trying to stay alive. I just don't buy the Syria presents no challenge arguments as a reason why the game shouldn't be made.
  11. I liked the book First Clash: Combat Close-Up in World War III, by Kenneth Macksey. It was a kind of primer/choose your path adventure book using Canadian Forces in Germany. I think the engine would be great for things like the ideas in the book. Tactical exercises. Play around and have some fun.
  12. I will probably be accused of being a sycophant, but I don't understand the furor. BFC as a company, IMHO, is supposed to turn out a good product. So far they have been great. If I as a consumer don't like the idea behind the product I don't buy it. If I like it, I buy it. End of story. The product should do what it is promised to do. [Edit for clarification] As long as the product satisfies that requirement, the deal is done. Some people are acting like they have already paid BFC for the game and have been lied to about what it was. That would infuriate me as well, but no money has changed hands. No product has been sold. No contract has been breached. I really get annoyed at the foolish "poor non-Americans" garbage. Hell, I'm not American but it doesn't bother me if Americans make games that involves the U.S. Or, for that matter, if it doesn't involve the U.S. That's the artist's decision. I remember the complaints about Saving Private Ryan not including the rest of the DDay nations. It wasn't about all of DDay, it was about one group. If the Longest Day had been all American, that would have been quite different. But why is it that the United States is supposed (actually, people in the U.S.) to make games/products for every body on the planet? Why can't Finns make wargames? Brits? Germans, etc? I know that they do, but why the whining about it. As far as I'm concerned, as long as Texas and Alberta are center stage, everything is great! I respect anyone who has a moral objection to the game and decides not to purchase it. Doesn't throw a temper tantrum, but just says his/her piece and moves on. More power to them. That being said, I'm sorry that I can't remember who coined it, but what is the difference between Getting More Oven Victims and If this is Poland it Must be Another Glorious Day in the Worker's Paradise, etc. I don't know if I will buy the game or not, although I probably will. I would love it if the engine can be used to allow us to recreate small battles using different countries. Like Canada, Britain, NZ, Mexico, etc. But for some strange reason, I don't see BFC as owing *me* exactly what I want every single time. I guess I need help.
  13. Wow, you drop by the old neighborhood and find out that it wasn't a party the night before. Good luck with the game guys. I always thought that part of the joy of having your own business was to do what you wanted to do. I'll be following the games with interest. Oh, I'm sorry. I meant down with the infidel invaders and up with the (insert your favorite group here>). edit for accidently using ubb code apparently.
  14. I'm looking forward to this one as well.
  15. I'm still here. I think. Maybe not. I also got "reborn" when the system crashed. I thought I was going to be the very first person to post on the fixed boards: wrong! Had to re-up.
  16. I'm looking forward to it. It will be interesting to see how the equipment/tactics fare with such a diverse set of battlefields to deal with.
  17. One of my favorite board games was SPI's World War 3. I would love to see a game similar to that. I prefer global scale games, but SC would be good to move to a modern setting. I like the old NATO/WP setting, but there are a lot of possibilites.
  18. I would like to point out that out of all the forums here at Battlefront, it is the SC forum that seems to have most of the problems. (Not pointing fingers at anyone). I know both the Matrix and Paradox forums and I would put BFC with both of them for usefulness and demeanor. [And they are both very good forums. (Ignoring the general forums for all three). I'm sure a lot of people don't come back to SC too often based on all the noise. [ December 22, 2002, 10:35 PM: Message edited by: Darren J Pierson ]
  19. I have to give GameSpot credit. They usually take a good hard look at major games. IMHO, when GameSpot takes notice of a game from an online only publisher, it makes people take notice. I know I have purchased some online only published games due to their reviews. I don't like their main emphasis on action games, but they seem to be fair.
  20. Apology accepted. No hard feelings. I really don't think that you should feel like you have to drop the subject. BTS will comment eventually. Persistence is a very good thing. Just keep it civil and things will go very well. I'm sure that the issue will be discussed eventually.
