  1. You can make a nice one yourself: somewhere in the BMP directory is the graphic that shows on the main screen (the one with the four buttons at the bottom). It's the one titled 11002.bmp, and you can find it easily if your sort the directory by size since it's the largest. Drop that bmp onto any program which prints CD stuff and you're done.
  2. GIMME!!!!! Um, well, I, er, I kinda like the green winter version.
  3. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Lets start with, BTS would have lost about say 20% of its customers. Not very many but a good chunk. <hr></blockquote> Yeah, but without CM Apple would've lost what, 75% of their customers?
  4. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> What about renting it by the hour? Is that ok? <hr></blockquote>  Oh, great. So I find this out after I'm married, and it's not even mine any more. You know how that goes -- they don't like you playing games with your unit, esp. not a QuickieBattle.  (And yes, I'm leaving the gutter now before it carries me off to the CessPool....)
  5. My mother told me to never sell my unit.
  6. (Bah, humbug! The real Santa would've said all known purchasers of CMBO would wake up Christmas morning to find CMBB in their mailbox.)
  7. How about different configurations for movies and order phases? In other words, when I'm giving orders, I wanna see unit bases, no tree cover, no roofs, etc. But when I'm watching the movie, it'd be nice if CM automatically toggled those so that it'd look more realistic.... So, rather than have the hotkeys used to create one global config -- have one config for movies and another for orders phases. If I toggle trees off while giving orders, then don't show me trees in that phase; if I toggle trees on while watching a movie, don't show me trees during movies.... (In other words, this shouldn't require any interface changes.)
  8. is right! Now that you've got a terrific "factory-fresh" jeep, maybe you could put a little dirt and wear on it? Oh, and you've got some "pinkies" on it....
  9. I think it was in one of the previews or something, but I thought I'd read that CMBB was in fact going to work more or less the way Fuerte describes it. Maybe MadMatt or somebody could put this discussion to rest so that we don't spend our time designing a solution for something which has already been addressed.
  10. Ah, but what's problematic about this is the constant starting/stopping of CM -- unless you'd spawn a copy of CM for each and every turn..... There's a better way, and I've started on a proposal for BTS but haven't worked on it in awhile -- just not sure how receptive they'd be.....

  12. No mystery there -- check his profile and you'll see that he's been registered for a long time....
  13. I like the use of the bar graph to convey ammo status in the infantry screenshot; however, this same device isn't used for armour according to the armor screenshot. Was this a conscious decision or an oversight?
  14. Anyone? This problem prevents at least 4 people from playing via IP; I realize that's like 0.0003% of the CM community....
  15. Well, I can't help you, but I can say that I and the other two people I play CM with have the same problem. No matter which one of us tries to host and which tries to connect, we always get the results you describe. We had IP working perhaps a couple of months ago but since then had played PBEM only. We thought we'd start using IP again but have not been able to get it to work. We think we've ruled out the usual suspects (firewalls, routers, other network-related software, etc.) In fact, we even tried physically direct-connecting two systems and couldn't get that to work either. All of us are at 1.12, but we just tonight tried 1.1; same results.
  16. No -- you can't toggle it. (And, speaking as a programmer, I'm not sure you could even hack it in; while it would be possible to have a keystroke to act as a toggle, I think the textures are loaded by CM when it starts the scenario.) So, it's like any other gridded terrain -- a set of texture bitmaps that you place in the CM BMP directory. The only thing that's different is that you don't have to spend hours in a paint program getting your grid dialed in. You create your gridded terrain by feeding my utility a lot of parameters which specify the thickness of the lines, the transparency level, and colors (including whether they vary by height). As I said, though, it's difficult to use and I don't have time to put a user interface on it. I only mentioned it because I thought BTS might wanna think about some of these things if they embrace the idea of a hotkey to toggle grids. [ 04-22-2001: Message edited by: sbg2112 ]
  17. well, for what it's worth, here's the grids I use; they were generated by a Java utility I wrote. Sample Grid They are quite subtle and I really like 'em. They have major and minor grids, which is something BTS should consider if they add a hotkey to show grids..... (I never published the utility cause it's a pain to use....) 18. It'll be interesting to see if anyone thinks one mouse design would be better than others....and in the end, it's gonna be such a subjective thing.... But don't forget about other options -- trackball (already mentioned), trackpoint, or maybe not even using a mouse at all. Not as intuitive, but it seems like you could navigate CM pretty well with just the keyboard..... Maybe somebody could tie a voice recognition engine into CM so you could say things like "Sgt. Williams, move 30 meters northeast." (Would probly work best complemented by tacAI changes to choose the best waypoints....but that's a whole 'nother topic.)
  19. I recently posted mentioning that I had "ported" the unit db to the ThinkDB format so that I can browse it on my Palm PDA. (Not much of a port: couple of minor PDA-specific tweaks, export to CSV, and import that to ThinkDB.) As geeky as it sounds, it nevertheless has been an interesting and useful way to study CM for those all-too-frequent times when life keeps you away from it. However, one thing that really struck me about the unit db is just how much information is in there. A spreadsheet is okay, but I wonder if it shouldn't be made into a true relational db? (Not that I have 1/252th the time required to design the DB or enter / migrate the data.) This could be sliced and diced in many different ways, and hopefully served up in a variety of formats (HTML, spreadsheet, etc.) Oh, one of the things I would especially like to see is a tactics entry for each unit -- basically, what http://www.combat-missions.net/ has....
  20. Yes, yes yes! I've been asking / clamoring / begging for something like this for a long time now. But it might be a good idea to put it through a few test runs before setting up a forum. Maybe you could use the CM Tactics forum for a trial run.....
  21. Who, me? Just trying to find a way to contribute to the CM community. Guess you got the wrong impression -- it didn't take much time to port it over, so what the heck. I got the idea after coming across "The Art of War" in Palm DOC format, and I've got a few other ideas for CM-related things on the Palm....
  22. First off, let me just say that I do not have a way of playing CM on PDAs / organizers / PalmPilots / whatever-you-wanna-call-these-thingies. Still here? I've managed to "port" the vehicles segment of the unit db that somebody else created (and needs to update, I believe). It's in ThinkDB format (see thinkingbytes.com for the free ThinkDB app). I've only just got it ported and haven't had a chance to create any fancy views or anything, but I'm looking forward to being able to refer to it when discussing the latest AAR with my friends. It should also satisfy my CM cravings when they come up during insufferable meetings at work. So, anybody interested in such a thing? Lemme know and I'll try to find somebody to host it (after I convert the other portions of the unit db).
  23. I remember vividly what hooked me -- the first time my units made contact and suddenly there were tracers whizzing, mortars popping, and tanks booming. In other words, it was the chaos and "violence" of battle. Sure, I love it for the mental workout I get trying to apply tactics to situations, but it's the realism of the battle itself that keeps me coming back. Of course, having played for so long, I've seen a few things that have taken the lustre off a bit, but I take comfort in how good it is overall, and how good it will surely be by the time BTS gets to CM XXIV. Oh, and one other thing. I love it because it has directly and indirectly taught me so much about the momentous struggle that was WWII. And will continue to do so -- I wonder how much CM2 is going to teach Americans like me who've never learned much about the war beyond what happened in Europe and to a lesser extent, the Pacific and Far East.
  24. Okay. Now that we have the first "photo-realistic" vehicle, we need some modder(s) to get busy on the rest. 1 down, 200 or so to go, so start moddin'. Anybody playing with this mod yet? I'm almost afraid to download it for fear that it just won't fit in....
