  1. Er...appendectomies and tonsillectomies...ah, nevermind Actually, the West Wall one was good, IMHO. First one I played. I'd recommend it for starters. Preacher
  2. Er...saw the word "church" and felt compelled to chime in... Preacher
  3. Playing with MDMP-1 (patched sounds) and all is well. In fact, it is splendid. The sounds in particular are awesome. No PBeM problems, either. Preacher
  4. Actually, Marcus, I would venture to say that it matters much more for those Grandmasters. If you or i make a mistake playing black, we can often recover. Those guys, on other hand, cannot recover as easily. By default, Black begins the game behind in momentum (tempo). Any mistake increases White's advantage significantly (the opposite situation - White making a mistake - generally neutralizes the inherent advantage of playing White. Less dramatic than a Black mistake). Give a GM a tempo or 2 and the game is over. For this reason - among GMs especially - Black requires much more careful (and often subtle) play. IMHO. Preacher
  5. Re: the chess statement... Actually, chess plays quite differently depending upon which side one "chooses." So, I must respectfully disagree and say, yes, it does matter if one chooses white or black. FWIW, Preacher
  6. Well..installed and running for now. Had to do a manual install, however (??) Still would like to know why it wouldn't reinstall "from scratch." Preacher
  7. Well, i uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I reinstalled the 1.01 patch as well. Now the game will not run at all. I keep getting unhandled exceptions and page faults with combat mission.exe. I have had the game since Monday and it has performed flawlessly until now. I can't even uninstall it now because it won't let me. And, when i CAN get it to reinstall (again), it defaults to C:\Windows instead of C:\Program Files\Cmbo. Will not let me change it either ?? Please help Preacher
  8. Thanks, guys. Looks like MDMP-1 may be the problem. I'll reinstall CM to get rid of it and then see if it stabilizes. Preacher
  9. I have experienced my first CTD with CM. I set up a test scenario in order to test Fighter-Bombers and American 240mm arty (heee). Each time i went through the "scenario," it crashed at about the same place. Right as a 240mm shell hit the earth i got a Windows error beep and BAM - teh game locked for 5 sec or so then crashed to desktop with the following message: DDHELP caused an invalid page fault in module DSOUND.DLL at 015f:beb14908. Registers: EAX=25ef1faa CS=015f EIP=beb14908 EFLGS=00010202 EBX=83fd1834 SS=0167 ESP=00bffee4 EBP=00bfff04 ECX=843d100c DS=0167 ESI=83fd1b1c FS=3dd7 EDX=00bfff00 ES=0167 EDI=00000001 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: ff 90 80 00 00 00 c2 08 00 8b 49 18 ff 74 24 04 Stack dump: 00000001 00bfff00 beb14382 00000001 00bfff00 83fd1b1c 83fd1b1c 00000001 00bfff40 beb14333 00000001 83bd124c beb11121 00000000 83bd10c8 83bd105c I have a p3-600, 128meg, Elsa Erazor X (SDR), Vortex sq2500 sound, DX 7.0a Oh, i also continue to hear the last sound from the game when back in Windows (IOW, i am listening now to the hum of Panther and Tiger engines). Can't turn it off without a full reboot. Preacher
  10. ...and one more thing... Most assault guns are non-turreted. This means that a blown track (or any other immobilization) SEVERELY restricts firing arc. Food for thought.. Preacher
  11. In my experience with CM, crew experience makes the biggest difference. Mobility effectively enhances protection. Lack of mobility greatly reduces that protection (and the crews know it). Unless they are quite safe (hull down, defilade, etc), not many crews are going to stay in an immob'ed tank. Maybe that elite/heroic crew will...good luck in finding one of those Preacher
  12. quote from Spelling Bee - ...comlains about spelling Assuming that "comlains" is a typo...and... quote - ...without the hypen Ditto Sorry, but i couldn't resist. Happened to me once a long, long time ago on this board. Preacher
  13. That was kind of insensitive, i guess. Please forgive me Preacher
  14. Do send, please regray@mindspring.com Thanks, Preacher
  15. Never played vs a human. Been playing since the millisecond that the beta demo came out I still suck, mind you. Will play any scenario/any side. Prefer default setups and blind game (new, unplayed scenario - should be easy). Patched to 1.01. Please email at regray@mindspring.com Preacher
  16. Yes. You are plotting everything. Movement orders, targeting orders, artillery calls, etc. And all in varying degrees... Preacher
  17. There are several "Operations" that consist of 3-9 battles (editor allows creation of operations that last up to 20 battles). Losses carry over from battle to battle. Front lines are determined. Units can be isolated. Vehicles can sometimes be recovered/repaired. Etc, etc. So, in effect, yes - there is a "campaign" feature. Preacher
  18. I actually had this sick feeling that I would be the one guy who got the poster and not the game. Glad it wasn't so... Preacher
  19. It has hit the Atlanta area. I preordered back in October. Poster didn't arrive, but game did Preacher
  20. The game was shipped USPS, not UPS. Just a friendly reminder Preacher
  21. The wife and I just returned from spending a few days in New Orleans. We were privileged to be able to enjoy many of the festivities surrounding the grand opening of the National D-Day Museum. I cannot begin to describe how incredible it was to rub shoulders with thousands (yes, thousands) of WWII veterans. It was truly wonderful seeing those sweet, stooped old men shed tears as thousands and thousands of people thanked them for the work they did almost 60 years ago. It was truly an unbelievable experience. And the museum is awesome, too. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. God bless America! Preacher
  22. Funny story about this... Was driving down I-20 (through Atlanta). After passing through town I saw a sign on the inner median that said 'AFV lane.' Being an avid wargamer, particularly ASL, I slowed down so as to be able to catch a glimpse of some sure-to-be-seen tanks in the far left lane. Much to my chagrin, however, my brother (who does not know what AFV REALLY means ) informed me that AFV stood for 'Alternate Fuel Vehicle.' Harumph. Oh well.... Preacher
  23. Touche, 'grammatical [sic] incorrect.' Preacher
