  1. I DID A SEARCH!!!!! No help. So here is the deal... I installed DX 7.0 from my computer builders website. I go to play the CM demo and there is a very annoying flicker around the trees and the sky is purple!!! Any ideas????
  2. Mark IV is right. Trotter has an artical on this subject in the June 2000 PC Gamer.
  3. I think meathod 1 would cause a HUGE slowdown. Think about it: Every round in CM that you see during a normal turn. Every pixel that a round travels the computer would have to stop and check to see if that round is contacting some other objet in the game. Every round, every pixel. Plus...LOS calculations, the three levels of AI, graphics....sounds....all this in the 4000 X 3000 meter area we could have on a map. The math gets REALLY BIG....REALLY FAST.
  4. WOW....I had another first 5 minutes ago in the beta demo and I wanna share. Riesberg battle and I'm the Germans. I have a SMG squad in one of the two wooden houses next to the church. A sherman comes around the corner and the SMG squad lets go with a panzerfaust and nails the sherman.....but the back blast of the PF catches the house on fire!!!!! The SMG runs like hell outa there (only lost one guy to the fire). I have had the beta demo since Nov or Dec and this is a first...COOL!!!!!!!!!!
  5. If Combat Mission will be done at the end of May......can we expect to be able to download the demo about mid-May????
  6. A butterfly in France flutters its wings...the displaced air is heated by a ray of sunlight through the trees...the air rises and contributes just enough energy to brew a storm.....which causes the B-29 or B-17 to take a 35 degree turn to avoid the cell on the way to bomb Berlin with the A-Bomb....which causes the navigator to make a stupid error and miscalculate where he is....which causes the A-Bomb to be dropped on the wrong city......which just happened to be where Patton was!!!! WHOOOOOSHHHH!!!!! The whole war has changed!!!!! My point is...........anything can happen.....and nobody can say what would happen.
  7. I can testify to the absolute MESS a little bird can make on an aircraft. A year and a half ago I was flying a 29 seat turbo-prop out of a small airport called State College in PA. I was about 3/4 the way down the runway on takeoff (hot and heavy) and I went right through a gaggle of small birds (sparrow size). One hit my First Officers window and COMPLETELY splattered and blocked ALL vision out that window. Another one hit my window (left side) and almost completely blocked my vision. Another five or six went into my left engine. I was in the process of rotating so I did not abort. The left enigine started to smoke and make a high pitched whining noise (the compressor was bent up really bad) but it did not quit (say what you will about Garrett Enigines but that baby ate a whole Thanksgiving dinner and kept on kicking!). The one thing that really surprised me however was the BOOM of impact when that little bird hit the window. It was like a rifle shot. Also....the amazing variety of colors the inards of a bird displays upon close inspection. Green, purple, yellow, and red. I had to look through that mess to land!!!!
  8. Steve, Thanks for the logical explanation of what happened with the PF. That is what I was looking for. As far as "throwing the baby out with the bathwater", I called the thread "I love CM....but hate it when...." because I, in no way, think that CM is destroyed by this abstraction. I guess I should have used the word baffeled instead of mad in my original post. Your explanation of the reason why we see what we see makes perfect sense now. The PF was calculated to miss the tank, no matter what tank it was. If it had been a Stug size tank with a lower "graphical representation" then the PF would not have touched the graphic. End result: Still a miss. Ahhhh...I get it. Back to bliss.....and the big calander next to my puter countin' down the days...... Lanzfeld
  9. No....I dont think I am expressing my problem very well. I'm not upset that the faust missed....I'm mad because the actual graphic of the faust HIT the turret and went through it and landed on the other side in a harmlesss explosion. You see what I'm saying? Like the turret was a ghost that the faust passed through.......
  10. I had the most enjoyable beta demo game of CM in my life this morning. I was the Germans in Riesberg and I tried some new tactics. What a blast! I had a sherman run right past a hidden SMG squad and didnt see them (Sherman was buttoned). The SMG squad fired a panzerfaust at a range of about 50m. I froze the playback at that moment while the panzerfaust was in the air. It was perfect! I lined up the camera and saw that the Faust was going to hit the turret. Okay...play! I was right!!!! It hit the turret and went right through!!! Miss?!?!?! YUP. UGGGGGGG!!! I know that the graphical representation of the tank doesnt really show where the tank is but that was a letdown. And yes...I had realistic size on. I thought I read that one of the selling points of the 3D battlefield was that if part of a tank was exposed around a building or such...you could hit it?? Not true in the example above. Bummer. What I am wondering is at what point is a tank exposed? Is it like the "HULL DOWN" meathod? The tank is or it is not hulldown, there is no in between. Am I making sense here? Are there points on the tank that must be exposed for me to hit it?...or if I can see part of it..I can hit it.(??)
  11. Well.......at least you answered me... Thanks
  12. Any more news when this will start????
  13. Any idea how much longer on this???
  14. Yeah I noticed this too. In CE when one of my MG42 crews just stay put and target a buttoned sherman. Gee...what a great way to draw HE shells. This is NOT realistic to me. Sometimes I get lucky and this happens near the end of a turn so I can Withdraw them at the start of the next turn. Sometimes not. All I know is.....HE shells start to land on me and my crew??? Time to go.
  15. The speed of sound is dependant on temperature as well.
  16. You want picky? I got picky. In the D-day scene after they make it to the seawall Sgt Horvall says that "Dog One" is that cut on the right...or maybe the one on the left. Captain Miller responds that Vierville is to the west and this is Dog One. In reality, Vierville is to the ESE of Dog One. If Vierville was to the west then they were at Dog Three!!!! Hehe.....told ya picky....beat that!!!!!!
  17. It doesnt make sense though....... If a chunk of earth (hill) is between the lower part of my hull and an enemy shell then that shell should hit the earth and not my hull. In the 3D environment, the more of my hull thats blocked by the earth, the more of my hull thats protected. The way Im talking about it...it cant be "all or nothing".......can it???
  18. I think the German Ace sniper was Koenigs.
  19. I'm not 100% sure on this but I think, as far as the first question goes, that because of CM's 3D nature, you can be different degrees of Hull Down. That is to say...your tanks is exposed as much as it is from the view of the enemy. If a slope is blocking 5/6 of your hull then you are 5/6 hull down. If it is blocking 1/3 your hull then you are 1/3 hull down. This is the beauty of 3D. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.
