  1. You know you can turn your monitor to black-and-white by lowering the number of colors that it displays. ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  2. I wanted to know why BTS calls it a "MP44" instead of "StG44". I was playing the game yesterday and I just now noticed that the SS squads carried assault rifles and not a whole bunch of submachineguns (MP40 and MP44 blended together in my mind ). ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  3. The reason is your computer probably doesn't have the power to put out decent images (its like one frame every two or three seconds w/ mine) let alone something like explosions. I cant even see tracers . Just get a faster video card (a faster 3D card doesnt hurt either) and it should work fine.
  4. Wasnt the MP44 supposed to be called the StG 44? I was watching a show on the History Channel and they talked about the evolution of rifles, from medevil times to the future. At first they used the the MP designation to get it past Hitler (because he liked MPs) then when he found out about it, he changed it to the Sturmgewehr '44. I don't know how accurate this is (even though it was off of the History Channel), and I know its a nitpick, but I'm curious to BTS's decisions (even nitpicks like this ) ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. 5. 1LT Apocal of UBG Got my own company too Also while on the topic of women and CoC check this link out: http://hotyellow98.com/amazinamazons/home.html ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. 6. I run CM on a AMD-200 WITHOUT a 3D card at 0.33 fps. It takes me exactly 58 seconds to get from one side of the map to the other. And still I have enough time and patience to check on all my units, every turn. As far as realism, I don't think a company/battalion commander gets nice, detailed overview of how much ammo, casualties, and suppresion every unit has every minute of combat. If you need to justify your having to click on each unit to get a report, pretend like you are making a radio call to the commander of the unit. Obviously you can't talk to two commanders on the radio at once, so you gotta click on every unit to get the report. ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. 7. Then CM should be the greatest game in the world when I finally get a 3D card. Right now im running it on a AMD-200 w/ 32 mb RAM. About .33 FPS most of the time .
  8. Yeah they said that tanks could push disabled vehicles off the road to make way. Even so you might want to have a tank reverse and move around the wreck, its a sitting duck when pushing the wreck to the side. BTW if you should find yourself in a traffic jam under enemy fire, have the vehicle in the very rear reverse, the vehicle in front move fast forward a few meters, and the rest of the vehicles will sort themselves out rather nicely. ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  9. He picks up on stuff pretty quick. My record is now 1-0-13 thanks to some tactics Moon gave me (if you think there is a Panzerschreck ready to ambush, then have the Shermans and infantry spray lead ahead madly, then rush in). But suspiciously enough, I found a copy of the Art of War sitting on his stuff earlier today..... ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  10. Thanks for the info. Now I won't be to inclined to use the leader with ? Gold Boxed as a assault element ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  11. What do those little symbols beside a leader's name mean?
  12. My first MP game of CM, a hotseat game with my brother (not exactly the most military minded person in the world). Reisberg, he is defending. I got my 4 Shermans, lined 'em up, and loaded 'em up. And hit Go. The first turn, he manages to (stupidly enough) leave an 88 in the dead middle of the road. Minus one 88 for him Then I set my platoon of shermans to Move Fast and drive hell-for-leather into the town loaded with infantry. One small problem, my brother has a Panzerschreck team and two squads of infantry on the side of the road. My problem was I didnt see them until they knocked out one of my tanks (damn!). The infantry dismounted safely (well not all of them) and began to exchange fire with the two infantry squads he had positioned nearby. That is until I started shoving 75mm HE shells down their throats I start to move out my tank platoon (minus one tank, and a crewman from another, poor guy was blown outta the hatch from a Panzerfaust) again, while my arty begin hitting the town. Right as my lead Sherman reaches the objective KA-BOOOM. Another Sherman down, this one from the 88 he had in reserve (damn again!). My infantry in the meanwhile were being pinned down by all sorts of MG, mortar, and rifle fire. I had lost my company HQ (damn!) and about a platoon of troops. But I still had two tanks left, one I used to knock down the building HIS company HQ and sharpshooter occupied, killing both instantly, the other to suppress the MG teams he seemed to have positioned everywhere. The main force of my infantry had finally reached the town, but about 25% had become casualties (damn!). I continued to suppress and kill the MG teams with my Sherman when I saw a pyre light up in the town. Oh no, my other Sherman! I forgot to move it (damn!). Right as my remaining infantry began to push into the town he struck again. A building I believed to be secure suddenly came to life from two different directions. One fired a Panzerfaust through the backdoor, knocking out my last Sherman (you know what I am going to say) the other opening up at 20 meters on two infantry squads running towards the building. No more Shermans, no more leaders, no more chance of victory. I wont go into the details of my brother's mop up, because it was exactly that, a mop up. Anybody not already dead was soon to be so and I wound up surrendering my last twenty or so men. A major victory for the Germans, major defeat for me and my ego. NOTE: This game occured about two days ago, my brother has since continued to kick my arse all weekend long. My current record is 0-0-10 [This message has been edited by Apocal (edited 10-31-99).]
  13. Thanks for the info. Took me about 45 minutes of searching to find it though Although I am still completely clueless about the ranks of the Fallschirmjäger. Could any clue me in? ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  14. What are the ranks for the Germans in CM? I tried looking it up on Yahoo! and Lycos but I can't seem to find a site that has them all (Heer, FJ, and SS) and the insignia for them.
  15. My tactics against the AI: Load up all the infantry you possibly can on an M4 Sherman, ride hell for leather towards the objective, while the infantry jump off and mop up. Lost one tank to a Panzerschreck, another I rode off the map accidently (D'oh!) and about 33% of my infantry, including the forward observer of my 105 arty support (damned heckenschutze). I killed most (i think) of the Germans defending the town and got two 88s. Easy as pie.

  17. In reference to the USMC using games for combat, I saw a show on The History Channel about MOUT training, and it showed some Marines playing Quake II as a training tool .
  18. Would you rather they used Quake 2? But the decision probably resulted from the fact its one of the few real-time(there is that profane word again) wargames that deal with infantry combat. I doubt the USMC would pick a turn-based game (no matter how good) to simulate real war. A small unit leadership wargame for the military is no good unless its real time, because real-life is real-time and the enemy isnt going to wait patiently while you compare armor penetration tables (unless they are the Iraqi Army of '91). 19. To answer tgra's original question: I think crack and up troops would be able pull something like that off, even though I wouldn't recommend it. When troops see ambush, they tend to think "oh crap not again" and start to do one of three things: a) Run around that their privates have been shot off. Perform some counter-ambush technique to try and break up the ambush. c) Refer back to A. ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  20. Oh I have about 14 defensives tactics (and like 4 different offensive ones) that I use on a regular basis, ranging from Soviet style "bombard the living crap outta them, and while the arty is still falling move in with tanks" to a more reasoned "bombard the living crap outta them, bombard some more, bombard again, then move in with jeeps cause thats all I could afford after buying arty". Seriously though, I do have a motherlode of tactics, procedures, and doctrines on my computer, the reverse slope ambush family is just is just one of many. To keep this on topic, here is another tactic I use. I call it the Fog of War Ambush. Note: this tactic only works if the game has good fog of war (like CM's fog of war). The best combat conditions to launch it in are woodlands areas at night (or in heavy fog). Get a jeep and a AT gun (perferably the jeep tows the AT gun). Position them in the woods near a road or other chokepoint. When the enemy passes by, ignore the tanks and wait to fire on the half-tracks, jeeps, or other light skinned vehicle pass by, open fire with both the jeep's MG and the AT gun. After you have destroyed a few vehicles, run deeper into the woods and hide. Now the poor sucker on the recieving has just lost between 1-3 vehicles and 5-12 men from (what looked like) a tank firing on his troops. If you were in that situation would YOU follow the tank deeper into the woods? Not if you are experienced, that tank is probably baiting you into a trap! In the mean time you (the ambusher) are giggling your ass off while he (the ambushee) dismounts infantry into the woods to check for the "tank". If you are a REALLY talented commander you can ambush his infantry inside the woods and draw in even more of his infantry (if he actually moves in a tank, you are screwed), thus depriving his tanks of infantry (which is very bad). And for those of you that are taking notes and seeing how I play, be forewarned. I don't fight by my own book. ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. 21. My dear Fionn, that is what they created MASSIVE ARTILLERY BARRAGES for(sorry, I'm just now beginning to get good at HTML). Not to mention the fact that I always have a surprise for the unwary practictioner of flank tactics . ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  22. I have never heard of a person under 28 with FPS motion sickness (the ones older than that I thought were BS'ing me). Even so, thats a pretty strange afflication (but apparently not too rare among wargamers). As someone who has commanded troops (real people, not AI) in a 2D/3D environment (Starsiege: Tribes) I can say that mixing these environments together is really helpful for making command decisions. 3D is good for getting a better feel of the terrain, and 2D is good for keeping track of your men. They both have advantages and disadvantages, but if you use them intelligently the advantages will nullify the the disadvantages.
  23. Hehe. Beware of the hill I hold, for, while it is easily taken, it is not easily escaped. ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter." Sir Winston Churchill
  24. You guys talking about motion sickness while playing FPS are SERIOUS! I honestly thought my parents and older friends were BS'ing me when they said they get sick after playing FPS. I don't know maybe it has something to do with being raised on anime, Nintendo, and cable TV but I have never suffered from motion sickness while using a computer (or even a console system for that matter).
  25. Ill support the campaign idea (thats one more serious player). I don't know if I have the scenario design experience but there would definantly be no problem for me recording and filing AARs for online view (you can check the page I designed at http://underworld.fortunecity.com/monster/68). If need be I'll even form one of the regiments (divisions, clans, whatever), probably one based on the 6th Fallschirmjäger Regiment. ------------------ "Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver.
