Authentic Normandy Landscape Project: Vierville-sur-Mer

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I want to share a map (size: 944x736) that I’ve worked on for quite some time: the vincinty and the town of Vierville-sur-Mer. I used goggle earth, street view and various WW2 maps in order to design the landscape authentically.

There are further ANLP-maps on the way: Dog Green and Dog White sector, Saint-Pierre-du-Mont, Grandcamp and the lower Aure Valley (to name a few).

I hope you enjoy my map and feedback is always welcome!

Regards,

Heckenschütze

Nice looking map. Cant speak for the authenticity tho, since ive never been or even seen photos of the area (that im aware of).

i have to ask tho, did you study photos as well as maps? im wondering since some of the buildings are damaged, and im guessing thats from photos of the area.

Nice map. I have been there but mainly on the beach and the museum. Can you link some historical maps?

One thing you missed are the elevations. There terrain in real is pretty hilly.

Anyways, well done :) and now we need some more background to reincarnate the battle :D

Thank you for your feedback!

@ Oddball_E8: You are right; the damage of the houses is one thing I feel a little uncertain about. I did not find any photo material about the town itself – strange enough. I simply assumed that naval bombardment shelled the city during the naval attacks on Dog Green

Vierville itself wasn’t really defended and the city never saw heavy fighting activity. Reports speak of “only scattered fire from the outskirts” when C Company approached. The only exception was Chateau de Vaumicel, where a German strongpoint was located. After it's capture, the Germans even started a counterattack in Kompanie-Strengh to recapture the Chateau on June 7th.

@ Jaws:

Hmmm, I think this place is not that hilly. The only high ground in the city’s vicinity is where Chateau de Vierville is located. But I will recheck with the contour map at geoportail.fr.

@ permanent666:

Thank you for the advice – will check it out.:)

I am currently working on Dog Green sector. I think it will take me only two more days (in case my girlfriend doesn’t beat the s*it out of me until then;)) until the map’s complete.

Hi dude. I tried a map from Vierville sur Mer until I realized I had to do a map from Vierville _manche-...

The main problem was to find elevations measures. I didnt found them at the french page (they haven't the whole country with such measures) so I take them directly from Google Earth. I take a screenshot from the map, I printed it, I drawn a grid (50 x 50m) and I toke the elevation measuer in every sigle intersection. Then I went to the editor, did a map with similars dimensions as the screenshoot, drawn a grid with "dirt" feature over the green grass and gave the same numbers I had token.

The result was an extremly realistic relief.

I can send you my template with 50m x 50m grid in a 1km x 1 km map
