I got some excellent maps from the US Army, but want a little more detail on the units. Operation Cobra, 25 July 1944. American Unit, 30th Infantry Division, a National Guard Infantry Division, hit hard by American Bombers 2 dyas in a row. German Unit: 352nd Infantry Division, which was actually the remains of about 5 divisions under that name. If you have anything in depth of the units during the attack, let me know. A while ago I downloaded a user-made scenario for Cobra that has unit info and positions down to the battalion level on Jul-25. Does that help? It should be in the "Ernie's War" anthology. Martyr, thanks, I don't have that one, will have to go get it. MS, yes, that was at the start, however, heavy casualties from the fighting at Omaha had reduced those numbers greatly. 916th was not at Normandy but fighting in the Hedgerows, it is why the 352nd during Cobra was a mix of 5 divisions. Thank you however. The Americans led with the 120th Infantry Battalion. Seems they were the worse hit unit from the friendly fire bombings, and almost didn't kick off. I am doing the far right hand side of the bombardment area, 30th Infantry vs the 352nd. I got the elevation and water in, going to start with the hedgerows soon. I know it was the 120th Infantry regiment in the attack, but they had losses. Am at work, think it was 64 killed that day by the air bombardment. I also have the tank support [have the unit at home]. Holman Posted May 19, 2011 Share Posted May 19, 2011 Not to put pressure on Rune, but I'd love to see a CMBN campaign focused on the 30th ID. I feel like the 30th Infantry Division was one of the most representative and most undersung units in the European war. They were in everywhere and did everything, but somehow they never won the postwar attention or the glory given to the 1st and the 29th and the Airborne divisions. After D Day has some good accounts of the period for the 30th, but probably not as detailed as you are looking for. Below is a cite for the actual G3 reports for 30th ID in July. That site also has additional Divisional reports. I have nothing that could be considered useful after the first couple weeks fighting. The 352nd became such a hodgepodge that I suspect it may be near impossible to get really accurate data on unit strength. Sample from After D Day - Page 129 By July after being supplemented with remnants from 5 other units 352nd ID consisted of 1900 men and 40 artillery pieces. BG Kentner (266th ID) - listed on July 14th as having 316 men (had suffered friendly fire causalties as they had no more trained FOs) by July 25th it had 2 decimated infantry companies of about 30 men each at Hebecrevon BG Heintz - (from 275th ID) by late July was down to 600 men occupying 5 strong points around Hebrecevon each no larger than a reinforced platoon with a couple tanks, TDs or AT guns in support. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
