Louie the Rat Posted February 9, 2011 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Hi folks, I was wondering if anybody could give me a clue here. When I try to save an incoming email file I get the message "you do not have permission to save in this location contact your administrator" I'm running windows 7. I've tried running the game as admin no difference. I searched the forums for this but couldn't find anything. Also is there a better way to handle Play by email files? gibsonm Posted February 9, 2011 Share Posted February 9, 2011 I use DropBox (www.dropbox.com) You get 2Gb for free. Just copy the file there and then email your opponent that the file has been loaded. They have a link to it on their desktop and then copy it to the right place. Moon Posted February 9, 2011 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Louie, probably you have the game installed inside the Program Files folder. This is a restricted folder (Microsoft wants it so). You don't even need to log in (though doing so lets you save commonly used e-mails to a drop down box), and it sends automatically sends an e-mail to your opponent when its uploaded. DropBox for example has a shortcut / alias (depending on your OS) on your desktop and when its updated you get a desktop prompt from Growl, etc. So you do need to be on the Internet but not required to have email open. eniced73 Posted February 10, 2011 Share Posted February 10, 2011 I agree with gibsonm. Dropbox is a great way to go. Was there any talk of ever incorportating Dropbox into the game? I am playing a game that is setup to use dropbox for PBEM and everything is in game. You never have to touch a file. Just click Multiplayer and play your turn. I found that I can save the file to the desktop and then copy and paste it into the incoming email folder. Pretty clumsy procedure though. shock force is installed under programs, that was the default. The out going email saves fine, but I can't save to the incoming folder except by copying and pasting and then it asks for confirmation as admin. If I could just redirect where the game saves and loads files from it would be easy but I don't see anyway to do that. Should I move the game or reinstall it some where else? Schrullenhaft Posted February 10, 2011 Share Posted February 10, 2011 A vast majority of people have the game install to the default location: '\Program Files\Battlefront\Combat Mission Shock Force' With Windows Vista and Windows 7 a new security feature called 'User Account Control' (UAC) prevented programs from writing data to the '\Program Files' directory (or '\Program Files (x86)' directory for Windows 64-bit OSes). Instead these files are redirected to the hidden 'VirtualStore' directory buried in the '\User' directory. If you right-click and select "Run as administrator", supposedly it should allow the program the right to write in the '\Program Files' directory. If you are trying to copy the email with your email client, then you ALSO need to run your email client by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator" to allow it to write to the '\Program Files' directory. If you don't want to right-click each time, you can modify the shortcuts for the program by right-clicking and selecting 'Properties' from the popup menu. In here go to the 'Compatibility' tab and at the bottom of this tab is a section labeled 'Privilege Level'. Checkmark the box next to the text that says "Run this program as an administrator".
