MikeyD
I just stumbled across a previously unseen Challenger 2 pictoral article tonight, thought I'd share in anticipation of the arrival of the the 'virtual' beasty on your desktops soon. Who's up for some Challenger vs Abrams contests! http://www.militarymodelling.com/news/article.asp?a=3237

MikeyD
Does anyone actually field the Leopard 2A4 anymore? Everyone seems to be upgrading to A6s and above. The first linked site is interesting because it shows an uparmored Challenger 2 with Dorchester(?) armor blocks along the sides and slat armor. There's an later uparmored version out there too with a new bolt-on hull nose.
Mikko H.
Some years ago Finns purchased a number of second-hand Bundeswehr Leo 2A4's, and AFAIK the machines have not been upgraded. Swedish Army is downsizing its fleet of Leo 2A5's, and it's rumored that Finns are interested in buying their excess tanks.
Webwing
The first linked site is interesting because it shows an uparmored Challenger 2 Interesting that it does not use the toe armour, that seems to accompany the upgrade. -
flamingknives
AIUI the uparmour kits for Challenger 2 are referred to as Dorchester level XX, whatever XX is appropriate. The blocks could be nearly anything, but given the thickness and the fact that the suspension hasn't exploded, it's probably some kind of spaced array. The Toe armour is an additional upgrade. The first CR2s into Iraq (2003) didn't have the side turret arrays, after a few months those appeared and were the standard fit for a good while until an RPG-29 went through the lower hull of one and the toe armour was introduced, at a similar time to the introduction of the RWS on the turret top.
MikeyD
Yes, BIG differences between one 'level' of Challenger and another!

Smaragdadler
I have bought this new book about Leopard 2, I linked above. I would say it's the definite grog bible about this topic. The level of detail and info depth is just amazing. Full German/English Text, many many pictures never seen before, 1/35 scale drawings etc. I don't think there is a better book about this topic out there. It's actually only the first of two volumes. It covers the development of prototypes and all the different versions in Bundeswehr Service + Specialised Vehicles, Ammunition, Markings, Driver Instruction Vehicle and the new developments like 2A4 Evolution, 2A6EX, 2 PSO-UrbObs. The second volume will be available in Autumn 2009 and will cover all Leopard 2 versions in international service (Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Greece, Turkey, Chile, Singapore, Canada, Austria, Norway, Portugal and Switzerland) German review of volume 1 with more sample pages: http://www.panzer-modell.de/monatstipp/juni09/tipp.htm
