Civilisation advances into Europe.

Both the French* and Spanish governments are making their state run broadcasters advertisement free a la BBC. I have long loathed the theft of my time by adverts - 12 minutes per hour in the UK. As for the ruination of films etc. I think that upsets everyone.

In the US, presumably the worst case, in ten hours viewing there will be about three hours of adverts. As this has grown over the years an early Stratrek will have an extra 9 minutes cut to meet modern schedules.

But Diesel, you miss out on all that information! Which products not to buy - because a large part of their shelf price now has to pay for the advertising campaign and the product quality will fall to compensate: the ad campaign has to generate profits, or it's of no earthly use; the cost compensation has to come from somewhere.

the Australian equivalent of the BBC - the ABC - has never had advertising although it always has been something some more right wing commentators have suggested should happen, maybe they see the commercialisation as a foothold to break the percieved lefty bias (objectivity) of the ABC.

Here in the Netherlands the state television doesn't interrupt programs for adverts. Before/after a program only. The commercial stations still interrupt their programming, one going so far as to interrupt their films with a commercial block, go to a 20 minute soft news programme, more averts, then back to the movie. And they are the worst in cutting to the adverts, they'll do it at any moment in the plot action. VERY jarring.

I like watching the Beeb. Quick advert for their own programming, then on with their programming.

Dunno, I don't get HBO.

But I'm willing to bet HBOs news gathering department, if they even have one, sucks donkeys bollocks compared to the beebs. Don't think it helps that the Beeb has to cater to practically every audience out there.

Not that I don't think the Beeb hasn't spread itself rather thin since they went digital. Too much filler material like house makeover shows, cooking or antiques.Their historic programming has suffered badly too. :(

Oh well, there's always HIGNFY (Boris!) and Mock the Week.
