Why do my Javelins go flying off the map sometimes? Those guys firing them have to know that those missles are expensive and way overkill for ducks.

I understand the failure rate and that’s why I love this game. I even accept, when not using a specialist AT gunner, that the Javelins failure rate should be a tad bit higher. But…… It doesn’t seem to matter who’s using the Javelin because it seems to me that the failure rate is about 1/3. Same with the TOW, it makes me so mad to see a TOW just fly straight into the ground.

I do seem to see Javelins failing more often though. I think the failure rate for a Javelin with a trained AT soldier firing it should be 1/10 or 2/10. The TOW no more than 1/10.

In my in-game experience, Javelin failure rate is rather low, about 10% (perhaps less). TOWs, though, hit the ground short of the target about 10% to 30% of the time, depending on the launching vehicle's relation to the terrain between it and the target. The TOW's flight path looks rather odd; it looks somewhat like it's making many jerky course corrections once it leaves the tube. Shouldn't its guidance make its maneuvering more smooth? It seems to me that in plenty of cases, the TWO wouldn't have hit the ground if it hadn't been trying to barrel-roll.

Actually for this topic I have a quick story that a friend told me. He was in the Army and was at the range with his squad getting to practice using the TOW. (This was back in the late 80's early 90s) Anyway he had just fired the missile at the target when he noticed some movement while still targeting. Wondering what is was, he looked to his right and saw a deer standing just to the right of his target. Well needless to say, the missile found its mark...pieces of deer went flying all over the place. He said the sergeant was trying to yell at him while doubled over laughing.

As for the Javelin failure, I am really surprised. I have heard the the TOW has a higher failure rate since the wires can break while the missile is still in flight. I figured that since the Javelin was newer, it would be more reliable.

The missile doesn't know where it is when it leaves the tube, so the initial jerkiness comes from manuevering on-target and overcorrecting a bit.

When the army was testing the Bren gun in the initial stages a sheep wandered onto the range and my uncle being a resourceful chap missed the target and hit the said wooly critter. He said the burst of fire cut the animal in half instantly.

The mutton stew was good too, he said. Tho I would prefer the venison.
