flamingknives
Speaking of burning propellent getting back into the turret, I recall reading about a troop of Churchill tanks (what was that book, Peter someone?) doing a four gun salute. In order to do it safely, they removed the shells from the case, so as not to fling HE downrange. Unfortunately, this meant that there was no pressure to burn up all the propellant, and when the case was ejected automatically on the recoil, it came out spewing burning cordite all over the place. The commander (the author) was unceremoniously dumped out of the turret by the gunner as the latter got out.
Thomm
On the news today, they showed Israeli self-propelled guns shoot their rounds, and afterwards a half-meter long flame burned out of the barrel for a few seconds. It definitely was a process that had nothing to do with the initial combustion. Was very interesting to watch. Best regards, Thomm
