New Scenario Idea

Recommended Posts

So I was just dreaming up my first scenario idea zooming around through Google Earth and decided a mixed force simulating a US civil war scenario could be entertaining. What follows is the first draft of the mission briefing, wanted to know if anyone thinks this sounds interesting and want me to put the effort into making it. Please keep in mind the units listed are just my first thought. I'll have to actually load them in and test out the scenario to make sure it is fun and winnable with the force loadouts I plan.

Mission-Welcome to Roswell, New Mexico. The civil war rages on across the country and you are the leader of our special operations division in this state. Our national intelligence apparatus has scored a coup. We have learned that our rivals, the Army of the United States, AUS, recently acquired a large amount of classified data when they overran CIA headquarters in Langley, VA. One of the government secrets they uncovered is that the federal government did in fact recover a UFO at Roswell in the 1950’s. The AUS branch here in New Mexico managed to secure the remnants of this craft which possesses incredibly advanced technology. They have moved to this small abandoned airfield southeast of Roswell and are holed up inside a warehouse with their cargo. In one hour, an AUS cargo aircraft will arrive to retrieve the cargo and transport it to a more secure AUS base. Your mission is to secure the warehouse by any means necessary before that plane arrives. If you can eliminate the AUS troops in the area it will greatly aid our battles, but your troops are the best we have in this region so please don’t waste them. Good luck, if the Patriots of America, POA, wins this battle it may help us win the war in the future and help to rebuild this country.

Friendly Forces-You have at your disposal one platoon of light infantry, it is a mix of former military and weekend warriors, but they are decently trained, highly motivated, well equipped, and your squad leaders are all ex-infantry. You will be inserted at your starting point via boat and thus will not have vehicles. However, this is America, scout around and I’m sure you can find a car or two that you can commandeer if you feel you need transportation. We have two observation teams equipped with sniper rifles in over watch of the airfield. Finally, when we cleared out the local National Guard Armory we managed to snag a few 60mm mortar tubes and a decent stockpile of ammo, these are setup to provide you with whatever support they can.

Enemy Forces-As best as our intelligence group has been able to ascertain there are approximately a reinforced platoon worth of AUS troops holding the airfield and securing the warehouse with the cargo. We do not know what sort of firepower they have, but they should not have any heavy weapons systems. We have observation teams watching all routes approaching the airfield and will try to intercept any reinforcements sent your way.

Weather-It is a clear night with excellent visibility and calm winds.

I live in New Jersey .. what side would I play?

Are you simulating Americans vs Americans within USA borders?

The idea is creative but I would never play such a battle. It would be too sad.

I grew up siming killing Germans and Soviets. Your scenario idea is chilling if I understand it right.

Kev,

Well tell you what, we can always say the side holding the airfield was a group of Mexican raiders ;) . Pancho Villa's great grandson leading them.

You're right the idea is chilling, but Americans kill each other on the streets every day, only difference is here the government has finally collapsed and the violence has become more organized and whatever we want to pretend there are nutjob militia groups out there right now who would gladly stage an insurrection in the United States if they thought they could get away with it.

The most important thing to remember, it's a game and an entirely fictional scenario within the game. Just interested to see how well it simulates a small squad special forces style raid and wanted to see if any others would be interested in trying it out. And by the way I live in Maryland and am a former West Pointer so not like I'm some American-hating foreigner, just willing to think outside the box for new possibilities for the game.

I am actually in the process of making a Blue vs Blue series of scenarios. I'm bascially ripping off "Apocalypse Now". There's a rogue unit in the Middle East that is conducting unauthorized, brutal, but highly effective counter-insurgency operations.

The first mission is a group of MP 1114's, with escort, attempting to gain entry to Colonel Kilgore's FOB, by way of a small checkpoint. If they manage to get past the CP, they'll arrest him. His troops are loyal to his cause and are attempting to stop him.

The next mission is a force on force battle that follows the CP engagement. The MP's and escort were destroyed. CENTCOM decides to bring in a heavy force and subdue the FOB. Kilgore has the terrain, some artillery, his helicopters, and the fanaticism of his troops. The opposing force has far more troops, artillery, helicopters, and fighter-bomber support. Although having more tools, the CENTCOM unit has lower motivation and morale. The soldiers are obeying orders, but don't have their hearts in the fight.

The last mission is an escape. Kilgore's forces have inflicted heavy casualties, but ultimately lost. Kilgore orders a delayed surrender, allowing him and a few extremely loyal troops to flee for the mountains. This would be a much smaller scale battle than the second one. The key element being Kilgore's unit. Massive points if he is able to escape.

You can try combining these missions into a campaign.

Nice idea Bradley, I agree doing it as a short campaing may be nice, from both sides (camping red & campaing blue). I think this kind of stuff won't appeil MOST (but yes some) die-hard grogs, but for the rest of us could be funny stuff to play.

An other context for blue on blue may be "training excercises and wargames", I know is not very original but is an easy way to justify your scenarios.

Just add some sort "This is a training excercise conducted using lasers etc.", hardly to imagine with all these bullets and explosions going around LOL, but it can be done.

On the original post, it may do for a small infantry action battle, I would try it out as all the scenarios I've played so far had armored elements included in some way or an other.

Bradley,

That sounds like it could be quite entertaining. KNac the only issue with making it playable as both Red & Blue is that the AI is far better at defense than attack for obvious reasons. I'm not saying it wouldn't be possible, just that it will require A LOT of testing to make an AI that attacks in any way that could be called formidable. Although with that much firepower even the AI may manage to make a go of it. Either way I'd definitely be willing to try it out.

Nac,

Glad to hear at least someone is curious in trying something besides mechanized ops. I will start work on the scenario later today, hopefully have it done by tmrw or maybe early next week at least for a playable testing version. I'm using sat images of an actual location so going to take some time to try and get it to look approximately the same.

You are right ... its outside the box and I would encourage you to continue with the idea. I am warming up to it. Also, is there not a real time game based on the Mexican border coming out soon? Anyway ... I like Bradley's idea too. Happy to test and give feedback. I am playing with the editor too ... lots of possibilities.

Surely the "Americans" outside the base are merely Communist infiltrators out to destroy baseball, apple pie, and the purity of your essence.

I'm slightly surprised I haven't seen any Uncon-Uncon city scenarios (think Lebanese civil war, say) or really silly concept maps (like two mechanized forces racing -- most points for crossing your own checkpoints, with intersecting tracks and perhaps a non-point detour to an overlook), but perhaps the crowd here has too much taste for that. tongue.gif

Sadly I've had to do some modifying of my original idea. For those of you who haven't tested it out yet, hitting US troops at night over open terrain is just about impossible, thanks to the night vision and being inside buildings, they will engage long before your guys, even if US, can spot and return fire. So the scenario is more like a purple on red type now than blue v blue. I could've left it blue on blue but it would've required the attacking force having a much higher amount of supporting assets than I would like.
