Scooby33
For those of us poor souls with lower-end machines, which tweaks have the most noticeable effect on performance? I'm still fiddling...trying to find the optimal balance. (BTW - I have a P3 500 w/ATI Radeon)
Captain Wacky
Try playing with a low-res grass. Grass is one of the biggest hogs in CM because of the large maps. The difference in visual quality between high and low res grass is fairly negligible, too.

Sergei
Decreasing horizon can be a saviour on larger maps... of course you need to make it unlimited again to be able to see the overall picture, and if it's a 2 km tank duel or something, then it's no help. But when plotting moves for infantry and the likes of that, or if LOS is limited, you don't need to see so far.
Bruno Weiss
...and turn off them building shadows. Shadows in games chew up the resources.
Marco Bergman
I have found that turning off ambient sounds and a low res grass were the two big speed enhancements, closely followed by horizon distance. Tree display level becomes a factor when there a a lot of them, and doodads minimal or off also helps a little.
Louie the Toad
Is the default grass in BB high or low res? Anyone know? Free Up the Resources , Free Up the Resources... Toad
Captain Wacky
The default CMBB grass is high res at 512x512. I did a low res gridded version that's 256x256, which comes out to 1/4 of the original size. http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=001391 I loaded up the To the Volga operation last nite just to see how it would run, and I think I was getting 10 frames per second at the most That on an AMD 1900+ with 512ram and a Geforece3 Ti500
