Oh, behave!!!

There are plenty of comp.jihads you can join, try one of these:

alt.microsoft.sucks

<a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=alt.linux.sucks" target="_blank">

alt.linux.sucks</a>

Sorry, Mac-bashers, there is no alt.mac.sucks, at least not on Google. ;)

A Linux version of CM isn't meant to replace the Windows version, but to complement it. Just like the Mac version didn't replace the Windows version.

But if we who use LInux and want CM to be ported to it do not express our wishes, how can BTS know that there is a wish for it? There is no need to argue about how good the latest version of Windows is, Windows-users (and Mac-users) will get their CM anyway.

Porting CM to another OS will of course be more work (Slapdragon made a post on page 1 of this thread about porting MacOS X-apps to Linux), but only BTS can decide if it's worth the potential trouble.

I would definitely buy a Linux version, and there seem to be a few more potential customers. But BTS must bring out the crystal ball and see how widespread Linux will be when CM II is released. ;)

Enough Mac, Windoze, Linux, RSTS/E, whatever is best.

90% of the world, and quite probably BTS doesn't actually care. Strangely, neither do I.

The world has turned since I posted my question above. My time for playing games has diminished, my inclination to program instead of gaming has increased. My willingness to boot into windows just to play games has dwindled to nothing. I now subscribe to transgamings winex. When CM II is released, if the demo works under winex, I'll buy it. If not, C'est la vie. If the real thing fails where the demo worked, maybe I'll try cajoling BTS into making some tweaks, but probably I'll just sink some hours into improving the winex code. At least I have that option.

CM is unlikely to ever work under wine because DirectX lessthan 5 code isn't being worked on by anybody as far as I am aware. While CM is good, it's not good enough for me to want to sink that much time into making it work under Linux. There are more fun games that I can make more headway with.

I develop closed source software for a living (java/unix), so I understand the economics. If you want to develop games for a living, you go where the money is. I doubt CM is a stellar earner, so BTS really do have to go where the money is if they want to make a CM style of game.

My best hope for a native Linux CM II is if one of the BTS guys is either hooked on MacOS X and inclined to write OpenGL for it or moves across to Linux as a favourite platform for hobbyist reasons. BSD (MacOS X underpinnings) + C + OpenGL -> Linux + C + OpenGL is a reasonably light weight port, so a *might* get lucky and have that make economic sense. Other than that, it's going to be a hobby thing. From the posts I've seen here, it's unlikely to bring in more than 20 sales ( 5 or so from the list, 10 or so who'll see it's Linux and buy it on principle and another 5 who'll see it on one of the Linux pages and buy it because the demo was cool). That's probably slightly pessimistic. One of the Linux game publishing companies (or ex game publishing companies like Loki) could probably give quite an accurate estimate, but being businesses, they don't want to tell (the truth) because their sales figures are commercially sensitive.

Boy, what a rant smile.gif As for maintaining this thread for wine discussion, you're probably better to open another one when CM II is released.

Finally, whoever said "but I know I'm right" I can see only three possible reasons for saying that:

1) You omitted (or I failed to see) the smiley. I hope this is the case.

2) You said it purely as flamebait. If this is the case: You may find zealot baiting fun, but it clutters the forum (and my inbox as a result of the "someone has replied to your post" messages) with crap. If we're truely unlucky, you may actually agravate some maladjusted little creep to crack this server and track you down. As I don't know you from Adam, that wouldn't really bother me. The resulting bad press for CM, BTS and computer games and gamers in general however would. Please refrain from baiting people online.

3) You actually thought it had some merit as a convincing argument. The statement is semantically equivilant to "There is nothing you can say which will change my opinion". This statement identifies you as a zealot.

It pays to remember that <sarcasm>those fine folks</sarcasm> who crashed airliners into the world trade center also knew they were right. Those who support their actions also continue to know that they too are right.

Minor point of clarification, Kurtz. CM was designed and built on a Mac and ported to the others, not the other way around.

OK, I think we should probably put this one to sleep for obvious reasons smile.gif

We have no plans to port Combat Mission to any other platform besides Windows and MacOS. We have far too many things on our plate to do this ourselves or manage someone else doing it. Heck, we aren't even making a MacOS X native version of CMBB. In fact, neither Charles nor I even have MacOS X, even though we use the Mac every day. Heck, Charles even does his preliminary Windows porting using Virtual PC on the Mac smile.gif Cripes, I still use MacOS 8.6 on my primary system because I'm too lazy to upgrade.

When we rewrite the game engine we will make it MacOS X native. If this opens up doors to a LINUX port, then perhaps it might become a viable option. But we currently have no plans to support LINUX specifically at this point in time.

Steve
