How come the absence of motorcycle battalions?

Recommended Posts

One might say the same thing about the

ubiquitous German halftracks: ie that

they are too vulnerable to be used...

(see various long-running debates on

this forum, the most recent being in

regard to JasonC's Kursk campaign)

As the Soviet player, I have devoured

hundreds of halftracks, when they are

used foolishly by opponents...

The real issue, IMHO, is one of map size

(and this relates to soft motor transport

as well)...on a big enough map you can

use your transport effectively to switch

troops rapidly from one area to another,

stopping short of the actual 'hot' area

and disembarking troops...

This is not to say that MC troops did not

in RL actually sieze bridges in 'hot' areas,

or perform other very dangerous tasks...

Like the horsed cavalry issue, this has been

warmly debated a lot...

To see how life would be in a motorcycle battalion try staging an assault with the closest equivalent in CM... jeep mgs. Its not pretty. I recalll Matt was frightened of seeing increadibly gamey Mad Max scenarios involving dozens of bikers buzzing around a single KV-2.

BFC's attitude towards motorcycles, bicycles, horses, donkey carts, etc. is that experienced troops would quickly learn to leave them well back out of rifle/mortar range. The stated advantage of the halftrack was its ability to drive the troops up to within a HALF MILE of the front! Hell, Matt wasn't even particularly enthused about providing us with trucks, except they make mighty convenient targets.

Nah, CM is fine for me even without the motorcycles ;) .

Huuh. I totally agree.

But as proven by the posted picture above, the motorcycle is pretty cool.
