Lurkur
I need to find some history regarding the decision to include the SturmTiger in CMBB, and why they made it shoot 3 times faster than it could sustain in RealLife™. I have tried various searches but found nothing. Can anyone point me to a thread where Battlefront has discussed this? It is being considered for inclusion in an ongoing campaign, and my gut feeling is that it is an imbalanced and imbalancing unit. Fine for the occassional goofy QB but not for anything remotely striving for reality. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
John Kettler
Lurkur, The Sturmtiger saw combat in both the West and the East. A bunch of Shermans learned this the hard way in the former case (blown over by the 250lb bomb equivalent blast), and photos exist of several others, at least one sporting several new American cannon produced openings in the hull rear. The Sturmtiger was used in East, as attested by footage available online showing one bombarding Warsaw during the uprising. Said footage is here, together with quite a discussion of the Sturmtiger's armament. http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=011257#000000 Brief discussion here (last post) of ROF issue. http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=010440#000000 Warsaw Rising scenarios by rune et al. http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=009804#000003 Sturmtiger operational history & scenarios http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=009328#000000 Capturing a Sturmtiger--after being shot at by one! Sandeu
Here is a Video of a Sturmtiger firing, and a link to a Sturmtiger data sheet. For those who don't know what a Sturmtiger is. http://www.onwar.com/tanks/germany/data/sturmtiger.htm http://www.panzermuseum.com/sturmtiger-assault-gun.html
Bannon DC
That Sturmtiger in the Panzermuseum link fired twice in 7 seconds.
Broompatrol
Yes, I beleive I read somewhere a well trained Sturmtiger crew could fire off all the ammo in under 90 seconds. They would train for hours with Swiss Navy gunners. The Swiss SBB's (Schnell blitz boots) or fast attack boats carried a single 497mm mortar adapated from the ones used by Grant when laying siege to Atlanta during the American Civil War.
MikeyD
I don't think Sturmtiger should be taken too seriously in the game. Usually it gets trotted out a couple times for a laugh but the beast is too rare, expensive and awkward to use to be purchased on a regular basis. You're liable to see KV-2s more often! I've only used it once 'seriously' in a combined arms battle on a big map. Firing the gun at near its max range is good for a chuckle, it's just so freakin' inaccurate!
slysniper
and why they made it shoot 3 times faster than it could sustain in RealLife™. I find the first part of this interesting, I cannot test it right now since the game is not with me, but I remember designing a scenario with one and I recall that it was lucky to see it fire more than once every other turn, I know the real thing had real problems with how a crew could reload it because of layout. But what are you saying the real rate of fire should be. As far as QB's, you propably are justified to make house rules against using it but again i have seen some with so many house rules that you might as well get away from QB's and learn to fight with what is given, even if against SturmTigers
Splinty
I used one in "Clash of the Titans" just for kicks. I are fired on a flag on a road intersection until it used up it's ammo load. I was playing against the AI, and the thing actually killed about four HTs. They were all piled up at the intersection and got taken out with a single hit!
Other Means
I've had one used against me in a QB. I disabled it with a light flak when it was out of range of everything else. I thought it was a Brumbar until the AAR. And yes, my mate hated me for it.
