Please pardon a newbie's ignorance

Recommended Posts

I have ordered the game, and expect to receive it today or tomorrow. I am thrilled, truly.

I have downloaded the most recent patch, and will install it immediately.

I have read a little about the modifications (mods) to the graphic images...but I am a little unsure about which mods are best/needed.

Can someone provide just a little info about the best web-sites, with the greatest number of mods, which ones are the best, and a little on how to install them, and a little more information on what exactly do they do.

I greatly appreciate your help, expect to see a new victim on-line over the next couple of days.

Cheers

No mods are needed in the traditional sense, but they make the game much nicer looking if you have at least a fairly decent video card.

As far as what mods are best then it's all a matter of personal taste. I personally think that Pawbroon's Austin Powers Wasp mod is the best mod out there :D

Links to sites will follow.

So you want some mods, eh? Yeah, I can hook you up-and all it will cost you is your soul, Mwahahahhahah!

Seriously, try these links:

http://www.combatmission.com http://www.combat-missions.net http://home.nexgo.de/tcmhq/TCMHQ.html http://www.afv-uk.net/cmoutpost/ http://www.warfarehq.com/

That should pretty much get you modded up with every vehicle in the game, and a lot of the sounds. I recommend installing the big mods first, such as the ones which mod many vehicles at one time. The Mad Dog Mod Packs are a great start. It's easier if you get the obscure vehicles out of the way first by using these mods before you get vehicle-specific ones.

Have fun, and your CM will never look the same again.

The best idea is to go to the websites mentioned in this thread and browse the mod sections picking and choosing what you want. Like Gyrene wrote, it's entirely up to you what you want to download. If you're happy with the delivered graphics, fine. I and many others replaced most of the delivered graphics with user created mods. I would though recommend looking at the user made terrain mods and winter equipment mods because a lot of them are excellent. I think you'll find yourself going back and browsing the user mods over and over again and downloading very different versions to compare them in the game itself. It does take some time but I found it fun to see what kind of new mods there are.

Kudos have to go to BTS for allowing their graphics to be changed by the user community.

You don't need to install the latest patch. It's already on the CD and will install as part of it.

Sounds like you got all the info you needed in regards to mods so let me welcome you to the best forum out there and the best by far game you'll ever play. I envey you for just beginning this fantasic experience. Just think of the money you'll save not ever having to buy another game well at least until CM2 comes out. Oh by the way are you married and were you a happy couple? Just asking no real reason. :D But really Welcome to the board dsvitak.

Thanks to all for the information about the modifications.

I will probably look at and download all the mods before I start playing.

Having been a gamer for a very long time (first game was Tactics II, 1965 or so), my lovely wife understands my passion (obsession).

As far as this board, I was astounded when I saw the number of posts. THAT was what sold me on the quality of the game.

Hmmm....what have I learned from the board.....buy 155's for the VT, German SMG's are excellent on the defense, man-portable FT have little value, point are better spent for arty than CAS, and don't play (right away, anyway) some guy named Fionn.

Thanks again, and I am looking forward to the Austin Powers mod. :D

the mods are graphical only, no new 3d models or vehicles or unit stats.

for pcs: you get a buncha .bmp files usually in a .zip file.

unzip using "winzip" then have the .bmp overwirite the .bmp files in your combatmission/BMP directory.

after a while you will want to back up the bmp dir so if you install a bad mod you can go back to the way it was before.

if you got an apple i think it is the same except you got to get a program mentioned in the faq link in my signature to convert the bmps...
