New MOD: narrow targeting/movement lines

Recommended Posts

With all the vehicles and terrain modified and subdued, I think the movement and targeting lines are a bit too broad and bright now.

I've tweaked the #2020 bmp for a little change.

This is the old version:

View?u=1552350&a=11789976&p=42065967&Sequence=0&res=high

And this is the new one:

View?u=1552350&a=11789976&p=42065968&Sequence=0&res=high

If you like it, you can get the mod here:

http://www.geocities.com/mike8g/narrowlines.zip

(copy and paste the URL to a new browser window - required due to geocities)

BTW: the bright blue line from the LOS tool can't be changed - it's hard-coded.

There's another -even more narrow- variant on this thread, just look some posts below.

The download triggered by the link provided works.

That looks so good it's a keeper.

Noticed how they look more subdued?

And BTW, that's one more user of DeanCo's MOD.

How many of you are NOT using this actually?

Marcus,

I just tried the link a couple of times and I keep getting "This page is not available."

Your mod looks great though.

Man, I thought this had to be a joke -- why wouldn't the game just render these with hardcoded colors like it apparently does the unit bases? Anyway, I looked at 2020.bmp, and it sure looks like it might be legit.

Since I play with "Show all Paths / All Target Lines" on, this could help (give the illusion) of de-cluttering my orders screen.

Hmm...I wonder if the engine allows these to be transparent (and if so, would it look good), or perhaps even textured???

It works - I've just tested it again.

I don't think that a texturized version will look good. If you look at the #2020 bmp, you will see that there is only a small color patch, which is stretched for building the line. A texture will be distorted too much.

A transparent version is possible of course, (just fill the whole bmp with pink color), but you won't see anything, which doesn't make sense.

sbg2112, you've triggered an idea for me.

I've made the lines even more narrow, the new variant looks like this:

View?u=1552350&a=11789976&p=42065966&Sequence=0&res=high

Actually, I mis-spoke: when I said "textured", I was thinking about line-effects such as dashed, etc. (To do this I guess you'd take a color band devoted to a particular color line and draw some pink bands across it; I realize these are thin bands, so maybe there's not much room to work.) Basically, use color and any other technique to develop a definite visual priority to the different kinds of lines.

Your razor-thin lines look good, although perhaps a little too thin. Interesting how much more pronounced the waypoints are now.

Great mod Mike. I have one question and I'm wondering if anyone is noticing this or having a similar problem.

The "targeting" line is still the original width but all the other lines are thin. In other words, when I press "T" or select "Target" from the list, I still get the original wide line.

I downloaded you're first one (lines seem a bit too thin in the second).

Any ideas?

russellmz,

yes the Kübelwagen is modded.

You can get the basic grey version from MO's CM site:

http://www.angelfire.com/ns/mocm/axisvehicles.html

(The version shown on the pics is a subdued variant, which I've done for my personal use some days ago - like the subdued Marder II)

sbg2112,

regarding the dashed line idea:

I've tested it and the results were not very satisfying. Have a look here:

View?u=1552350&a=11789976&p=42066543&Sequence=0&res=high

Some color lines show an annoying blurry effect (for example the green ambush line from Marder II to the truck). Personally I don't like this one very much, but if anyone wants to have it, here's the URL:

http://www.geocities.com/mike8g/brokenline.zip

(copy & paste the URL into a new browser window - required due to Geocities)

sitzkrieg,

when using the TARGET command, the program uses it's LOS routines. As I've mentioned in my first post, those routines and its color effects are hard-coded and cannot be changed.

the blurring effect may be wanted for some people.

thanks for the link!

Sorry, guess I should have read your first post more closely. redface.gif

Thanks for the response and thanks for an excellent mod. It really makes waypoint and road movement easier to plot.
