Download the full game?

Recommended Posts

BTS:

How about letting people that have purchased (preordered) CM download the full version and the manual as a PDF? Just charge the credit card and email the buyer a code to download it?

I have a cable modem and can download quickly.

Thanks,

Rob C.

Id like to do this too. But I bet they are afraid of warez. Thing is, though, that people who play this kind of game arent typically warez kind of people.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Go to Jakarta or KL or Singapore and be amazed at the number of wargame rips they have and sell in broad daylight in department stores and Malls, sometimes just across from a store selling legal copys.

Oh and a search on the topic should come up with a thread where the pros and cons of downloading the game was discussed and vetoed by BTS

I also would prefer this option. I happen to live in South America and I'm afraid that USPS will take 3 to 6 months to deliver my order. I ordered 5 copies for me and my friends but we would love to be able to play this game sometime this year.

And, yes, the problem is on the USPS side. In Chile, mail is generally delivered within 24 - 48 hours.

At least allow me to download the game while I wait for the manual to arrive by mail.

I understand the concerns about Warez. I'm sick of seeing people posting ripped ISO's before games are even out of reproduccion. But forcing non-US citizens to wait months for a game to arrive via the Post Office will not stop the thieves, it will actually encourage them.

I've talked to a lot of people here that have stated that they WILL pirate the game just because they do not want to wait but they would have bought it if downloading was an option. Why wait 3 to 6 months when Billy Bob's House of WaReZ has it now?

In reality, how does this reluctance to use modern delivery systems help stop theft? If I were to pirate the game and sell copies, what difference is it if I buy a CD to rip and zip it over downloading the game and password unzipping it? The end result is a cracked zip on Billy Bob's House of WaReZ.

Offering download versions will also allow BTS to have companies like www.outpost.com market and sell the game. This may help reach consumers who otherwise would not have heard of Combat Mission.

The other option is for BTS to please reconsider using UPS for overseas shipments. It may be more hassle on your end but UPS is a far more reliable method of delivering the goods.

Thanks.

P.S. Just to make it clear, I do not condone Warez (robbery) in any way, shape or form. I actively condemn it whenever I can. Billy Bob's House of Warez is a fictional name and any relation to a real site (if it exists) is purely coincedental.

As far as I know it is not going to happen. It has already been discussed before. Do a search and you might find a thread explaining why. smile.gif Have a nice day! smile.gif

Well, I've searched and searched and found nothing.

And przy's smug remark really pissed me off. I almost canceled my order when I saw that until I calmed down enough to realize that he doesn't speak for BTS.

Maybe BTS could kindly add to their FAQ why international customer's concerns are dismissed?

Here's one of the more recent threads about this, in which Steve stares BTS' thoughts on why they won't have a downloadable version.

www.battlefront.com/discuss/Forum1/HTML/003782.html

As for sending by some other method, you might want to get in touch with Steve and see if that can be done. I suspect that they chose things based on lowest price, but I'm sure you can pay a little more to have it sent by a faster method (I think I remember Steve mentioning something like this in another thread... I could be wrong though.

sorry to those who are new here but this one as been covered to death.

I too was a strong advocate of a 300 meg download. And Yes SPW@W is a HUGE 300 meg file download and the statistics regarding how many times that file has been downloaded (in the Thousands by now I'm sure) is a testament to the fact that there are many many internet users out there with cable modems. BUT it must be pointed out that Matrix chose to GIVE that one away for free so no security or credit card authentication on a secure web server was needed. This is a large undertaking and Steve and BTS have concluded that it is not worth the risk or expense to set up a secure server for those of us with cable modems.

So that puts us all on even footing (in the same boat) waiting for a cd shipped via the mail.

I understand their position in that we are all going to buy this delightful game anyway, so why bother to go to the expense and risk (of piracy) of setting up a secure server, as no one will base their decision to buy this game based on whether or not it can be downloaded with a credit card.

I'm sure similiar words to this effect can be read in Steve's posts

ok?

As I said in my post, the other option is to allow us to pay for courier delivery. However, I seem to remember that it was too much of a hassle to offer us the choice.

Yes, I will happily pay for DHL, Fed-Ex or UPS. I'm used to paying more in freight than the value of the product but at least I know I will actually get the product and that it will arrive within the calender year.

As it is, I've placed a small order and am praying that I will see it before CM2 is released. I couldn't get any one else to buy it since they'll just go to Billy Bob's and will be playing it before I do.

I'm sure I'm uninformed here, but it seems to me that it is just as easy to copy-protect a downloaded version as a CD... simply require a code to be typed in during the install process and only secure email the code to credit card on-line buyers. The same code would be required on installation of the CD version... where the code is included in the packaging. This is how Microsoft does it.

I am against taking *any* chances. No download version if there is any risk. If you can't wait..too bad. Myself and others have waited 2 years now. I wouldn't risk the future of CM. Wait or try to break the law. Your choice.

Funny, I haven't talked to people like this. You look like a witness to me.

Talked to can mean many things, like talking in a chatroom with only pseodonyms...

The main problem with a validation key is, that when the algorythm is in the gamecode itself - then it can easily be found and a keygenerator coded (or completely ripped of).

For CDs the Safedisk and ?Laserlook? copyprotections is better but can be hacked too. The best copyprotection I found up to date is the key from Quake3. (Don't shoot me cause I mention this game ;).

I have no way to validate my thoughts on this but I think it works this way:

Its a long list of random keys - no algorithm. So when a server checks your key it contacts IDs keyserver and validates it.

I think same could be done (OK, its too late for CM1) with CM - PBEM would be played over a 'mail-server' from BTS and in the mail had to be a valid key. But thats impractible I think.

This is a VERY good thread (see below), you should read it in its entirety before posting further to this thread. At that time before the most recent server crash I was "major_tom" (still the same tom w) and strongly advocated the Large 300/350 meg file download of the final version with a credit card.

BUT in reading Steve's posts/replies it became clear to me that BTS has no intention of facilitating this kind of technology or delivery of their game. I respect their decision and it seems pretty clear to me that it is final.

Oh well, I preordered and I'll wait like everyone else to get mine in the mail.

Please read this thread, it contains all the relevant info on the Full Version Downloadable issue.
