Erwin
Re uncompressing and reinstalling, I use a similar method with my other machines, using both Win 7 and Win 10, and had no problems. The only difference is that the older machines use AVG rather than the Windows security. I have disabled Defender, but will install AVG and see if that helps. You guys saying that I should d/l 7-Zip and try that? As far as I can see there are no brz files missing. Could the files inside the brz. or the .exe file be corrupted by other (de)compression software? Unfortunately (or fortunately these days) am sequestered in isolated location with no convenient hardware access. Plus, I really don't like opening up machines and messing with their guts. If you knew what expensive messes I have accomplished doing that (also with cars)... Now I just pay specialists like car mechanics. But, the very good tech guy I have worked with for over 10 years also gave up, as have tech support here. He blamed the outdated CM2 software (FWIW). Note that Win is always trying to update things. I try to no do that and delay that as long as possible as I figure every Win update is basically a beta and customers are doing the testing. Could that be part of the issue? I used nVidia control panel to choose the CPU graphics and applied it. No difference. Am resisting STEAM as the whole point of getting a new machine was so that I wouldn't load any software into a brand new "virgin" machine that sends info back to who knows where. I had assumed that a virgin machine would have no issues with new game software.
Sgt.Squarehead
Get a new tech guy, fully blank everything, reinstall Win 10, fully update it, disable defender, create install directory, install games, create defender exclusion for directory, restart defender, play games! PS - Tell the new tech guy that playing CM is what you are paying him for and don't let him leave until you can.....You are an American so I am assuming that you have a gun? If it is part of the issue, it must be somewhat random or perhaps based on very specific hardware combinations, as most people don't have issues but some (such as your good self) unfortunately do.

See IF the game runs. You can then uninstall Steam but seeing if Black Sea from Steam runs would give you some more info to work with. You might even be able to grab the Steam BRZs and put them in your Battlefront install.
