Take cover in a shell hole? Heres how.

Recommended Posts

Troops won't always use a shell hole for cover, but you can make them. Move your troop over a shell hole with any move commands. When they are inside it hit backspace. This cancels the move command and forces them to stop inside the shell. From there you can deploy your weapons with some pretty nice cover. It works great for small teams of men, all sorts of MG teams, mortars, snipers, AT teams or small teams that you have split like scouts.

I used that in WEGO (cancel move) to get infantry stopped in column formation in deep ditches (-2m), so they remain in maximum cover that time. No idea if that still works in V4.0 due to the new infantry spacing routines. Craters were always an infantry magnet, particularly for the AI player, so one usually can count on infantry using them as cover preferably. Got to test in V4.0 whether there´s still a preference for craters, when there´s also foxholes in the same AS.

Er, this sounds like it would only work in RT play. Hitting Backspace in WEGO erases the entire movement leg, <Snip>

I have often used this to get teams to buddy aid in WEGO.  I use the Slow command and then cancel when they are in the same action spot near the casualties (can be a little fiddly but they just have to be close).  I finish it off with the Face command aiming it over the casualty.  With a crater it would probably be easier since the crater is bigger and the AI seems to be attracted to them anyways.

Here is what I do for buddy aid. I believe this is what @MOS:96B2P is describing. If the casualty or crater is not in or near the centre of the action square I give the unit I want to perform buddy aid or get into the crater a slow order to an action square that takes them directly over the casualty or crater. Then I give them a pause of 20s, 30s or 45s depending now how far away the casualty or crater is. Push the BRB. In the next command phase they will be directly over the casualty or crater and you then cancel the remaining slow order and issue a face command or whatever else you want.

This is during the Command Phase, right?

Michael

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well.  What Ian said.
