The backstory is spread between pages 4 and 5 followed by a synopsis of the war on pages 6 and 7. After that it segues into the campaigns through page 9. Its not exactly a full treatise on the topic but it appears to hit the high points. The Beta team has a much larger (and constantly evolving) backstory to work off of. It wasn't til I looked in the manual that I saw they had indeed given a nod of acknowledgement to the events of 2014. For most of the game's evolution current events were placed aside.
