rocketman
I'm doing some tests for a Merville Battery scenario that I intend to make. When testing engineers ability to mark mines under fire, I noticed that engineers without satchel charges lose the "mark mines" command. Which seems odd as no satchel charges are spent when marking mines. Couldn't find anything in the manual about it. Could it be a bug?
Warts 'n' all
I'm not sure quite what is causing that. Having satchel charges should not make a difference, given the fact that Engineer Platoon HQs have a "Mark Mines" command button and never carry satchel charges. You might need to do some more tests to find the cause.
Pete Wenman
Works for me all ok. Engineers need to detect (spot) the mines before the command becomes active so maybe you need to leave them for a couple of additional turns to see if the mark mine command becomes active. rocketman
This is how the test works out. Usually if adjecent to and not directly upon the mine marker makes you "mark mines". Note that the engineers squad has been split. Edited January 11, 2015 by rocketman
Pete Wenman
Rocketman I'd hazzard a guess and say the lack of markmines command is due to there only being 3 men in the squad. A whole squad with no demo charge will clear mines as will a squad of 4 men with no demo charge, so it looks like 4 is the minimum requirement to mark mines, which to my mind does not seem unreasonable. rocketman
But shouldn't it be possible to even mark mines with one guy, even though it would take much longer? But then again, I'm no engineer and know nothing about how mines where marked IRL.
Pete Wenman
Yes I guess one man can do it in RL, but given an action square is a 8m sq area in game it's probably easier and more intuitive to make it that 3 men or less is insufficient given the time constraints of the game. Baneman
But in the bottom picture, that's a Bren team. Sure, they're part of an Engineer Company, but they are not actually engineers...
womble
Only troops with the description "Engineer" in the bottom left corner of the play area (where it tells you what they're doing) can mark mines. The 3 Section combined A-B team looks like it might still have an engineer. The C team may well not have. Engineers start with the demo charges. If you lose engineers and don't manage to buddy aid (loot) the demo charges off them you'll lose the charges too. Assuming you haven't used any demo charges (since you're testing Mark Mines), the lack of demo charges in the C-Team would tend to support my speculation, and the sole remaining demo charge in A-B suggests that only one of the rifles left in B Team is an engineer. The specialism "Engineer" doesn't appear in the unit info pane where it says Gunner under the Bren silhouette.
rocketman
You're correct, the info in the left corner is what to go from - checked the original screenshots.
Artofwar
Here is a recent post with more info. http://community.battlefront.com/topic/117407-mark-mines-command-the-28th-fights-back/ The mark minds command only comes up if the sit stationary in the area for awhile but then you know that but to even have a glimmer of hope that the mark mines command comes up thats the first they you gotta do they do not search for them.
womble
Tangentially, it's also worth noting that troops designated as Engineers in the activity box bottom left are much, much quicker to use Demo charges for demo work than other troops. That applies even to members of Engineer formations, even specific Engineer squads who don't have that specialism. I've had non-engineers take a minute longer than engineers to do the same job.
