Spotting from AT bunkers

Recommended Posts

Came across my first AT bunker (vehicle pack) and by the look of it the gun blocks pretty much the entire opening. The only way to spot, I guess, is through the gun sights, which would limit spotting a lot. Especially to each side. Anyone with any experience how well/poor they spot?

The 3.11 patch changed the bunkers from looking out the 'corner of their eyes' to more directly forward. So you can get more safetly parallel with the front of the bunkers than in the initial incarnation of the VP.

With patch, I have seen the ATG bunkers fire are very high angles, so that the gun barrel is actually poking through the concrete, beyond the slot width. Will try to post a pic.

rocketman,

In trying to answer the issue you raised, I came across this impressive ATG bunker. Believe it or not, it's a diorama.

I'd think that, given normal land warfare practice, there'd have to be some provision for an offset observer, someone clear of the muzzle blast, to find targets and spot the flight path of the projectile. Else, it'd be a well protected gun which couldn't fight effectively! I'm not saying the ATG bunkers in CM are, for example Regelbau series, but I do think it might be instructive to compare CM ATG bunker layout and size to the real ATG bunkers. Also, it isn't holy writ that a bunker gets the size ATG for which it was designed. A bunker which could handily accommodate a Pak-40 could, if needed, sometimes take a Pak-43. In such a case, it would take up the entire aperture. The footage is dark, but in "The Longest Day," the Germans have a Pak-38 bunker, and the aperture is considerably wider than merely the gun shield. There are people spotting targets and directing the gun crew. General arrangement shot at 2:33. The gun barrel is practically on the embrasure sill, and there's room to both work the gun and have others using the embrasure as well.

The heavily fortified Ouistreham Casino.

Regards,

John Kettler
