db_zero
Anyone here played recently? I have ALB, but haven't played it much. I haven't been in the forums lately and when I first got it I thought the single player campaign game was weak and I really wanted a pause button as I got tired of the clickfest nature of the game. I know there was a debate about putting a pause button and the designers seemed reluctant to do so... Yet in spite of the "lifebars" and other less than gronard features the game subject matter interested me and with the pending Red Dragon release it seems like it be good eye candy cheap porn type of game. I may have to fire it up again. I haven't tried the online play yet, but I may have to try it out.
Wodin
Way to much of a click fest for me. For a Cold War era wargame I'd take Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm any day of the week.
iMolestCats
The online is where the game shines. Just paced fast enough to keep the action going while not being too mucb of a click fest. Also i have access to the Red Dragon beta and its really cool and tons of fun. But alas, nothing like CM in any sort of way. Just something different.
gerzald
I really liked the graphics, and I really wanted to pause the game and zoom in on the town that was getting hit by my rocket barrage and view the devastation, but the game would not let me pause, even in single player. Why do they not let one pause in single player? Because the game is made by the French. And the French are @*# %*#&s. See? Some times there are simple explanations for head scratching mind vexing problems.
Fizou
I casualy play WALB but it cant be compared to CM at all. The first is a fun game, a bit to much of a click fest and I wish there was an option to pause the game but stil fun. The latter is more of a simulation and a work of art
Apocal
Anyone here played recently? I have ALB, but haven't played it much. I haven't been in the forums lately and when I first got it I thought the single player campaign game was weak and I really wanted a pause button as I got tired of the clickfest nature of the game. I play WALB, got the Red Dragon beta as well. I play multiplayer 99% of the time so the lack of pause never bothered me. Its cartoon combined-arms but perfectly fine as far as beer-and-pretzels wargames go. Also: seeing complaints about the game being "a click-fest" are like entering the Twilight Zone for me. I can (easily) manage in a public match with something like seven or eight APM and even serious-face matches have dudes with twenty APM being competitive. Most of the game is macro-focused and as long as a player has a working knowledge of unit types and combined arms relationships between them*, they usually do reasonably well. Not like owning dudes left, right and center, but a lot of publords are really bad and try to do stuff like evict high-quality infantry from cities with nothing but tanks or air assault into the teeth of high RoF AA guns or waste tons of supply on trying to firepower down the enemy's entire defensive scheme instead of singling out an obvious point of failure and then following up to lever them out of their chosen ground. *The cliff-notes version is attacking infantry < defending infantry < tanks/IFVs at medium range < ATGM-teams < attacking infantry but that's really starter advice so it doesn't get into which units are just flat incapable of fulfilling their combined arms role (M48/M60 against decent quality WarPac armor, Dragon ATGMs vs. anything), the role of specialized units or deck construction.
Destraex1
I own it and played my first red dragon BETA game tonight.
Destraex1
I should say that combat mission is far superior. But there are not many cold war games like this out there that look so pretty and have such variety.
gerzald
The funny thing is... for years their costumers have been begging on the forums for a single player pause feature in the single player game. all to no avail. It boggles the mind that a small simple feature that the fans want, and would take a few hours to program, would not be given. Yes, it would make the human player some what more effective, but still... Anyway, such arrogance and disregard for the wishes of the costumers is shocking in this era of company's bending over backward to be all things to all players. I myself am over 50, and my twitch ability is waning, can not do real time any more with out a slow down or pause feature. Therefore No more money in that companies direction.
Michael Emrys
Anyway, such arrogance and disregard for the wishes of the costumers is shocking... Indeed. Valets should be listened to. And dressers as well. Michael
gimburgi
I actually started my interest in military simulation games with Wargame: European Escalation about a year or two ago and that eventually led me to here! I really do adore ALB, but it shouldn't be taken strictly as a military simulator. Yes you can use certain tactics and yes it does have numerous simulator aspects, but it just can't compete with other simulators on the market. I still love the game dearly and play it tons.
db_zero
I never regarded ALB as a serious military simulator. Sounds like the pause feature has still not been implemented. I spend many a night playing Age of Kings against a friend and its was a blast. By the time it was over we De-forrested the entire map so twitch games can be fun. Still some sort of pause for ALB would be nice as its can be mufti-dimensional. I always argued to the "war doesn't have a pause button" crowd on the ALB board that while that may be true, that in ALB you have armored, mech infantry, artillery and AA units and in real life a commander has a staff to help manage all of the separate arms while in ALB you're doing everything... Still it looks good...
gerzald
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well done M. E., skewered by a savage combination of unruly spell check and lighting fast human wit. If this was the royal court of King Luey 5 my Battle Front forum career would be over before it had scarcely started. At least some person is reading my post who has a modicum of comprehension, and an eye for proper spelling. And a dagger of droll at the ready.
