So will the terrain be able to catch fire?

Areas that have been subject to flame attack or large HE will leave small smoldering fires. No large flames and no spreading fire just yet. We will probably see more improvements in this area as the game keeps devoloping and improving.

On this note, do buildings catch fire too? The "scorched earth" tactics adopted by the retreating Russians of burning everything down to the ground, thus leaving nothing useful for the Germans.

Indeed this is a good question. If a building gets attacked by a flamethrower will the building then catch fire and will the units inside take damage from the fire and be forced to flee? Or will the flamethrower just act as short range "superweapon" against entrenched foes but leaves buildings intact to be re-entered?

Was this confirmed or is it an assumption based on the screenshots?

Confirmed. No spreading fires. When you code burning terrain you also have to code a host of AI behaviors relating to burning terrain, then test out those behaviors thoroughly to make sure nothing unexpected got broke. Knowing BFC they'll probably eventually catch up with burning terrain. Remember, we went from no flames at all to flamethrowers so incremental progress is being made. :)

[Edit] I should add the caveat that BFC has been known to spring new features on us without prior warning. So everything I wrote should be prefaced by the phrase "at this preset time,".
