I think women don't really get our need to kill something...rather often. And I suspect that is not necessarily a bad thing. And just for balance, how much of typically "female" behavior (such as the frequent compulsion to re-arrange the furniture) do we men not get?

I accumulate games and big-boy's toys.

    She accumulates...... cushions.......?!?

    Important update!!

As mentioned above, it turns out that modtagging the vehicles [snow] has a rather unfortunate side effect:

The [snow] modtag somehow overrides the [whitewashed] modtag.

This means that these snowy vehicle mods will replace the [whitewash] vehicles in the games with a date of january 1st 1945 or later. Normally, all vehicles would be whitewashed in snowy ground conditions after this date. But since the [snow] modtag overrides [whitewash] this will not happen for these vehicles.

I am not at all happy about this, as I think the whitewashed vehicles in FB look great. Unfortunately this a game code thing I cant do anything about.

There is a workaround that I have used myself, though. But it takes some time. Here's what I've done:

    1) Go to the data directory in your game and copy these four brz files:

    final blitzkrieg v100c.brz
    final blitzkrieg v100e.brz
    final blitzkrieg v100f.brz
    final blitzkrieg v100g.brz

    2) Put each folder separately into your rezexplode input folder and the explode the file

    3) Use a bulk renaming software (I use Bulk Rename Utility) to rename all files modtagged [whitewash]. The new modtag must be [whitewash snow].

    4) Place these files in you mod folder. Or if you - like me - suffer from lack of hard drive space, repack them with rezpack and let the new files replace the original data brz files (if you do this I strongly suggest that you backup the originals to someplace safe).

This can be done in about 15 minutes.

    Cheers

Huzzah! Bring on Umlaut's German vehicles!

Seriously though Umlaut, thanks for chasing this up in the Tech Support area, and I am certainly quite happy to do the above, to get the best of both worlds. But I can certainly understand your frustration.

  3. Very nice Bill.

I definitely agree: short stories covering a finite little 'action' are a lot easier to create and satisfactorily complete  than an ongoing narrative (and it means you can complete it in a finite 'real-time', rather than having a long term story that chew away at your time for weeks (or more!).

Simply not possible until BF makes that kind of information avaialble to the player post battle. I remember seeing the artillery one being mentioned a number of times on the forums but the others not so much.

My little tool relies entering data regarding whatever info is at the players finger tips once an engagement is over.

I think that was the intent of BuffPuff's 'off-topic' comment; it was a request directed at BF, rather than you.

Thanks for the fabulous mods, Umlaut.  I had a thought that if you name your mods starting with your name like "Umlauts whatever" rather than "Snowy whatever by Umlaut" then they all group together in our mod folder under "U" for Umlaut.  (Just makes mod management easier.)

And if Umlaut added this as his signature line, noobie folks like me would be absolutely stunned by his sheer volume of work!  :P Just sayin!

    Umlaut's frackin amazing Mod collection!

Why not? I recall a tv ad from the late-'50s/early-'60s advertising a mens cologne. It showed this dish caressing a guy's head and saying, "There's something about an Aqua Velva man." The implications, while understated were unmistakable. So my idea is for a ten second ad with a delectable and voluptuous babe looking straight into the camera and saying, "Having a man who plays Combat Mission gets me really hot!" and finishing up with a little involuntary wiggle of the hips. Could make a million for you overnight.

    ;)

    Michael

Especially if you theme it WW2 ad style, aka:

    or

The retro period theme can be very effective, e.g. the Fallout ads:

The crew of a FIST/COLT have an FO as team leader, which you will notice if you dismount the crew of a FIST/COLT vehicle.  Because of this they should retain their ability to request support with a diminished time bonus 'even while dismounted.'  There are however two man FIST teams (not just the line FOs) purchasable which can fit in the back of the Knight and B-FIST and be dismounted for observation when exposing the vehicle is too risky.  For obvious reasons the 4 man FIST teams (also purchaseable) do not.

The COLT vehicle (Knight) have the fastest processing times with the B-FIST coming in second.

I could wax poetic for days on end about how this relates to real life but I've got that going on another thread.

Thanks FO, I will have to experiment with this off-line

I really recommend everybody try not to save and reload all the time to maximise success. It can be tempting, but the game is much more tense when you know your every decision matters and you have to live with the consequences.

A good way to remove this crutch is to play a PBEM; no saves to fall back to! You can watch your units' glorious last moments ad-infinitum though! ;)

My "frustration" with Combat Mission ended once I accepted the fact that casualties are going to happen. Before that epiphany hit me I had looked at casualties as a failure on my part to give the right orders to my pixel troops. Inevitably I was setting myself up for failure with that train of thought in that it caused me to be over cautious. Over cautious led to not utilizing reconnaissance correctly which then led to casualties from blundering into a trap and the vicious cycle continued. Once I came to grips with the reality that casualties are going to occur and that a competent commander does what he can to minimize the risks my game play dramatically improved. I still hate losing tanks but I think that's because losing a tank is losing a good chunk of firepower available to you.

LOL, play Black Sea, and you have to very rapidly accept the mindset that vehicles will fireball Pretty Damn Quick, and often with no visuals (or even idea) on the enemy unit (and if you are really unlucky, no idea even of the ordnance involved!!!). Otherwise a/. your head will end up in the monitor or b/. the monitor will end up wrapped around your head..... :o

After that, the plinking and brew-ups in the WW2 titles are quite mild in comparison! :P

  10. @Jammersix I had though about using a FIST this way, but what happens if you want to get your 'eyes' in the grass at the edge of a a treeline? BS is brutal to exposed vehicles, so I've always preferred the 'invisibility' of an FO team hidden in the grass, over a (pretty obvious) FIST vehicle.

Edit: Ahh I see, you are using it solely as a UAV terminal for  indirect FO arty calls only. No direct FO 'eyes-on' calls. Fair enough.

I think I've generally house-ruled out UAV's in all my PBEMs thus far (UKR vs RUS) since UKR has no UAVs..... Must admit, in the second US campaign mission, I think I am using the FIST exactly as you describe.

  11. How on earth did you just " came across this one in the Wikipedia today"??

It's one thing to start watching youtube videos on M1 Garand firing rates, and 3 hours later find yourself watching DIY videos on how to do an oil change on your car....

But you are doing the same on Wikipedia??
