  1. Just finished the third mission with a major victory. When I saw the 2 Tigers and what I had to fight with initially, I thought it would be a ball buster, but I managed to kill both with PIATs so when the cavalry appeared it was basically a mopping up operation. The Germans managed to occupy Grettle, but I had plenty of artillery so I just pummeled it until nothing was left. Had I not been able to kill the 2 Tigers with my infantry it would have been a different story.
  2. Probably a Mobelwagen with quad 20mms. I lost a SU-76 to it and it made a lot of noise on one of my T-34's before I killed it with 2 shots. Deadly against soft targets and SU-76's. Can also damage the optics on tanks. A couple of turns after I destroyed it my air support strafed German targets. Don't know what they hit, but I heard some nice metallic plinking sounds. I had a couple with 37mms in h2h Market Garden battles. They are absolutely deadly when pinking enemy infantry at distance. It didn't take long for my opponents to steer clear of them.
  3. I would say 99 out of 100 times I see grunts tossing grenades at tanks it has no effect. This guy got lucky or its an abstraction for a grenade bundle or at grenade?
  4. Just finished the first battle and got a major victory. Not an easy fight. Many of the Waffen SS unit had to be rooted out by close assault. There was one HMG crew that was surrounded by infantry and I had a Churchill tank with a 95mm that pounded the well built building for 8 turns. Before that the other Churchill tank that was immobilized by a grunt who tossed a potato masher at the treads, pounded the HMG crew with its 75mm and sprayed it with MG for 5 turns. The same grunt who immobilized the Churchill with a grenade used his panzerfaust a couple of turns earlier to collapse an already heavily damaged building that had one of my squad inside it. He fired the panzerfaust, hit the building and down it came on top of my squad causing injuries. I actually restarted the game from a save when one of my tanks hit a mine early on. I doubt I could have won without tanks. From the briefing after the first victory it looks like this is a branching campaign? It does appear that you will see some big tank/combined arms battles against the 12SS and will get rewarded if you preserve your men, but I think that may be difficult as I think things are going to get very bloody.
  5. Interesting...I killed the King Tiger before it could do anything. I rushed it with T-34's. One shot bounced off the front, but another T-34 shot it and hit it on the left front turret and knocked it out. I would guess we're talking under 100 meters. Just got lucky I guess. I imagine the King Tiger is worth buku points if you kill it. I just started using Fraps again and downloaded Microsoft Movie Maker and saved it to video. The Panther that was its wingman got destroyed by a side shot.. A pair of Tigers I also showed up. One killed 2 T-34's but was taken out by a frontal shot by a T-34 at spitting distance. The other one has been hit, a 85's hit the gun manlet and forced the Tiger to pop smoke and retreat. Its also been hit on the side by shells, but he's still lurking. Still not over though. Opponent is very good and uses tanks well. Still has Panthers, assault guns and AT guns, not to mention a lurking Tiger (hopefully the optics are damaged) and infantry with panzerfausts and shreiks.
  6. I started the Scottish Corridor Campaign and I like it. Not easy, but doable. You need to recon carefully and use what you got to take out German positions. Smoke is your friend... Historically the Commonwealth faced the bulk of the German armor in the Normandy Campaign. Don't know if that's reflected in later battles. Someone probably has made a Campaign that covers the tank battles of the one in the game doesn't.
  7. Playing this h2h. I'm Ivan. Basically started out as a sniping duel with tanks that didn't go well for me. Not surprised. In just about all my h2h games as Ivan I find it unproductive to get into a long range shooting duel with Fritz. Like the quote from the movie We Were Soldiers I found that as Ivan you want to get in close to Fritz, grab him by the belt and don't let go. I discovered at close range King Tigers, Tigers and Panthers are quite vulnerable to T-34, even from the front. Yes some shells bounced off the thick hide of the Tigers-even at 80-150 meters, but others got through. The SU-76s is another story, but their smoke ability is nice. Can't say how the game will go as there are still German cats out there.
  8. Just got through watching Generation War. Pretty good, but i don't quite get the comparisons to Band of Brothers. Felt more like Europa Europa than BoB.
  9. I cut the cable TV cord and using Netflix so I don't have to sit through commercials. When I queue it up it says 37 minutes per episode if im not mistaken so I imagine you had to deal with quite a bit of commercials. I watched the first 2 seasons of Justified, but its not on Netflix. Longmire is pretty good too. I'm not into motorcycles, the biker scene or tattoos, but I gotta admit SOA is pretty entertaining.
  10. Thanks...I saw this available on Netflix a few days ago but passed. Now after seeing the preview I added it to my list. I'll watch it alongside Son of Anarchy which I just got into .
  11. How is this and compare to the PC versions of the game? I just got a Dell Venue 8 for $140. I really got it to use with my TV/Roku for searching YouTube by pairing as doing searches from the Roku remote is clunky and pairing with my smartphone is a bit clunking when you search. Even though the Roku3 has a USB port, it doesn't support USB keyboards. I'm finding out that when using wireless the tablet is quite functional alone when you want to view your favorite Combat Mission videos and other stuff. I'm not really a smartphone gameplayer. I'm kinda undecided on the tablet. I did buy Battlefleet 2 which is ok. It seems to me like tablet/smartphone games are not very hardcore. I'm kinda on the fence about CM Touch-especially coming from the PC version world.
  12. Too bad these issues exist. Eagle or whoever now owns the products has a reputation of putting out very high fidelity sims. In spite of all that I went ahead and purchased it as they reduced the price to $19.95. I also went ahead and bought Flaming Cliffs as that was reduced to $39. I already have A-10C. 15-20 years ago I would have spent the time and energy to learning a hard core flight sim. I played Falcon3 to death as well as just about any flight sim that came out. I have Falcon 4 Allied Mission loaded and have LOMAC as well as A-10C, but these days I would rather not have to take a masters degree course to learn how to fly a combat jet so hopefully Flaming Cliffs will be simple enough for me to get into it. I also have IL2 loaded and still have tons of skins for it. Wasn't there a community designed upgrade that improved IL2? I tried it a few years ago, but had issues-mainly with the Japanese Zeros who skins would not draw correctly. Anyway its back to the tutorials...hopefully I can be up and blowing up stuff soon.
  13. This looks promising. I have A-10 and LOMAC and both have pretty high learning curves: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/products/combined_arms/ Has anyone tried it? I may get it. P-51 and the other stuff also looks interesting.
  14. Wargame Air Land Battle is set in the Cold War era. The Campaign game has some issues IMO-no pause and you'll have to deal with lifebars. Red Dragon you can slow things down and the Campaign is dynamic. There are some things to like about the game. Its not hard core by any means.
  15. I have enough h2h games spanning Normandy, Italy and the Eastern Front going on at the moment and I don't have BA installed anymore. I'm also probably going to start playing Civ5 game of the month soon-as if I don't have enough going on.
  16. When I bought it I was mobile and I figured it would run decently on the laptop I had and it did. The comic book style didn't really turn me off-I have a collection of old war comics- Sgt. Rock, Haunted Tank, Wierd War, Sgt Fury and other stuff. I guess like Close Combat and others, BA went by the wayside once CMBN came onto the scene. What I would really like to see is a Combat Mission Sandbox game where you not only have a map/scenario editor, but also the ability to edit everything so you could simulate everything from WW2 to the Present. I'm not holding my breath. This is the bread and butter for the devs and what would they give away everything. I would really like to see stuff like the Arab-Israeli conflict, Cold War and modern Asia.
  17. It all really depends on the context of how you define fanatical. If you go by the above its one thing, but used in a different context it can mean another thing. Non political or ideological soldiers are quite capable of putting up "fanatical" resistance. In the ending stages of the North African Campaign and in Italy German often had the advantage of not only being on the defensive, but in very favorable defensive terrain. They held the high ground and were firing downward at an enemy who had to advance uphill and fire at targets who happened to be at higher elevations. Regardless of what was happening with the overall conduct of the war, the Germans in favorable defensive positions could put up "fanatical" resistance, even if they though the war was lost or uncertain.
  18. Yup...apparently the HD patch allows you to view full screen.
  19. Late comer to the thread... Regarding the fanatical, high motivation discussion. I'm just about through "The Day Of Battle" and got through "An Army at Dawn" and I get the impression that the German could be considered all of the above at this point in the war, but the Allied forces and in particular the American had plenty of artillery and massive amounts of ammo to lob at the Germans and in the end no amount of fanaticism, motivation and experience an stand up to that. I'm not sure if the battles in CM really reflect that. That may be for play balance as it would be massively unbalanced and no fun to be the Axis side getting pummeled by 200-500 rounds per tube. I suppose you could say the same for the Eastern Front, but Russian fire control was not as advanced. From what I've read some of the battles in North Africa and Italy, not only did the Allieds have a huge advantage in artillery, but in some cases they fired till the barrels were red hot and in some cases wore out artillery barrels. The amounts of sells fired per square foot was insane and in a few cases individual German snipers were targeted by multiple artillery pieces up to 8 inch guns. So yeah I could see the Germans being properly labeled as fanatical, elite and what have you, and I could also see how under the weight of allied artillery in the long run it didn't matter.
  20. I'm going to catch hell for this, but I liked Stronghold when it first came out. I'm hoping Stronghold Crusader 2 is decent. looks like there is a Stronghold HD patch for the old series. May have to try it.
  21. Any thoughts on the Battle Academy Series. I have a couple-the first one or 2 that came out. Neither are installed at the moment. I guess that sums it up for me.
  22. Played the death out of it when it first came out and continued to buy up until the Buldge. Have no desire to revisit. It may have improved, but unless I'm mistaken its still the same game engine that is quite dated.
  23. Interesting. I have Steel Fury and T-34 vs Tiger. Neither are installed. Before CMBN and the new engine, I'd probably be interested. Now not so much.
  24. Shock Force got fixed. HOI3 dunno. I haven't played it and from what I've seen the AI is average to below average at best. I kinda do agree with the statement that the engine is not really suited for WW2. Rome Total War 2...hahaha. I removed it. 14 patches and sieges still broken. What a joke. The naval part is nothing to write home about either. Politics is borked -although I can live without that. The sieges is what really ticks me off. Especially given how hyped the game was. There is also no excuse for the game review industry either. They lost all credibility with their scoring and reviews. They panned BF and Shock Force when it first came out and were more than willing to point out the bugs and shortfalls in Shock Force, but RYW2 comes out in its terrible shape and I see 80 ratings? WTF? When sieges get fixed and the C4 like torches get fixed or omitted I may try out RTW2, but I have no desire to do so at this point. Too bad I can't use it to fertilize the plants in my garden.
