  1. Use the save function often. Yes its cheating, but it works. I tried leveling the HQ with Apaches and mortars. Didn't work. Not surprised the mortars didn't level the building like 155's would. You don't get M1s to pound the HQ to rubble so that's not an option and the Strykers with 105's don't have enough rounds to do the job-I also used them to blow a hole in the outer wall to enter the compound. I agree with whats already been suggested, but when the enemy HQ or another unit hides in the very center of the SFHQ it can get deadly. I lost an entire squad in an instant. A JADAM would be nice, but you don't get them so its not an option. I'm playing with the Euroscape mod vs the Russians and they are using RPG30's and I presume other different weapons so I don't know if that makes a difference. I also don't know if the skill and motivation is a factor too.
  2. Hahha...I live in California and the gun laws are crazy, but most were surprised when Brown vetoed a lot of the gun legislation the Socialist legislature recently tied to pass-that included some assault rifle related bills. Browns father who was also governor was a huge gun enthusiast and Brown himself owns a number of guns. He refuses to say what he owns, but rumors are he has an AR15. When he was mayor of Oakland he lived in a commune and West Oakland which is not a good area. Being an avid jogger he would run into unsavory people. I'm pretty sure he was packing. I myself own a Yugo SKS as well as a Saiga. Both fine weapons. I replaced the dust cover on my Saiga with a TWS dogleg cover that has a mounting system. Also added the TWS peep sight. A lot of gun people in the state, but the problem is the liberal urban areas have the population and they can ram stuff down the rest of the state. That's why you see a movement to break away, but that will probably go nowhere.
  3. I spent a lot of time playing War in the Pacific and War in the Pacific AE. Played all of the smaller scenarios h2h as well and 2 h2h Grand Campaigns. Would crank out 1-3 turns a day and 4 to 7 on weekends. Its a great game once you learn it. Most competent Japanese players will not make the same mistakes as Japan did and the wise American player knows not to mess with the Kaito Buto Deathstar early on. Its been a long time since I've delved into it, but I did feel AE when it first came out kinda skewed things to accommodate players who took Japan. The AA on the American ships ran out of ammo too fast and once that happened they were sitting ducks. Things may have been tweaked since then. The end game can be tedious. Its fun to island hop to Japan, but invading the home islands is a real chore. You can always firebomb and A bomb it. I also have War in the East, but really haven't touched it.
  4. I recently bought the game and all the mods on Steam for cheap. I haven't gotten into it yet. Sounds disappointing the AI is pretty weak. As for board games I had a ton of SPI/AH/GDW and other ones back in the day. I wished I never got rid of them as Some of them like Atlantic Wall, War in the Pacific and Campaign for North Africa fetch a nice sum on Ebay. I also can say the same for the magazine Strategy and Tactics. I now buy them on Ebay and collect them. There is a War in the Pacific remake that cost hundreds of dollars. One thing about board games-if we run out of oil, and EMP blast blacks out the world or some other catastrophe cuts off the power, you can still play them :0
  5. Just read the sticky abt assaulting buildings so case closed.
  6. Doesn't seem to work. ICR if that was something of a known issue in SF. From the looks of it I have to issue a Move, Quick or Fast command to enter buildings.
  7. Awesome is an understatement. I loaded it and playing mission 2 of Task Force Thunder. The greener terrain really changes the game and of course you're fighting the Ruskies. Too bad there are no T-80s or the latest Russian stuff though. Coming from CM2 its a big change in SF. You pay quickly for any error in judgement. Everyone is packing assault rifles. On one hand you want to keep your troops in the Strykers or Bradleys as they are immune to bullets, but if you're not careful a RPG or something else can ruin your day. I lost more Strykers that got hit. The placement of the enemy in scenarios is well thought out as they will ambush you and you need to be very careful.
  8. Shock Force was a complete disaster when first released. Now its a very good sim. There are alot of mods for it. I just saw something called Euroscape that replaces the Syrians with the Russians. Has anyone tried it? There is also an Africa and Panama mod.
  9. All the comments about Shock Force made me want to try it out again. I have to say it is a lot of fun to be had single player. The US Marine module is pretty tough IMO as you don't have a lot of M1 Tanks. Javelins are a blast. Gotta be careful with the Strikers. I already lost on that got hit my a couple of RPGs and another one got its 105mm gun disabled. Seems like with the US Army you want to keep the lighter stuff back and let the M1's go forward and blast everything in sight and then use the other stuff to open up on what gets spotted. It will get interesting when I have to clear out urban areas as that could get nasty. The Marines, British and Euros have a different TOE so that makes it interesting. I know the REDFOR will eventually get some MANPADs that could prove troublesome.
  10. Any way to get a Battalion vs Battalion or larger force on force in this? Seems like you don't have enough points. to do this. I set the rarity on none and loose. It also appears that only the attacker can be set to 150% force adjustment. I just got through a nice QB where I pitted 2 Tigers vs 20 Shermans. Now I'd like to try a large force on force Tiger BN vs 2 Soviet Armored BNs.
  11. I like all of them, but wished there was more content in RT. Would have liked to have seen some more battles. They included some Normandy stuff in MG that was nice. Would have been nice to see some Kursk stuff in RT. I have all of the CMSF modules, but haven't played them in awhile. I hear the NATO Campaign is the best. Have they fixed the Panzerfaust issue for the German troops? The graphics are a bit dated in CMSF and its not as polished as CMBN series. The few h2h games I played seemed dull if your the Redforce as you're seriously over matched. Blue on blue seems like it would be better, but that feel weird.
  12. The CBI theater probably wouldn't appeal to enough people to make it worthwhile. With the issues of woods as it already exists and the tactical AI penchant for moving your troops in a column would make jungle fighting a nightmare if you couldn't be more selective about how your troops advanced. The early Japanese "blitzkrieg" campaigns relied heavily on bicycles so that would have to be modeled. Without the 43-45 island hopping stuff, I can't see it having a broad appeal in the US. It would also be pretty boring playing the Japanese in 43-45. Even with the Tiller Campaign series you don't see much if any h2h games due to this. Fortunately the AI is decent when on the defense so most playing the PTO side of things just play the Americans/allieds. Even so after a while it does become a bit repetitive.
  13. I love the PTO. John Tillers Campaign series is probably one of the better tactical games covering the PTO IMO. Its been around a while. Came out by Talonsoft back in the 90's. Not perfect, but it does what it has to do. Has landing craft so you can hit the beach and get shot up if you so desire. Tons of battles and you can play against another person. I have to agree with OPs. You would really need to rework the CM system to accurately portray the type of fighting in the PTO and I don't see that happening. Maybe the Battle Academy series will eventually cover it.
  14. Red Thunder may be the hot ticket these days, but you're missing out if you ignore Market Garden. Been playing h2h and I have to say the British Paras are some tough hombres. I've play as the Paras and against them and they do not break easily-even when the odds are heavily stacked against them and you/they know they are going to lose. I've literally wiped out entire Para forces on the map as the Germans. Not because I wanted to, but because I had to. Being a player with an Asiatic mindset of fighting to the last man in h2h the Paras will rarely let you down. It's actually enjoyable inflicting heavy damage on the Nazi-even if you know you're going to lose. I've had battles where I was out numbered 3-1 and towards the end when I was down to the bottom of the barrel and saying "how many more freaking SS troops does my opponent have", yet my last Paras chopped down the attackers and obediently follow my orders and can pull off a victory or draw. I've had my opponents single Para with a Sten mow down my troops and say WTF that can't be, but then playing as the Paras I've seen a lone Para who was the lone survivor of a section with a sten mow down 5 or 6 Germans and then go out looking for more. You usually won't get that sort of dedication from many of your other pixel troopen as they tend to break far more easily. They are not supermen and can be broken, but they also seem very resilient. The one thing you have to be constantly aware of is ammo for the Stens and less importantly the 303 for the Brens, cause once you're out of nine mm the party's over. Much of the terrain is very well suited for the Paras. If you have a go down with the ship or Alamo mindset some of the unbalanced MG battles are very fun to play as the British-even h2h.
  15. I've seen WW2 in color before and have the DVD set. I just watched the Star Media number 2 on Kiev. I was very impressed. Going to watch the first episodes as well as all the rest.
  16. Thank you-will be worthwhile viewing on a big screen TV and using Roku.
  17. I don't know enough to say, but watching one of the many videos on on youtube it was mentioned that the casualties were cranked up for RT to reflect the nature of fighting on the Eastern Front. Don't know if this has any effect. I based my thoughts above based on my past and current h2h fight in wooded areas: 1. Devils Hills-I was surprised at the effectiveness of my American paratroopers on the attack. This was not only in a very wooded area, but also attacking uphill. I credited this to their experience and motivation levels. Used short bounding overwatch movements. My troops won most of the firefights. 2. Borderland-I found the SS troops handicapped by the lack of automatic weapons. They also face British Paras who are tough troops. 3. Playing Para Bellum now and its American Paras vs German Paras who happen to be one of the few crack para remaining for the Germans. They have ample automatic weapons. Hard to say how that will turn out. The allieds are attacking and have plenty-in fact too much artillery and have been shelling my troops in the woods. Could go either way. Have some RT woods fighting experience, but not enough to say. Regardless of the theater its always been messy in the woods. In all honesty I don't do much slow-crawling so that too may have an effect. I usually use the hunt or quick movement in the woods. I suppose if I crawled more then waited and say still for a while it would change things. Also the hide command. I would think that would be good for setting up an ambush, but I don't think it really works that way-your troops will rarely fire back hen they are hiding.
  18. Could be worse. When Rome Total War 2 came out some bought brand new rigs to run it and claim the title of biggest, baddest computer on the block. They then screamed bloody murder when RTW2 wouldn't run or looked like a slideshow. Many with SLI rigs also had major issues. Meanwhile people like me with good, but not top of the line systems had no issues. I have a 5+ year old system that I'm pleased with. If there is one thing I've learned after all these years is being on the bleeding edge of tech is not always where you want to be. In a few years I may upgrade-and then pay far less for a decent system that today is top of the line. My trustworthy liquid system I'm now using will be like a surplus Sherman tank that is handed down to the Israel. Not sexy, not the latest and greatest, but still very useful and a lot of bang for your buck. I agree OP. Alienware is overpriced. You can do better for far less.
  19. Love at first sight.... Otherwise know as Combat Mission whooped. True love is when you spend over 2 hours setting up the dreaded initial turn making sure every detail is correct.
  20. The experience and motivation of your troops becomes even more important. All else being equal automatic-rapid fire weapons make all the difference-this is why Soviet SMG squads has changed the equation from Italy and Normandy. Smoke is your friend and enemy. I had a h2h game where a lone grunt tossed a hand grenade at at T-34 in a wooded area. Didn't harm the tank, but it beat a hasty retreat. I get the impression tankers don't like forest and wooded areas unless they have plenty of infantry support.
  21. I often find myself going through a first turn ritual that on top of the setup that I wish could be streamlined-dolling out ammo and weapons like zooks and mortars to my squads. I have to move them to a vechicle and in the case of Bren carriers break down a squad to load them. I allocate ammo then move my pixelmen to where I want then. It would be nice if this could be streamlined. A better process would not only streamline things, but may also prevent the situation I face in my current game. I'm the British and there are 4 jeeps loaded with 30 cal and 30 cal M1 ammo...oops.
  22. I wouldn't worry about getting beat. Most h2h players are good people and not like the online community you'll encounter elsewhere. Campaigns and stand alone battles are fun, but you may develop habit that you'll have to unlearn once you start playing h2h.
  23. You're mistaken-its not love. Its a disease. Quit while you still are able to. Soon you will looking at mods, then you will be wondering why can't they do Viet-Nam, the Arab-Israeli and modern Asia. You will then start watching videos on you-tube. You will be lying in bed watching videos on your mobile device. Then you will start h2h and its all over.
  24. Sounds like a RT version of Cats Chasing Dogs is in order.
