system be developed to track and then laser blind small drones that could be mounted on a vehicle, or even small enough that individual AFVs could carry their own?

Adding more stuff to AFVs sounds like @The_Capt's "2.  Anger - We will try to protect the tank, just so we can keep it viable." :D

Like tank and anti-tank weapons, it will become an another arms race, with more capable and resistant drones and more effective countermeasures against them.

No doubt that is happening. a lot of booths at CANSEC this past year were all about drones. There were as many offering drone counters as there were drones.

  2. I received my three turns and played them all - just pw setting so no fun - yet 🙂 I found only one of my three opponents has a Matrix community forum account and I sent them a direct message.

I find their setup a bit odd. Why is the tournament account not tied to the community account? I would have hoped / assumed that if you signed up for the forum you would be ready to go for a tournament. In fact I think you are. But on the other hand I would also have expected that if you signed up for a tournament that created account would also be setup for the forum. That way at least people could DM their opponents easily.

    Sigh maybe some day ?

I've never used the PBEM system before and I can't seem to start the first turn.

    • I see '[Grand Tournament] CMCW Round 1 (Turn 0)'
    • I click Continue
    • I see New Password (looks like I'm playing the Soviets)
    • Per instructions I leave the field blank and click ok
    • I see the Save Email Game box, File Name: Valley of Ashes 002
    • I click Ok

All of that looks fine and just what I did this morning for all three games. Just like a regular PBEM game the first turn is setting the pw and that is all you do. In this case leaving it blank makes it feel like you did nothing at all 🙂 But what you did do was create a file ready for your opponent to play. The PBEM++ system will have sent that file to the server for delivery to your opponent. They get to do their setup and send the turn back to you.

    • I'm back at the main menu and logged out of my Slitherine account

This I don't understand. You should return to the main menu of the game once the save dialog box goes away. However I don't know what "logged out of my Slitherine account" means. Can you clarify?

I wonder if the upcoming performance test for the Abrams we have sent to Ukraine might make a dent in the denial

Why would an Abrams fair any better than a challenger or a leopard 2? I know they are a good tank but they have all the same limitations and are just as vulnerable as any other tank.

    - I understand that the aircraft will attack anything they can see in their target area. Only what they can see (no area fire)? Strictly in their target area (no fire outside)?

Correct it picks its own targets inside the area specified by the FO. I have seen them go just outside the area in the past.

    - The forward observer needs to have a LOS to the target area for calling aircraft support, like for artillery. But what thereafter? Does it help if the FO has a LOS to units inside the area?

No, once the call has been made your FO does not make any difference that I have seen.

    - I see in some AAR that people redirect their aircraft to alternate target areas. Therewas no possibility to "adjust fire" like one does for artillery. Did I miss something? How can you change the aircraft target?

Those people either made a second call after the CAS finished the mission or they cancelled the mission and made a new call.

    - It is not clear for how long an aircraft remains available for support. In my case it stayed for about 10 minutes, then disappeard but seemed to be available for another call with a 10 minutes delay... Can you call the same aircraft several times in the same mission, as long as it has got ammos?

I'm not sure what the time limit is either. Once they are out of ammo they leave for good. I usually assume they are going to run out of ammo on the mission I called so if I really really want a subsequent call I'll cancel the first one while they still have ammo. Just to be sure.

    - My Typhoon had bombs and 20 m cannons. I had the choice bewteen light, medium and heavy missions. Unsure of what this meant, I asked for medium... Should I have done otherwise?

It's more guidance light means favour strafing and heavy means favour bombs. I have not really tried experimenting with how strong the effect is. For example I don't know if Light would prevent a plane armed like yours from dropping bombs at all. Hopefully someone else can chime in on that topic.

If you read Steam's notes about it, they say users will no longer be able to play if they're on Win7.

Surprised me, but I'm on Win11 so don't give much of a flying f**k.

Yeah, this kind of thing can be annoying. I had Vista and was staying away from Windows 8. A photo cataloguing program I use came along and said they were dropping support for Vista. I wasn't too worried since I had been using their Beta and it worked fine. Release came and they f***ing added code to refuse to run on Vista. I was very annoyed. Dropping support is one thing but actively preventing the software from running that's really frustrating.

I will not be happy in a renters society, especially in regards to my books, music, software, and lastly games. If you have a club for those who care, I'll join!

Agreed. Perhaps a club is what we need. When Adobe switched to rent only and many complained, including myself, Adobe ignored us and other users bitched at us even though all we wanted was to be able to own. We never said they could not rent if they wanted to. It keeps happening over and over. Sigh.

    That is all unexplored space.

Not really. Steam has their terms of service that we all signed up to and they can revoke your ability to play the games you lease whenever they need to change what OSes they support. It's very well established space. Extremely frustrating but it is a done deal now.

The first thing I would try to do is re-buy the game on GoG.

This is what we all have to do - buy from other sources that have better terms. Sadly this is like a handful of us screaming against a hurricane for all the good it does us. There are just too few people who care about this issue.

  9. I don't think we will ever get that ability in the general game. I could be wrong of course since I don't speak for CM. I have no idea if Steve will drop in and comment. His previous stated stance - from my memory so forgive any mistakes I might make - is that he has no desire to do that for two reasons:

    - the game is a historically accurate simulation so allowing people to uber their favour tank for nerf the "bad" guys' rifles etc is not a good idea

    - the multi player community would be come fractured and or be exposed to cheating because only people with the same capability mods could play against each other and the development effort required to ensure that works without cheating is huge

I, personally, agree with this 100%

  10. There are a couple of things to note. First when you are shooting at an enemy tank you don't get perfect information about its condition. You only know it's knocked out when  your soldiers know it's knocked out. I know I've relayed this story before (plus the original post which I was not able to find). I had a Sherman put 7 rounds into a PzIV at close range before knocking it out. I thought it must be a bug. Turns out since this was in the woods the visibility was challenging and my tank crew just did not know they KO'ed it with the first or second shot (I cannot remember which) so they kept firing.

Then there is the issue of armour vs ammo. The ability to actually cause system damage, crew casualties and knock out a tank depends on the energy left in the shell after it has penetrated the armour. At the right distance any gun can just barely penetrate a particular tank's armour. So, its not some uber property of a Panther vs some terrible property of a Sherman. Its how the engagement falls with in the damage capabilities vs armour. What you are seeing is the long 75 on the Panther has serious energy left after penetrating allied tanks out longer than the guns of the allied tanks have against it.

  11. You have to activate (via license key) the various modules and packs. The installer brings in everything even stuff you haven't bought yet. They greyed out stuff is things that the game thinks you have not purchased yet. To activate everything you purchased you need to enter the keys you received. There is a link that was installed called something like "Activate keys". I'm not in front of my gaming computer but it should be find-able. Run it as many times as you have keys to enter and it will get you sorted.
